SECOND HAND SMOKE

Second hand smoke is the smoke released by lit cigarettes and exhaled by smokers. This smoke contains harmful products such as formaldehyde, acetone and other cancer causing chemicals.

Effects of second hand smoke

Non-smokers are exposed to the harmful cancer causing chemical released by cigarettes. Non-smokers who are in close proximity of smokers develop lung diseases. E.g. asthma, bronchitis and respiratory infections. Non-smokers who live with smokers have an increased chance of developing heart diseases. Second hand smoke also increases the risk of brain tumors in children. Allegedly leads to breast cancer in women. Children exposed to second hand smoke have lower immunity than children who arent and are more likely to need breathing tubes in the hospital. Can cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in young children.

Effects of secondhand smoke on pregnancy

Women have a higher chance of having low weight babies. Increases the rate of stillbirths and birth defects. Babies are more likely to die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Lungs take longer to develop. Have a greater risk of pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis and more. Babies have a higher rick of heart diseases.

EXPOSURE TO CIGARETTE SMOKE

How are we exposed to cigarette smoke?
We are exposed to cigarette smoke by: Being around someone smokes out in public. Living with a person who smokes.

How can we decrease exposure?

We can decrease exposure of cigarette smoke by: Staying upwind of smokers. Restricting places where smoking is allowed. Educate people to the risks of smoking. Encouraging smokers to quit. Avoid hanging around smokers when possible.

WHAT IS OUR GOVERNMENTS POLICY ON SMOKING?

The government of Trinidad and Tobago as established an act known as the Tobacco Control Act. The tobacco control act is as follows: An act to prevent tobacco use by children; regulate tobacco use by individuals; enhance public awareness of the hazards of tobacco use and ensure that individuals are provided with information to make more fully informed decisions about using tobacco; protect individuals from exposure to tobacco smoke; prohibit and restrict promotional practices; prevent smuggling of tobacco; provide for regulation of tobacco products to mitigate against the harmful effects of tobacco; and provide for other related matters.

SHOULD CIGARETTE SMOKING BE BANNED?

I think cigarette smoking should be banned because when smokers smoke the not only affect themselves but others around them as well. Additionally, when these people smoke inconsiderately the lives of the ones closest to them are endangered by the harmful effect of second hand smoke. The smokers themselves are damaging their bodies and putting their health at risk when they smoke. This is why I think smoking should be banned.
