Lesson Self- Assessment for ED 315 Name: Sarah Ward Lesson topic: War Time Economy Date: 10/23/12

School/grade level/ number of students: Ronald Reagan HS/10th/36 Name of Cooperating Teacher: Maureen McCanna Planning and preparation: My task was to explore war time economies, focusing on WWI and WWII. I decided to look at war bonds and rationing and compare it to George Bush and our current wartime economy. I got them engaged showing a war bond clip from the movie Captain America. This really got their attention and got them discussing. Then we analyzed some propaganda posters. Then we watched a video from WWII learning how to ration. I had them talk about how their lives would be different if we had to ration. The George Bush article was a good wrap up to tie things together and bring it back to the now. Classroom environment: They worked in groups for several times during this lesson which got them talking and sharing. The rationing exercise was great and got them thinking about the differences in war economies now. I made connections with their daily lives when discussing the pictures and interviews which got them to share more easily. I had the whole class discuss the George Bush article to get them out of group mode. Instruction: I thought that I used a variety of instructional strategies to get the points across. I believe the WWII video was really engaging and definitely something I would use again in the future. I showed the propaganda posters on the overhead, but next time I might print some out and laminate them so they can pass them around and get a closer look. I thought group discussion worked well for this lesson and then wrapping it up with whole group was a good ending statement for the lesson. Assessment: Each group was held responsible for sharing on their assigned poster. They shared with the class and I was able to ask different people in the group to ensure that they had all communicated. During the rationing discussion and George Bush discussion I used the notecards to randomly call on students so that I could get random comments. This way each student was held accountable. I also collected the rationing worksheets to make sure they participated. Professional responsibilities: I found that it was important to relate every lesson to the learning intention posted on the board and the unit question, so I tried to make a point to do that this time. Reflection:

I incorporated smaller group this time so it got more students involved. I really need to focus on my transitions. I know that in a 90 minute class you are covering more than one topic, so how can I better transition next time.
