Samar police omni-presence reaches remote barangays
CATBALOGAN CITY Samar police pushes for the PNPs omni-presence or the availability of the PNP in each barangay. Samar Police Provincial Director Eusebio Mejos reported to the local media that in Calbayog City, the police are required to visit seven barangays a day. This is to identify the problems in the barangay and address peace and order concerns. To augment their presence in the barangays, the PNP Samar started deploying personnel to Sta. Margarita, Matuguinao and Calbayog City. They are also getting security support from the Philippine Army. He also asked the religious sector, media, and the people of Samar to work mistaken identity. Quimbo said they found out in their succeeding investigations that the victim has also been receiving death threats. The police reportedly recovered the victims cell phone where they discovered some threatening text messages from an unidentified sender dated March 1, 2013. The message said something like nano nga ginuulang mo an pagpasweldo sa mga tawo? An akon bata masakit Angay sa imo pumahuway na. (why are you delaying the salaries of the people? My child is sick you deserve to rest.) Quimbo recalled. We are focusing our investigations on this angle now. The police believe that Portajadas assassins were hired killers. (RACHEL AR-

CATARMAN, Northern Samar A municipal treasurer from this province who has been receiving death threats was ambushed Saturday afternoon by still unidentified men believed to be hired assassins. The victim, Pedro Portajada Jr., 54, was reportedly driving aboard his Honda XR motorcycle to go home when three motorcycle riding men sprayed him with bullets around 3 pm of March 23 along the highway in Barangay Libertad Gamay Northern Samar. The victim was hit in dierent parts of his body and died on the spot, police reports said. The killers allegedly took the victims wallet and belt bag. The investigators found 2 empty shells and 1 slug of caliber 45 pistol from the crime scene. Motives Portajada is a resident of Rosario town at the first district here and was

assigned at the second district as municipal treasurer of Gamay since 2001. According to Vice Mayor Movible Martinico, acting mayor of Gamay, Portajada had no enemies in their place and he could not think of anyone who would want to kill their municipal treasurer. The vice mayor suspects that Portajada was a victim of highway robbery. Posible hold up an tuyo sa kanya kay tikang pala siya sa meeting san coop ngan mayaun siya nakarawat nga dividend siton nga adlaw. (It is possible that the motive was hold up as he just came from a meeting of their cooperative and he received some amount as dividend that day), Martinico told LSDE when reached through his mobile phone. Based on police reports, the victim indeed came from the meeting of the Gamay Municipal Employees Multipurpose Coop-

erative (GMEMPC) before he was ambushed. In their initial investigations, the police considered the angle of mistaken identity as another probable motive in the killing. The killers could have mistaken the victim with the towns chief of police, Senior Inspector Julie Quimbo, as the two ocials use similar motorcycles and helmets. We both drive red Honda XR motorcycles, and I also have a black helmet like the one that the victim used., Senior Inspector Quimbo said in mobile interview with LSDE. The chief of police added that a day before the incident, he received an anonymous phone call warning him that some people wanted to kill him. Thats why initially we thought that it was mistaken identity, he said. However, in their follow up report, the Gamay police ruled out both the motives of robbery and

Prioritized for national assessment are areas with existing travel and tours; tour guides; transport services; and facilities for meetings, incentives, conferencing, and exhibitions. on Elections), the PNP (Philippine National Police) and the Philippine Army to have an clean, honest, accurate and peaceful elections, Varquez said after the signing of the covenant held inside the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady last Sunday. The bishop of the diocese of Borongan said that the Church has no other call relative to the conduct of the balloting this May 13,2013 but to make it orderly and peaceful. And with the candidates themselves signing the covenant, he is expecting them to follow the pact accordingly, without any reservations. We presume and believe that they will do it... that they will commit themselves to what they have signed, Varquez said. Provincial elections supervisor Ma. Corazon Montallana echoed the call of Bishop Varquez. As always, we hope that the conduct of elections here in Eastern Samar will be peaceful and meaningful. We expect them to follow the guidelines (relative to the elections), Montallana said, referring to the candi-

