Description of Position for

The Contemporary Music Leader

Accountability
The Contemporary Music Leader shall be accountable to the Corporation of the parish of St. Thomas Anglican Church and responsible to the Rector in day-to-day matters concerning the position. The Contemporary Music Leader together with the Rector and the Organidchoir Director share responsibility for the provision of suitable musical leadership of the corporate worship of the parish and in working toward the music objectives of the parish. Corporation and Vestry shall represent the people of the parish to the Rector and the Contemporary Music Leader in the general diiection and shape of our worship and may appoint a committee of the Vestry for this purpose.

Role and Responsibility


1. The Contemporary Music Leader will provide leadership in the music and to the musicians of the 9AM Contemporary Sunday Service by: a) Preparing all service music required in cooperation with the Rector; b) Developing as high a quality of music possible given the parish resources; c) Overseeing all musicians and singers participating in 9AM music leadership; d) Maintaining the rich array of music which we have received; e) Encouraging a broad range of contemporary hymns, songs and liturgical settings which give expression to current developments in the Anglican Church. 2. The Contemporary Music Leader will strengthen the music of the parish by: a) Exhiiiting a high standard of musicianship and leadership ability; b) Recruiting, as needed, members for 9AM music ministry teams fiom inside the congregation; c) Convening, teaching and providing opportunities for music ministry teams to develop their own skills and seek further training; l l ages to participate in the 9AM service by d) Providing opportunities for parishioners of a promoting the ministry of music leadership and encouraging involvement of parishioners with other musical abilities; e) Providing music at special services such as: Christmas Eve Contemporary Service, Good Friday and others, when requested by the Rector; f) Providing music leadership, in cooperation with the O r g d C h o i r Director, at combined services (Sundays at 1 such as: Welcome Home, Stewardship, Christmas Pageant, Annual General Meeting, Congregational Meeting, and Patronal Festival; g) Providing music leadership when requested at weddings and fimerals and memorial services if available. (An additional fee will be paid by the families for this service. - See Remuneration); h) Participating in outreach events such as Lift the Spirit concert, CursiUo and Diocesan Gatherings, and other invitations as they arise and as able; i) Acting as a resource person for the development of the youth band, children's music (including Christmas Pageant and Sunday School music) and other contemporary music initiatives (i.e., other ad hoc groups which might form for purposes of music leadership in the absence of the core Music Ministry Team).

3. The Contemporary Music Leader will provide internal and external communications, reporting and budgeting services by: a) Preparing reports for staffmeetings, liturgical meetings and other meetings of the parish as required; b) Writing reports for parish annual general meetings and congregational meetings as required; c) Preparing newsletter and newspaper articles for St. Thomas' Times, The Messenger, Anglican Journal and other media as required; d) Maintaining the program budget for the contemporary music program, including purchasing of music, and related items (i.e., CD's, books, training manuals, vocal warmup resources, etc.) as well as the repair and maintenance of church-owned contemporary music equipment; for legal copyright and licensing purposes to l lrequired e) Preparing and filing a CCLI and Licensing.
4. The Contemporary Music Leader will be aware of music developments within the Anglican Church of Canada by: a) Establishing collegial relationships with other church musicians; b) Participating in church-related workshops and seminars; c) Seeking information from the Rector, the Diocese and the National Church. 5. The Contemporary Music Leader will participate in the whole ministry of the Parish as it seeks to be faithfid to the mission as stated by the parish by: a) Participating in the staff meetings when requested, quarterly liturgical meetings and any other meetings as needed to discuss and plan for the music life of the parish; b) Supporting decisions of Vestry and Corporation with respect to directions and objectives for the parish; c) Being an active member of the staff ministry team of the parish.

6. The Contemporary Music Leader will share with the Sound SystemJTechnical Team the responsibility for the use of the parish's contemporary music resources including the sound system, overhead projector, overhead files and any accompanying computer equipment, software, electronic music files, keyboard, and contemporary music library by: a) Ensuring, in consultation with the Vestry, that only qualified people have use of the sound system and instruments; b) Arranging for regular maintenance and repairs as necessary of church-owned contemporary music equipment ; c) Repairing and maintaining a l l contemporary music equipment as listed in the insurance inventory, according to the approved budget; d) Maintaining the parish's h'brary of contemporary music and overhead files.

Rights and Privileges


1. The Contemporary Music Leader has access to budgetary fimds for the purchase of contemporary music and related items to be determined in consultation with the Rector and the Vestry. 2. The Contemporary Music Leader has the right to accept outreach opportunities for the music ministry team with prior written approval of Vestry. 3. The Contemporary Music Leader has the right to be away from Sunday morning services a maximum of four times per calendar year for such outreach opportunities provided that

suitable music leadership is in place. 4. The Contemporary Music Leader has the right to be away fiom Sunday morning services for personal reasons provided that permission is granted by the Rector and that suitable music leadership is in place. (See remuneration for fkther details)*. 5. The Contemporary Music Leader has the right to seek outside training and to have that training paid for as per the current budget.

Remuneration
The position of Contemporary Music Leader is based on a ten-month position fiom September I to June 30, of approximately 10 hours per week of on-site work. This work is broken down as follows: Sunday Practice and Services St& Meetinglpreparation time Evening Rehearsal Special Services and additional meetings (averaged over 10 months) 2.5 hours 2.0 hours 3.0 hours 2.5 hours 10.0 hours

It is understood that personal rehearsal time, research, licensing reporting and preparation for the above on-site time will be over and above the stated hourly expectations and may take place off site. The Contemporary Music Leader shall be contracted for $. ..... a month plus GST. This stipend will be reviewed and set annually at the Annual General Meeting as part of the parish budget on the recommendation of the Corporation. Additional fees shall be paid by the f$milies for such services as weddings and funerals. Those fees shall be determined between the Contemporary Music Leader and the family.

* Should the Contemporary Music Leader wish to be away &omthe parish, helshe will be responsible for finding suitable music leadership to serve in hislher stead. Should the replacement require payment, it will be the responsibility of the Contemporary Music Leader to remunerate that person.
