Thriller night... Students stand in line in front of the Haunted House, waiting to experience the Hall of Horrors. Ashley Chen SCARE: Admission for the Fall Fun Festival was $5 for children under eight years of age and free for adults, while admission for the Hall of Horrors was $5 for all attendees. Justin Kong Feature Theme Editor The City of Diamond Bar hosted its annual Hall of Horrors on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and its annual Fall Fun Festival on Saturday, October 31 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Park. The purpose of the Hall of Horrors is to provide high school kids from Diamond Bar High School and Diamond Ranch High School with a good, fun volunteer activity, while providing a good scare for children eight and older, said Andee Tarazon, the special events coordinator of the City of Diamond Bar. The Hall of Horrors included many scare zones that featured a graveyard scene and a cornfield walkway. Student volunteers hid in walls and corners to scare attendees in the Halloweenthemed maze. A section of the maze was decorated with neon-colored paint and volunteers provided attendees with special glasses for a three-dimensional experience of the maze. [The Hall of Horrors was] very interesting, especially when you hear high-pitched screams in your face, commented senior Brandon Chan. Admission for the Hall of Horrors was $5 per person. However, students were given a chance to print a free ticket for the Hall of Horrors on the City of Diamond Bar website to attend the event on October 30. The Fall Fun Festival included games for children to win small toy prizes and candy. The event also featured areas [Please see SCREAM on page 2]
The Diamond Bar High Schools Thundering Herd Marching band performed at the 2009 Loara Band Review in the streets of Anaheim on Saturday, October 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The band placed fifth out of 38 competitors. Only the top 100 Diamond Bar High band members, based on previous performances, performed in the parade. These students competed against bands from Arcadia High School, Chino Hills High School, El Dorado High School, Kennedy High School, and Riverside King High School. The kids worked very hard for the weeks coming into [the competition]. They did very well and I anticipate better things to come, commented Band Director Steve Acciani. Senior drum major member Henry Liu stated, Our band performed to the best that we could have practiced for even if our [placement was] not as high as we expected. [The competition] was definitely a growing experience and
definitely something we can use to improve. The band performed the song, Boys of the Old Brigade, a traditional military song. The competition focused on how well the participating bands could imitate a marine band. Each band was judged on a point system with 100 points distributed among three categories. These categories consisted of music performance, showmanship, and appearance. I enjoyed the time because I got to bond with my section and I got to learn about this particular competition, said Lea Pandy, a junior band member. Band members have been preparing for the parade since the start of summer with practices from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. five days a week. They have also practiced four times a week since the school year began. Even though there was a lot of pressure and a lot of time was taken up [for practice], it was all worth it because we did our best and placed well, stated sophomore band member Christine Kim. Diamond Bar achieved a new level of excellence. We did well in some parts of the competition. The students gained a lot of knowledge, said senior drumline member Awais Spall.

THE BULLS EYE
Teachers took roll of their classes on rosters to make sure that all their students were present. The teachers then handed it to their designated areas Grade Level Coordinators, who then handed the rosters to Real, the coordinator of the drill. The entire drill took about 20 minutes to complete. After the drill, a bell sounded and students were led back to their classrooms. I think [the drill] went really smoothly. Everyone was cooperative. Everybody came down to the field and up to the front in an orderly fashion, commented Real. The disaster drill was originally planned to occur on the day of the Great California ShakeOut, an annual earthquake drill in which all schools in California would participate in on Thursday, October 15. However, it was postponed at DBHS because there was rain two days prior to the planned date. Since most people were evacuating to the field, we figured that it was going to be very muddy, slippery, and messy down there. We asked teachers to review their route with their students in lieu of the drill on that day, stated Real. She added, I felt like postponing [the drill] was a good idea, as long as the teachers took time to review the route with their students. As the Interim Assistant Principal, Real organized the drill with the help of DBHS Operations Manager, Eric Gossett. I have a couple of things I would like to change for next time; maybe tweak a couple of evacuation routes for some classes because we had some areas that were kind of bottle-necked. But other than that, [the drill] went very well, commented Real. There will be another evacuation drill in the spring to review what students and staff are expected to do in an actual evacuation. Instead of just an evacuation drill, we are going to try and do some simulations for [everyone] to be more involved, said Real, in regards to the upcoming spring evacuation drill.