dates who are in running for various positions in the province. Major candidates seeking for governor and congressional posts and elective positions for Borongan were around with a major candidate, former congressman Teodulo Doloy Coquilla and Borongan City Mayor Ma. Fe Abunda among those absent during the covenant which was preceded by a Holy Mass ociated by Bishop Varquez. Rep. Ben Evardone, who is seeking for another term as the lone congressional representative of the province, said that he welcome the signing of the peace covenant. We welcome this initiative of our government agencies to make sure that the elections will be clean, fair, just and peaceful, Evadone said. His rival for the post he has held for six years now, outgoing Guiuan Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan, said that she was touched that such an initiative was made. Its my first time to attend this kind of initiative. And I was touched and moved as even candidates coming from far areas of the province were here, Gonzales-Kwan said. The congressional

candidate swore that she would follow the terms of the covenant. I hope everybody will do the same (and) those who were there will follow it to the letter, she said. Her political ally, reelectionist Governor Conrado Nicart, Jr., said that since he entered politics, he has been following its regulations. I am very serious with what I have signed, Nicart said, referring to the covenant. His rival, former Mayor Javier Zacate, said that he was glad that such peace covenant was held. He also said that he hope that during the start of the campaign period, all candidates would stick to their platforms and what they intend to do once elected and would not resort to mudslinging. The candidates should all discuss their platforms and not to malign each other, Zacate said. The signing of the peace covenant ended with the release of white balloons outside the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady. Also present were Police Director S/Supt. Allan Cuevillas and Colonel Romeo Labador, commanding ocer of the 801st Infantry Brigade.

Not just for a week

f what we mean by Holy Week is a week of living away from all forms of wickedness and irregularities, then what we need is not just one week, but a year-long exercise of holy living, given the kind of moral standard that we have in our country today. Thats what the Bible prescribes, anyway holy living at all times, and not just for seven days of every year. This is too short for people to practice righteousness, though they may religiously avoid committing sins during this period. Since the Bible, being the Word of God, ought to be followed by all those who profess belief in God, then such righteous living should thus characterize the lives of our people, particularly those in authority. Surely, it is good as futile for people to try be-

having like angels for a week, but living like devils the rest of the year. What can one week of holy living do in the collective efforts at implementing reforms in all government agencies that, historically, have been contaminated with various forms of corruption and irregularities? Does it not take year-round to correct anomalies that have been rooted in society? Of course, it does, even more if possible. Per religious observance in the Roman Catholic world, Holy Week will remain in place and will in no way extend as of late. This we do not suggest to happen literally. What we recommend is upright living, which may be equivalent to holiness, as a way of life for all, especially to those who have access to power, money,

The disaster called stage fright

Whoever has invented and popularized this stage fright thing must be punished for ruining other peoples lives by way of embarrassments, poor performances, self-hatred, and eventual shame, all in public. Seriously, if only someone could be that responsible for all this, he deserves severe penalty. This is no ones invention, nor is it caused by someone so intimidating. Its just ones weakness albeit traced to some kind of traumatic moment. It could be more of a psychological problem, so powerful that, when it attacks, it could siphon the wits out of ones mind, render him speechless, turn him pale, and make him tremble all over such that, if one is into a performance of something such as singing or the like, one would be unable to perform well. In other words, one may be gifted with the best abilities, say, in playing musical instruments, but with the attack of stage fright, the victim would be barely able to handle the innot necessarily caused by inabilities, as the skill is there, but by an uncontrollable feeling of being so shy and intimidated by the presence of others, particularly people with discriminating and judgmental spirits. Good if the people around understand enough, and could accept the failed performance. But if they are there with critical attitude, laughing and ridiculing the victim as a human disaster, then the damage to the latter is indeed worse. Next thing he might do is retreat to his inner self and punish it with isolation, refusing to socialize, if not resort to weird social behaviors to cover up that handicap. Indeed, stage fright is a destroyer, an enemy within. He who overcomes it is a great conqueror, for this beastly, monstrous foe is not an easy target; it rages violently and savagely from inside out, devouring its victim and reducing the latter into a useless grain of dust.

