visit our web page: www.addigest.com/Calhoun/ads.htm DID YOU KNOW 1 OUT OF 4 DOGS IN WASHINGTON COUNTY TEST POSITIVE FOR LYME DISEASE? THE EMERGING THREAT OF VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES
Vector-borne diseases are becoming common in companion animals. The reason for the apparent increase is likely due to more frequent contact with the vectors that transmit these bacterial infections. Vector-borne zoonotic diseases result from disease-causing agents or pathogens that naturally infect wildlife, and are transmitted to humans by carriers such as mosquitoes and ticks. In short, theyre diseases transmitted between animals and humans. These vectors, like tick and mosquitos, have likely benefited from climatic change, allowing them to thrive in their habitats as well as expand into regions that were once less hospitable for their survival. With increased numbers of intermediate hosts, the food source for ticks is more abundant, allowing for greater development and propagation of their larval stages. As the threat of exposure to these vectors increases, the need to test for and prevent the infections they carry becomes more important. BORADOR ANIMAL HOSPITAL is offering a Heartworm/ Lyme/Anaplasmosis Testing Clinic on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 1:00 4:00 pm. The cost is only $35.00 per test plus you will receive your first dose of HeartgardPlus FREE! No appointment necessary & all are welcome. Borador Animal Hospital, PC Mary C. This family cared for Asher until he could come here to find his forever home. Asher is a very sweet guy who likes to be held, and can be placed into an indoor/outdoor home. Asher would also be fine with other cats and children. If Asher sounds like the cat for you, please stop by and visit him. Hineine came to Second Chance because his owner was moving and unable to bring him along. He is used to being an indoor/ outdoor cat and prefers to go to the bathroom outside. I like to spend my time playing with toys and getting lots of attention. I also like to play hide and seek with my blankets. If I sound like the little guy for you, come visit me! Blinkys Random Thoughts

The Bathtub Test. During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in a Nursing Home? Well, he said, we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub. Oh, I understand, I said. A normal person would use the Bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup. No he said. A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want us to put you in a bed near the door or the window?

ANTHROPOMORPHIC NOUNS We are all familiar with a Herd of cows, a Flock of chickens, a School of fish and a Gaggle of geese. However, less widely known are: a Pride of lions, a Murder of crows (as well as their cousins the rooks and ravens), an Exaltation of doves and, presumably because they look so wise: a Parliament of owls. Now consider a group of Baboons. Baboons are the loudest, most dangerous, most obnoxious, most viciously aggressive and least intelligent of all primates. And what is the proper collective noun for a group of baboons? Believe it or not... A Congress! A CONGRESS OF BABOONS!That pretty much explains the things that come out of Washington! I wonder who started that one!

AWARD GIVEN- We all have many generations and branches in our ancestral trees. Chasing out the mysteries in each is fun to a genealogist. The research, organizing, writing and publishing of the data found is often a thankless project. However, Poultney resident Gertrude P. Horridge recently was bestowed with the Lola Parks Spohn Nielsen Award by the Parks Family for her work. The award, a plaque, is given annually by the Parks Family to living honorees to thank them for the service and research that they have done on behalf of their family. Gertrude received the award for her dedicated research about her Parks ancestors, a Wells, Rutland County, Vermont branch of the ancestral family group. Gertrude was also given recognition in The Parks Family Newsletter, a division of the Robert and Laban Parks of Ohio subgroup which is also affiliated with the Parke Society. Gertrude said that she began researching after retirement with zero genealogy research knowledge and after purchasing and learning to use a computer and genealogy software.