Turkey Runs A Foul
Ruby Hwang Staff Writer Turkish television producers have recently sparked controversy with a series called Separation: Palestine in Love and War, which egregiously displays Israeli soldiers in a bad light. The show inappropriately depicts a group of Israeli soldiers shooting down children during a battle with Palestinian forces. With the current issues between Israel and the Middle East, such tension must be avoided. Not only does the show promote malice towards Israel, but it also jeopardizes the peaceful relationship between Israel and Turkey. The secular Muslim state of Turkey and the Jewish state of Israel have maintained a peaceful relationship for years, and with the instability in the Middle East at the moment, it would be unwise for Turkey to risk losing such a vital connection to the ultimate goal of peace. It is one matter to have legitimate conicts with another country; it is an entirely different issue when the conict can easily be resolved, except for one sides stubborn refusal to analyze the long term consequences of its actions. Israeli soldiers fought a bloody battle in the Gaza Strip earlier this year, still making it a sensitive topic. While Israels occupation was indeed controversial, including such material in the show is in extremely poor taste. A producer of the show stated that the soldiers were not meant to represent Israelis and that the uniforms were only similar in appearance, but there is no doubt that the depicted villains are in fact Israeli soldiers. Not only does the drama purposely single out Israeli soldiers as criminals, but it can even be said that some of the people in charge of the show are exploiting anti-Semitism to make a prot and increase ratings. Jewish Israel receives much hate from its neighboring countries and the portrayal of Israelis in such a negative way will likely make the show a notable prot from its anti-Semitic viewers. The Turkish Foreign Minister has rightly stated that the shows broadcasters ultimately have control over whether or not the show will stay on the air; otherwise, the situation would evolve into a matter of censorship. It is now the responsibility of the producers to bring a peaceful end to this unneeded dispute by either changing the script or cancelling the show altogether. It is understandable for Turkish ofcials to be on edge about the countries relationship, but in any case, Turkey should still work to maintain a stable connection with Israel. The producers are almost single-handedly souring an otherwise amicable relation. The matter of the television show itself has little signicance, but on top of the already unsteady political climate in the Middle East, it is part of the crucial issue of strengthening or weakening ties. Turkey is one of the few countries that have peaceful relations with Israel and to end that rapport could be fatal to both countries, and to any prospects of long-term peace in the Middle East. This issue is just one among a series of disputes between the countries of Israel and Turkey. Turkey has also excluded Israel from important North Atlantic Treaty Organization air training exercises this October, putting further strain on the two countries relationship. The producers refusal to fix the issue is irresponsible and ignorant. The presentation of the Israeli soldiers in such a manner is also harsh and very unnecessary. It would be best for the producers to resolve the problem peacefully while maintaining the close association with Israel. Turkey is simply not doing enough to keep its relationship with Israel strong in such uncertain times.

Pro: UC Revenue Plan
Kevin Acciani Asst. Sports Editor The economy is currently in a dreadful state, and the State of California is no exception; one of the areas that is being hit the hardest is public universities. Because of the money problems the state is dealing with, colleges are not able to generate the same amount of money they need to meet their rising expenses. Colleges are taking innovative measures to try and fix their budget problems. For example, Cal State Universities are requiring that all teachers take ten day-long furloughs. What the University of California is deciding to do, however, is much more hotly debated. They are considering raising admission costs for those undergraduates who plan to major in engineering and business up to $900 more than the extra $2500 all students will have to pay. While opponents of this plan may say it is unfair to only raise costs for certain majors, this is a solid plan that will temporarily alleviate the hardships that the UC system is going through. There is a good reason for choosing those two specific majors to have an increase in fees. UC ofcials state that the two were chosen due to the high salaries of the required faculty members in those elds. The two undergraduate programs disproportionately cost the universities more, and it is only right that those specic students pay more too. Also, students who have graduated from the business and engineering programs tend to obtain higher-paying jobs soon after graduation; they will be more than able to pay for the small hike in the long run. UCs are not the only ones trying to selectively increase tuition on the basis of major. According to a study by the University of Wisconsin administration, about half of all major universities across the United States charge more for at least one undergraduate major. The policy has worked for other universities; it will undoubtedly work for the UCs too. Those who wish to maintain uniform tuitions are hanging on to an obsolete fee system which has proved ineffecient. So many schools are adopting the progressive policy because it is a solid, proven idea that works to appropriately cope with rising costs. Opponents of the plan say that engineering and business majors should not have to pay more than other students because it will then cause a decline in the number of students learning about the two subjects. While they are correct that the quantity of those students will be lowered, only those students fervently dedicated to the disciplines will continue to study. The professionals will be more successful in their chosen career, ensuring a dedicated and productive workforce in future years. Without good quality businessmen and engineers, the economy has little chance of improving. Unless something is done soon, the UC system will face an even more problematic budget crisis than the one it is going through currently. The only logical solution is to raise fees; but it is unfair to charge all students when only a select group of undergraduates are costing the university the most.
young and aspiring engineering and business students. In addition, engineering and business programs are not the only costly elds of study; other majors in the science field, such as chemistry and biology, require expensive lab equipment and pricey lab buildings in universities that also take their toll on the UC budget. By inequitably charging business and engineering majors more than other students, the UCs are not only discouraging higher productivity in the economy, but also making irrational and discriminatory decisions. There are alternatives in mitigating the education costs that do not interfere with undergraduates and their occupational decisions. The UCs should instead charge students that have stayed at the college longer than four years, extend faculty furloughs, and accept fewer students. Reprimanding undergraduates for their choice in occupation is erroneous and bound to weaken the economy in the long run as students begin to lean towards professions that are more affordable.