struments as his hands may shake vigorously and make him unable to apply his talent. This happens when ones stage fright is at its worst. From one hundred percent, ones ability could decrease at every attack, depending on how intense it is, and could plunge down to zero percent at times. At the height of an attack, usually in front of many people, the victim loses self control, particularly his thoughts, wisdom, abilities, confidence, and even bodily movements and facial expressions. Sometimes, one is left mentally

blank, not knowing what to do, melting at the glare of the eyes around and unable to gather the scattered self. This causes so much embarrassment that intensifies at ones increasing inability to do what is expected of him. After a failed performance, great shame creeps in, coupled with much frustration over the failure to live up to peoples expectations. This may lead to self hatredan animosity that is centered on self as the culprit and the villainous agent. This hatred is all the more aggravated by the thought that the failure was

maybe we may advise our family members to refrain from using electronics, the next time you see a friend, or a child, spending too much of their day facing a screen, we may touch the person and invite him back to the world of real social encounters. This could be a way to build empathic skills, but yours as well. Not only that, our health is also at stake. Smiling and laughing out loud allows a discernible synchrony emerging between two or more people while your respective brain firings, come to mirror each other. Its micromoments like these, in which a wave of good feeling rolls through two brains and bodies at once, that build your capacity to empathize as well as to improve your health. We have yet to find a good study or research work establishing the causal connection between relatives or among family members holding the exclusive right to continue what their predecessor kin had begun while holding elective office. The usual argument used in explaining family members succeeding the elective office of their predecessors in their selfserving desire to perpetuate themselves in power. Why would the continuance of programs and projects be dependent on a kin of the incumbent succeeding the office? Is it not that as long as there is a good development plan for the local unit to undertake whoever is in power? To say therefore that only family members of the incumbent politician have the capacity to pursue what had been started is untrue. Such thinking has caused the establishment of political dynasties in many parts of the country. The fellow aspiring to succeed a relative or family member holding elective office often claims that the desire is nothing but to continue what the incumbent has started. It is high time that voters realize the falseness and foolishness of the idea. It is one that mocks at the intelligence of the voters in exercising their right to elect their leaders. Surely, there are a lot among the electorate who are better able and capable to continue development efforts that had been in place by the incumbents. What is needed is a good development plan that will guide the course of succeeding leaderships. The absence of such document is a clear indicator that the incumbent is willing to be faulted if development goes wayward under a new leadership. People must therefore realize that being a wife or son or relative of the incumbent is not an assurance of continued development. What is being ensured is not the continuity of development programs and projects but the perpetual holding to power among members of the same family. The better choice therefore is one that is based on the qualifications and experience in relation to a good platform of government. It is wiser to consider other choices in the field than be fooled into the false suggestion that family members are what seem best for a continued

False hopes

Do you ever notice that half the people around you talk to you and at the same time bends over a digital screen, text messaging and connecting on to someone else somewhere else? Rude and embarrassing, isnt it. How much time do we typically spend with others? I am mad with my children who hugs their mobiles more than they do to me. They seem to be so attuned to others than their own families. Many times, I feel like throwing this small gadgets. Do you

feel the same way too? This digital technology has replaced the culture of talking and family huddles. I am reminded of toll collectors on the Golden Gate Bridge in Pacifica, California who will be replaced this week by a fully automated system; and some are lamenting the loss of a human touch. Similarly, Friedman in his The World is Flat reveals that the touchy feely service is matchless. Nothing can replace the heart, the spirit. In this Lent season,

Reclining with his disciples, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me. One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus side. So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant. He leaned back against Jesus chest and said to him, Master, who is it? Jesus answered, It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it. So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot. After he took the morsel, Satan entered to him. So Jesus said to him, What you are going to do, do quickly. So he took the morsel and left at once. And it was night. When he had left, Jesus said, Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. (If God is glorified in him,) God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, Where I go you cannot come, so now I say it to you. Simon Peter said to him, Master, where are you going? Jesus answered (him), Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later. Peter said to him, Master, why cant I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you. Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times.