LECTURES OF INTEREST AT THE CCC AND MORE In keeping with its tradition to honor history during the month of March, the Salem Courthouse Community Center will be commencing a series of informative talks on Thursday, March 7 at 7:30 pm. Educator Debi Craig, who also has been an integral part of the NorthStar Historical Project, will offer a fascinating talk about Susan B. Anthony. Anthony was born in Adams, MA in 1820. In 1826, her family moved to the familiar home on Route 29 in Battenville where they resided until 1837. During the Depression of 1837, her parents were forced to declare bankruptcy, and the house was lost. Anthony played a pivotal role in the 19th century struggle for womens rights. Among her many notable accomplishments, she was an abolitionist, educational reformer, labor activist, temperance worker, suffragist, and womens rights campaigner. Ms. Craig will provide insight into the life of this remarkable reformer whose dedicated life paved the way for many of the rights women enjoy today. Additional talks of interest will take place on the following two Thursday evenings as well. On March 21, Dick McGuire, former Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets for New York, will present a talk entitled The Miracle of Food Production. The final talk in the series will take place on March 21 when the Executive Director of Old Fort House Museum and Town of Fort Edward Historian Paul McCarty will speak about the circumstances under which a free-born African-American, Solomon Northup, became a slave for twelve years. There is no admission charge for this series which will be presented in the first floor Archive Room. Also during the month of March, history will come to life in the Great Hall with an exhibit entitled Antiques from the Museums at Penope Farm. Penope Farm of Cambridge, owned by Dick McGuire, boasts of nine museums which provide some insight as to how the rural folks of the 1800s and early 1900s lived. On loan to the CCC will be a display of domestic and agricultural antiques of great interest. The opening reception for this new exhibit will take place on Friday, March 8 from 5 to 7 pm. The public is invited to attend. MONTHLY BREAKFAST- The Johnsonville Rescue Squad located @ 4 River Rd. Is holding their monthly breakfast Sunday April 7th 7:30-11:00. Cost adults $6 children $3. Menu consists of eggs, French toast, pancakes, sausage, omelets, hash browns, juice, fruit & coffee. For more info call 753-9549 Good time to drop off your returns and check into signing up to volunteer to become a member.

COMMUNITY GARDEN MEETING- On St. Pattys Day I saw the first robins pecking at the lawn. Today over a foot of snow and still falling. Tomorrow is the first day of Spring. Sounds like March in the North Country! As gardeners we are eternal optimists, and have faith that when our seedlings are ready for transplanting the soil will be warm, the skies sunny and the growing season will be upon us once again. On Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. an organizational meeting will be held in the offices of Warrensburgh Beautification on the second floor of our Senior Center at 3847 Main Street. Fourteen plots are available, plus additional growing area in the garden annex. Individuals, youth groups, civic organizations and businesses who would like to grow their own fresh produce for themselves or others are encouraged to adopt a plot. New this year is the option for students from Warrensburgh Elementary School to grow food in preparation for a potential school gardening program to begin in 2014. On site composting is available for those who wish to recycle nutrients. Free soil testing and beginners workshops will be offered on an as needed basis. For further information, to reserve a plot or to renew a plot, please e-mail or call Teresa Whalen, Community Garden Coordinator, at taawhalen@yahoo.com or 466-5497. NEWS FROM THE DAIRY PRINCESS- Easter is almost here, a great time to spend with family and close friends. At our home we enjoy listening to our grandparents, hearing about old farm stories and about how things have changed. Most dairy farms are generations old, like the farm that I grew up on that is four generations old. As farmers we learn from our family members about caring for the cows and the environment. Its a family tradition to work on the farm and each generation adds on to these traditions. A family tradition that my siblings and I enjoy is showing cows, we spend countless hours preparing, grooming, and practicing all for the big shows at the fair. I am glad that I have been able to spend long hours working on the farm with my grandparents, my parents, and my siblings. 365 days a year, 7 days a week, from sun up until sun down, it is family time on the farm that means so much. Some of our best memories come from sitting around the dinner table after a great meal; we always have a big glass of milk, and sometimes ice cream or some apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese. This is the same way for the 5,300 dairy farms across New York State of which 98 percent are family-owned. For your Easter dinner this year, be sure to thank and support your local dairy farmers. The 40th anniversary of National Agriculture Day was on March 19, 2013. Its a day set aside to appreciate the farmers and ranchers who provide food and fiber products we use every day. Ag Day is about recognizing - and celebrating - the contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives. MONTHLY BREAKFAST- The VFW from Valley Falls on Popular Street will be holding its monthly breakfast Sunday April 14th 8:00-11:00 sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary. PLEASE NOTE NEW HOURS!! Cost adults $7 children $3. NEW WAY OF SERVING: Menu consists of made to order eggs, French toast & pancakes, bacon, sausage, biscuit & sausage gravy, juice, fruit & coffee. Profit to support veterans programs. The Free Dinner begins at 5:30 PM followed at 6:30 PM with a Hymn Sing featuring Hymns for Him. For information, call 518-642-2672.