public, the race slowly came to a deadlock. To nally dominate the DSi Lite in the sales chart, Sony released the PSP Go on October 1, 2009, and hopes to beat out its rival once and for all. The PSPs colossal size, which was argued to be a major disadvantage to both the DS and the DSi Lite, is now an advantage. While Sony has reduced the size of the device, the size of the screen on the PSP Go has not been reduced. In fact, the PSP Gos screen is slightly bigger than that of its predecessor, the original PSP, which allows gamers to take in

To the older generation that experienced the youthful atmosphere of the 1970s, the name Randy Newman brings to mind classic songs such as I Love L.A. and Small People that played with both satire and melody. Even to todays young generation, Newmans unmistakable voice is well-known in the entertainment industry, especially with Newmans success in movies, particularly Disney-Pixar movies such as Toy Story, for which he wrote the popular song, Youve Got a Friend in Me. Yet despite his growing age, Newman, who is currently 66 years old, continues to remain publicly active with music, having just released his newest album, Harps and
Angels. Although Newman is now praised for his musical talent, his musical career started off slowly. Eventually, Newman was praised for his characteristic satirizing of political and social issues in his songs. However, Newmans numerous albums never sold exceptionally well. So Newman tried his hand at music in movies. Over his career in composing musical pieces for movies, Newman has received 17 Oscar nominations, five Grammy Awards, and 13 Grammy nominations for various original works. He also received an Academy Award in 2001 for his If I Didnt Have You in the movie Monsters, Inc. Most recently, he won a Grammy Award for Our Town from the movie Cars. As far as movies are concerned, Newman obviously

Newman continued his work with Disney-Pixar and wrote memorable songs for the movies A Bugs Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc. , and Cars . Currently, he is working on the musical composition for the upcoming Toy Story 3. In his newest album, Harps and Angels, Newman returns to his old habits of incorporating satirical commentary on current issues and also plays with a mixture of blues, jazz, and pop. Newman also features a full orchestra in several songs in this album. It comes as no surprise that this album has received impressive reviews for its humor and excellent composition. Although Newman is growing old he has no intention of ending his musical career in the near future, which means there will be plenty of heartwarming, lovable songs to come.
their favorite games on a giant 3.18 inch screen. This is made possible by the slide screen upgrade from the PSP. Unlike the PSP, the PSP Go has a screen that slides up and down, which is both useful and visually appealing. It has reduced the size by a substantial 43 percent. What is even more appealing is the ability to use the worldwide PlayStation network, where PSP Go users can download over 225 full game titles, TV shows, movies, and more. Instead of carrying around the cartridges of DS games, which are easily lost, gamers can download and play their favorite games instantaneously. Additionally, the one big advantage of the PSP Go to the DSi Lite, is the crisp, clean graphics, which have also been upgraded from the PSP. The realistic graphics allow PSP Go gamers to experience gaming at its best, compared to the lower quality graphics of the DSi Lite. So what do you think? Do you think the PSP Go has enough fuel to beat the Nintendo DSi Lite? With the many improvements, the PSP Go has a clear shot of taking down its enemy once and for all.