who glided their way to positions of power but have failed to deliver their campaign promise of deliverance for the poor and deprived for reasons known only to them It is for this reason that the local Roman Catholic Church of the Philippines noticeably includes prayers for this election even in general intercession. For instance are the invocations contained in the Palm Sundays Prayer of the Faithful. The Church prays that those who serve in ecclesiastical and public office may follow the example of Christ the King who heals, forgives, and suffers for the good of Gods people and that those who continue to crucify Christ in their brothers and sisters through their corruption, cruelty, their refusal to stand by the truth, their hatred and their jealousy, may follow the example of the repentant thief who acknowledged his sins and asked to be remembered by Christ. IN GOD IS OUR STRENGHT

(While in England) I have watched all manner of royal parades and processions for weddings and coronations. I have seen there much splendour and opulence. I have seen every branch of police force, royal guards, cavalry being paraded, gun salutes and planes flying past. Behind the crimson carpets and flashing jewels. I have seen a massive show of strength, military and otherwise. This is a show of triumph and victory. Jesus too was triumphant and victorious in his resurrection, but he taught us to be humble by riding in a donkey, when he entered Jerusalem as king. If we are humble, we will always be conscious of our human frailty and hence our need for strength and support from God. As the suffering servant of God, all through his passion, Jesus could repeat the prophecy: My God has become my strength (Is 49:5). Peter in todays gospel reveals no such humility, he was a man who was cocksure of his own strength to follow the Lord even to death. But Jesus warned him The cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times (Jn 13:38). And Peter did disown him. We should therefore be humble. Our daily temptations alone are enough to keep us humble. How subtle, how persuasive, how tender, how sensuous are temptations! When I leave my house, temptations is waiting to jump on me in my most unguarded moment. I read a newspaper, and there it is hidden in the words of a harmless story. And so we need to be watchful lest we stumble. But humility is not morbid timidity. It is to make a proper assessment of oneself. It is a joyful and childlike dependence on God. (His Word is Life by Vima Dasan, S.J., published by Paulines. Visit us at www.paulines.ph or at Paulines Media Center, Real St., Tacloban City, Tel. Betrayal (pagtataksil, in Tagalog dialect). This was how Fr. Larry Faraon described the Holy Week in his homily during the Talitha Kum TV Mass last Sunday. The Holy Week, he said, is a week of betrayal, demonstrating how the same people, who cheered and honored Christ Jesus in his entry to Jerusalem, would later be the ones to cry for His crucifixion in exchange of a hardened murderer and rebel named Barabbas. Albeit as Fr. Faraon added, this week, marked Christs salvific moment, where he had shown extreme service to mankind. Fr. Faraon emphatically defined betrayal as most painful and grievous sin against God because of the aspect of closeness of man to God. It is as painful as

being abandoned by someone we have reposed confidence on, according to him. But in spite of mans infidelity and desertion, Christ, in the Passion Sunday Gospel, still had the compassion and humility to say, in fact the first in His Seven Last Words, Father, forgive them, they do not know what they do, he added. By this, Christ becomes the strongest, remarked the priest. Betrayal is not a thing of the past. In fact it is becoming more of the usual than the exceptional circumstance. These days, the people, who entrust their lot and future to political candidates, in the same vein, suffer similar experience of adversity in the hands of those they vote for. Not all of them though. Save the case of the good ones, there are many trapos and bimpos

Holy Week is fast approaching, where the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of His earthly life, from His messianic entry to Jerusalem until His Blessed Passion and Glorious Resurrection. And to make our observance of the Lenten Season more meaningful, Fr. Edgar Macalalag, Parish Priest of Sacred Heart of Jesus invited Fr. Felix Ebacitas to conduct a Recollection, an expert in Exorcism, for the Parishs Lay Ministers, Lectors, Choir, Altar Boys, and the Apostles 2013. Fr. Felix reiterated that our Universal Calling today which is our primary problem of the world is to be Holy. And we have to pray to be holy because the Paths of Prayers lead to the Paths of Holiness. Prayer is the beginning and end of Holiness as St. Therese of Avila said. Prayer is a duty and a great joy because it is a dialogue with Jesus. And in Prayers, we are with Jesus, says Pope Paul II. Ardent Prayers is the greatest happiness we experience Our worries and anxieties will disappear through Prayers says