GETTING YOUR SUGGESTIONS HEARD The Business Insiders Young Entrepreneur Council recently asked for best tips for measuring (and increasing) employee engagement. A founder of a national cancer organization responded with, Full transparency breeds accountability, which naturally transitions into ownership. When someone is invested in their role and feels pride and ownership, theyre much more likely to start suggesting improvements and working hard to better their work and the company. So what does that have to do with Toastmasters? Plenty! HollyAnn Carbino, VP of Education exclaimed. Evaluators are the communications backbone of Toastmasters. They invest themselves in listening to and watching a speaker and providing them with encouragement and, more importantly, constructive criticism on how the speaker could improve. This exercise in observation, contemplation, out-of-the-box thinking in some cases, and tact are vital to Toastmasters and can be immediately applied in the workplace to initiate improvements and make things better. Come see how Toastmasters can help you get your suggestions heard by visiting Washington County Toastmasters at our next meeting, Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Annex II Building, next to the Washington County Cornell Cooperative Extension Building, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY. Washington County Toastmasters meets first and third Wednesdays at 7:00PM. For more information about Washington County Toastmasters, please visit www.washingtoncountytoastmasters.org. Guests are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to settle in. Come join us, and bring a friend! NEWS FROM THE DAIRY PRINCESS- Did you know that each morning 25 million kids go to school, and some of them are hungry? A large number of children start their day off on the wrong foot by not eating a healthy breakfast. Hunger effects students ability to learn and their attention span. We can change this with a program called Breakfast in the Classroom. The program provides students with a healthy breakfast each morning at school directly in their classrooms. Most school breakfast programs require students to eat in the cafeteria and this can make students feel singled out from others. Thats why this program makes sure that students eat in the classroom together with other students. Research shows that schools providing universal school breakfast (served free to all students) have higher breakfast participation, especially when breakfast is served in the classroom, resulting in a higher percentage of students consuming breakfast. These well-balanced, healthy meals include dairy products like milk, yogurt, or cheese that helps a student reach their goal of three dairy products every day. The nine nutrients in milk help to nourish their body as well as build their bones . The meal only takes about ten minutes to eat and provides plenty of benefits for the students. Students who eat breakfast have higher math and reading skills than students that dont eat breakfast. I eat breakfast each morning and know how important it is to my learning skills. I recently attended an event at the New York State Capital that supported and encouraged schools to add a Breakfast in the Classroom program. Please contact your school to encourage them to offer this great program. HAT DAY- Rensselaer Countys Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road, Grafton NY will be hosting a Hat Day. NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org.

UNCLE WALLY WONDERS

Kelly Lynch of WGY obtained information from the Albany County DA's office which indicated that of all the crimes committed in Albany County last year, NONE were committed by a person who owned a gun with a legal permit. In other words, all those crimes involving a gun were committed by people having a gun illegally. The Safe Act, therefore, is a complete waste of time and resources. To enforce this unconstitutional law will only result in punishing legal gun owners. We in upstate NY cannot do much about Mr Silver and his band of leftists, but we can punish those who represent us in upstate by voting out those who sided with Silver and Cuomo on the gun issue. When are we going to wake up and deal with the fact that our representatives no longer represent the hard working and law abiding citixens? I wonder.