Lady Brahmas Stampede Cowboys
Rachel Halpert Asst. Sports Editor The girls varsity volleyball team beat the Chino High School Cowboys on Thursday, October 29 at Chino High. The win brought their league record to 3-5 and their overall record to 14-12. The Lady Brahmas overpowered the Cowboys in three straight games to capture a victory. The winning scores for the match were 25-9, 25-19, and 25-21. Most importantly, they were able to capitalize on the Cowboys constant errors. The Brahmas began the match with a lot of condence, still energized from the exciting win against Ayala on Tuesday, October 27. The energy and optimism from that game carried over to Thursdays match, as they started off with a fast 25-9 win in the rst game. Everyone on the team was playing at her best. Dang Yankees
Ryan DeVore Sports Editor For all sports fans, it is a natural phenomenon that few can explainan innocent transformation of hatred into an unwavering passion. The distaste for an opposing teams performance has been transformed into an art, and though such hate tends to be very emotional, it is often based on a sound basis. Many concrete reasons can be found to reasonably justify such opposition. A prime example of this can be found with the New York Yankees, who are one of the most disliked franchises in all of sports. The distaste of their universally known emblem is undoubtedly deserved for a multitude of reasons. The rst thing that pops into a fans mind when he or she sees the New York logo is money. It seems as if half of the breaking news on Sports Center covers the possibility of a trade involving the Yankees. With a reputation for paying tremendous sums of money for many of their players, money does not seem to be an issue for this team. It was only last year that the Los Angeles Angels offered over $100 million for the bigbat of Mark Teixeira, only to be beat by a few more million dollars offered by the greedy men in the Bronx. Shortly thereafter, the Yankees were able to acquire the left-handed ace C.C. Sabathia by simply offering more money than any other team. From their excessive spending, it would be pretty difcult for the Yankees not to make it to the playoffs every year. So to everyones dismay, we get to see the Bronx Bombers almost every October in the postseason. This is the prime time for the hatred of the Yankees, as baseball fans see the hundreds of millions of dollars at work. The Yankees have, in this way, strengthened their chances against any team they face. It seems as though every team is struggling from budget constraints during these tough economic times except, of course, the Yankees. While the Yankees pave their way for success each and every year, the one aspect that annoys most people is the excessive commercialization that surrounds the team. The advertising world, along with the media, is transxed by each players model-like appearance. No one seems to notice that once a player leaves the team, such as Jason Giambi, that players advertisements and precious television commercials cease to exist. That NY logo is enough to turn the media upside down in excitement, as players constantly steal the spotlight in magazines and commercials. At the end of the day, the New York Yankees have the highest salary rate compared to any other team. With a wallet lled with nothing but blank checks, the team has made it once again to the World Series this year. While some express sympathy and understanding for the motives of one of the most successful franchises, many people across the nation, however, will agree that the Yankees deserve to be hated as they continue to steal the spotlight in the media and buy their way into the postseason.

Kevin Acciani Asst. Sports Editor The face of a football team is usually a quarterback or a running back. For example, the most well-known player on the New England Patriots is Tom Brady. But where would Brady be if he did not have a good offensive line to protect him? Nowhere. Despite the common belief that quarterbacks and running backs are the heroes, the offensive line is more important to a football team than anything else because with even one weak spot on the line, a defender can rush through and stop the play. Yet, it seems that not enough people give lineman the credit they deserve. Every non-lineman should thank the big hogs up front for everything they do. They are possibly the hardest working players on the eld, often spending extra time after practice to make sure they are game-ready. Despite their diligent preparation, it appears as if the only time they are ever noticed is when they mess up. Dwight Freeney, the star defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts, gets paid millions of dollars a year to get a couple sacks a game, at most. Although not many people
will realize it, even a mediocre offensive lineman will beat Freeney on nearly every play of the game. However, if Freeney gets a single sack, people will unfairly criticize the offensive player. In 2007, the Patriots nearly nish undefeated. The reason they were able to be so successful is that Brady was able to play to the best of his ability because of his rock-solid line giving him so much time in the pocket, allowing him to be able to nd his receivers as soon as they got open. Linemen do not only help in the passing game, but are furthermore the key to a good rushing attack. Without a good surge from the line, not even the most talented running back can go anywhere. At least those who truly understand football agree how important offensive linemen are to a teams success. The secondhighest paid position in the National Football league is left tackle, behind only quarterback, and the other line spots are not far behind. Linemen deserve to be paid at least as much as other skilled positions; the line is what makes a whole offense work. Most football analysts agree that the game is won on the line.
[The team] had a rough start, but we became more focused and relaxed.
