The Great Escape

Harry Houdini was the most famous illusionist in history and was a particularly ingenious escape artist. People thought of all kinds of ways to keep him locked up. Given time, tools, and his secret plans, he was always able to concoct an escape plan. He was put in a coffin and buried; he was sewn in a canvas bag; he was sealed in metal milk cans and welded together. He did not escape death. No skill, trickery, or illusion would work. Each year on the anniversary of his death, his wife would hold a sance trying vainly to contact his dead Dr. Hayes Wicker spirit. He had promised that he would make contact. Years Senior Pastor later, she hopelessly blew out the last candle. There is only One Who made good on His promise and made the great escape from death once and for all Jesus Christ, the Lord of Life. He died for our sins, was buried, and rose on the third day (Matthew 16:21). How will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? (Hebrews 2:3). Poet Archibald MacLeish wrote, A world ends when its metaphor has died. Jesus was not a symbol of life, He was Life and conquered death (John 11:25). Your world is just beginning when you discover that He was historical and that His resurrection is verifiable. In 1997, 61% of Americans believed in miracles by the power of God. There is now almost a miracle-mania as people are infatuated with marvellism, rushing to see icons that weep, paintings that bleed, angel visitations, crystals that heal, and so forth. We must navigate through the charlatans, crackpots, cranks, and cultists, then come to the very real and powerful Christ. A Gallup Poll has found that one in six Americans claims to have communicated with a deceased love one, while one in four claims to have communicated telepathically with another person. One in seven claims to have seen a UFO. Ad infinitum; ad nauseum. Sorry, Mrs. Houdini, but Jesus is the only One Who is The Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). Blessed are they who did not see and yet believed (John 20:29). On this same Easter weekend, you can believe that though you have sinned and deserve eternal death (Romans 6:23) that Christ died for your sins to pay the penalty of your punishment and the debt which you owed (Romans 5:8). Believe that Jesus is the Christ (John 20:31), trusting Him alone for salvation, repenting of your sins, and turning your life over to Him. You cannot escape the first death, but blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power (Revelation 20:6).
