Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page. Leave about one inch margin space on all four sides of the answersheet. Mobile phones and computers of any kind should not be used inside the examination hall.

Q.1 (a). (i) (ii) Q.1 (b).

Let A and B be the events such that P ( A) = 0.30 and P(B ) = 0.40 . Find

P( A B ) if
A and B are mutually exclusive events A and B are independent events. A number is chosen from the numbers1,2,3,.. 50 at random. Find the probability that chosen number is divisible by either 2 or by 5. [4 + 3 = 7]

Q.2

Urn 1 contains 4 white 2 black balls and Urn 2 contains 2 white 2 black balls. One ball is transferred from Urn 1 to Urn 2 then one ball is drawn from Urn 2. (a) Find the probability that a white ball is drawn from Urn 2. (b) If the ball drawn from Urn 2 is white, find the probability that the ball transferred from Urn 1 to Urn 2 was white. [4 + 3 = 7]

Q.3

A factory is producing 1% defective items. 400 items are chosen from a large lot of items produced by this factory. (a) Find mean number of defective items among 400 items. (b) Use Poisson approximation to the Binomial distribution to find the probability that number of defective items found among these 400 items is more than 3. [2 + 4 = 6]

Q.4 (a).

In a photographic process, the developing time of prints is a random variable having the normal distribution with mean 16 seconds and standard deviation 2 seconds. Find the probability that it will take from 14 seconds to 18 seconds to develop a print. The number of calls received at a telephone booth are according to Poisson process averaging 2 calls per minute. Find the probability that the time between successive calls arriving at the booth is more then one minute. [4 + 4 = 8]

Q.5

The joint probability density of two dimensional random variable (X,Y) is given by

f ( x, y ) = x + y, 0 < x < 1, 0 < y < 1

= 0 elsewhere find (a) (b) (c) Q.6 (a).

1 1 P X > , Y < 2 2
Marginal pdf of X. Conditional pdf of Y when X = x. [3 + 3 + 2 = 8]

The time X at a counter for a customer to be served at a post office is a random variable with mean 80 seconds and variance 225 seconds. Let X be the meantime of 100 customers. Find the probability that X lies between 77 and 83 seconds If independent random samples of size n1 = 9, n2 = 16 are taken from normal
2 populations having the same variance. Find P S12 4 S 2

Q.6 (b).

[4 + 4 = 8]

Q.7 (a).

A random sample of size 100 is taken from a population with = 10. If the sample mean x = 50 . Find 95% confidence interval for the population mean . Suppose for a population with standard deviation = 8, we want to test

Q.7 (b).

H 0 : = 40 against H 1 : = 36 on the basis of a random sample of size 100. H0 is

rejected if X < 38. Find probabilities of type I error and type II error. Q.8 (a). [4 + 4 = 8]

What is the size of the smallest sample required to estimate an unknown proportion p with atleast 95% confidence if the maximum error is 0.07. The following data pertain to the number of computer jobs per day and the central processing unit (CPU) time required. Number of jobs X CPU time Y 1 2 2 4 3 5 4 9 5 10 [4 + 4 = 8]

Q.8 (b).