To turn to God is to rely on Him and not on Power and Personalities, says Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Fr. Felix reminded all of us also that the Holy Mass in the highest form of Worship and the Devotion to the Holy Eucharist is the noblest of all devotions. God Himself cannot bring about an action holier and greater than the celebration of the Mass because the Holy Mass can be said to be a synthesis summing up the Incarnation of God and the Redemption of Mankind. He told us about the story of St. Thomas Moore of England where he was summoned to come to the palace right away by King Henry VIII and St. Thomas let the King wait, for he has to nish the Mass he was attending first. And this story rekindle my memory during the times of the Marcoses where our schedule to perform in Olot, Tolosa for the former First Lady, Imelda R. Marcos was at 7 pm and suddenly it was changed to 5 pm and the PSG (Presidential Security Guards) told me to come right away but I was scheduled to hear Mass that afternoon because it was a Sunday. After thinking heavily, I decided to hear Mass rst and would you believe how God reperformances in my betamax tapes, and it was played throughout the night with superstar guests like, American Consul General, Armacost, Hollywood star, George Hamilton, the socialite, Cristina Ford and other international and national personalities to watch it. It taught me a great lesson that we have to make God our rst priority always. Fr. Felix told us also of the many miracles he had encountered, like his

Rev. Fr. Amadeo Al-

May this Holy Week be fruitful, heartfelt and meaningful to all of us.

May this week be the beginning of those genuine transformations for the better that should take place in corruptionladen agencies. May it be a turning point of a holy year in their lifestyles and moral standing that could translate to their leadership and public service.

Penitents...

Monsignor Bernard Pantin said that the Church is strongly opposing to this tradition in some parts of country wherein faithful as part of their penance for their sin inflict harm to their body. This is not the teaching of the church for penance, the parish priest of Our Lords Transfiguration Cathedral said. If you would like to do penance, the Bible said that lend your heart not your garment. This means you should give yourself for giving service to those who are needy, said Msgr Pantin.

Although, inflicting pain to your body is also a form of saying that you are sorry for the sin that you have done, but this is not sucient and this is not the real sense of remorse but instead showing to the people that you regret all the sin that you have done and you are now a new person and will not do the mistake youve done before, this is the real sense of penance, Pantin added. Moreover, Department of Health Regional Director Jaime Bernadas reminds the Catholic faithful that inflicting injury to ones body would put someones health into danger. Like those who practice the nailing to the cross, the health ocial said that a person may get tetanus if the nails used are not properly sanitized. Aside from tetanus the health ocial added that it could also

lead into other health problems if a person would inflict harm to their body using harmful materials. The Church even disallow this practice, so why should we do this. Its much better if instead of harming our body we feel sorry for our sin and ask forgiveness, Bernadas said. (ROEL AMAZONA)

positions and projects are at the disposal of the powers that be, depriving the less fortunate who lack connections to have equal access to opportunities in government jobs or projects. The clout of politicians are still determinative in obtaining what appears as a right of every citizen but for lack of political backing could not be obtained or availed of under the setup. Such is how political power is made an object of succession perpetuated among powerful families. As we draw closer to election day, people must consider seriously the culling of the best among the candidates in the field. The building of political dynasty

is happening due to our uncaring tolerance of gullibly submitting to the dictates of politicians who spit the most poisonous venom of fallacious talks and grand deceptions. Many promises come out from the mouths of those aspiring to win the trust and confidence of the people. All we need is a deliberate discerning reflection on how we desire to set the course of our future. We need to live actively watchful about the emerging forces that utter nothing more than tales of false hopes. Comments to alellema@hot-
