Chapter 1 - Uzumaki Naruto (1/2) Cover Pre-timeskip Naruto stands on top of two large frogs (green and red)

with a scro ll in his mouth and two giant brushes behind his back. He also seems to have a l ipstick bar hanging from his shoulder. Chapter summary 1) Infodump about the sealing of the Nine Tailed Fox. -Nine Tailed Fox said to be able to destroy mountains and cause tsunamis with it s tails. -Sealer identified as the 4th Hokage. 2) First look at Konoha and Hokage Mountain. First appeareance of Naruto, shown painting the Hokage heads. -Electric wires observed in lines over the rooftops. The setting's technological strangeness starts early. 3) First appeareance of 3rd Hokage, when ninjas inform him about Naruto's vandal ism. Crowd of ninja tell Naruto to stop from the top of Hokage Tower. -Sarutobi's reaction to ninja calling for him is "Naruto causing trouble again?" . Naruto fanon is poisonous in its stupidity at times, but this reaction strongl y suggests that the kid was a right brat. 4) Naruto mocks ninja crowd, while Sarutobi shows up on the roof. First appearea nce of Iruka who tells Naruto to cut that shit out. Naruto seems genuinely scare d of Iruka. 5) Iruka brings a tied Naruto back to Ninja Academy and warns him against causin g stupid trouble the day before Ninja Graduation Exam. Naruto doesn't seem too i mpressed by the threats and Iruka orders the rest of the class to do the Transfo rmation Technique. -Naruto is noted to have failed twice previously the Ninja Graduation Exam. 6) Class makes a line and students start doing the transformation in turns, whil e grumbling about this being Naruto's fault. Naruto is unconcerned and tries to transform when his turn comes up. -Ninja technique: Transformation Technique. 7) Naruto turns into Naruko. Iruka suffers rocket nosebleed. Naruto lols. Iruka scolds Naruto for inventing stupid ninjutsu. -Ninja technique: Sexy no Jutsu. 8) Naruto cleans the Hokage Monument with Iruka keeping an eye on him, who tells him that he isn't going anywhere until he finishes cleaning up. Naruto claims t hat he doesn't give a crap, since he has no one waiting for him. 9) Iruka, out of apparent pity, offers to buy Naruto ramen if he does a good job . Naruto is visibly overjoyed and promises to do a good job. First appeareance o f Ichiraku Ramen Bar, where Naruto is taken by Iruka. 10) Iruka asks Naruto about his reasons for vandalising the Hokage Monument. Hok age is explained as the title of the strongest ninjas of the village. Naruto sta tes that he'll one day become the Hokage that will surpass all previous Hokages. 11) Naruto asks Iruka to lend him his forehead protector, but Iruka refuses sayi ng that he'll get one if he passes the Ninja Graduation Exam. Naruto is frustrat ed, so he asks for a second bowl of ramen instead. -Mention of graduation as ninja being a coming-of-age ceremony. 12) Graduation testing requires showing mastery of the Clone Technique. Naruto t ries, but generates an extremely fragile looking clone. -Ninja technique: Clone Technique. -Clone Technique stated to be Naruto's weakest skill. 13) Iruka fails Naruto. First appeareance of Mizuki, who suggests that they let him pass since he created a clone. Iruka refuses on the grounds of Naruto's clon e being lame looking and the other students generating two. -The lipstick-like thing from the cover image reappears hanging around Naruto's neck. WTF is that thing?

14) Naruto watches crowd of just graduated academy students and happy parents fr om a nearby swing, looking miserable. Some comment that he is... and then shut u p commenting that they aren't supposed to talk about what he is. -Naruto is the only academy student of his promotion to fail the initial test. 15) Sarutobi asks Iruka to come with him for a chat. Mizuki encounters Naruto an d starts talking with him, revealing Iruka to have lost his parents at an early age. Naruto complains that he is the only student Iruka picks on. 16) Mizuki says that Iruka probably sees himself in Naruto and asks Naruto to fe el sympathy, since he also has no parents. Naruto laments failing to graduate an d Mizuki offers to tell him a "special secret". 17) Naruto sneaks into the Hokage's house at night and is found out by Sarutobi, but Naruto incapacitates him with Sexy no Jutsu. Finds huge scroll in Hokage's library and escapes the same way he entered. -Sarutobi's residence, in spite of certain fanfiction representations, seems to be an apparently normal building in the urban center with the kanji for fire on the roof (supposing that I am right about the symbol which is not altogether imp ossible). 18) Naruto studies the huge scroll he stole in the middle of a forest. The first technique listed in the scroll is mentioned to be the Shadow Clone Technique. M eanwhile, in Konoha, Iruka thinks about the conversation he had with the Hokage, who essentially told him to be less of an ass with Naruto. 19) Iruka flashback. First appeareance of the Nine Tailed Fox. Mook ninjas talk about having to hold the line against the beast until the 4th can come to their aid and Young!Iruka cries about being taken away when his fathers are still figh ting. -By obvious implication, Iruka was the son of ninjas. 20) Mizuki wakes up Iruka with news about Naruto stealing the Scroll of Sealing and them having to go to the Hokage's residence. Sarutobi explains to a number o f assembled ninja that the Scroll contains Nasty Stuff that the 4th Hokage decid ed to make forbidden. 21) Sarutobi says that it has been half a day since the scroll was stolen, so he tells the ninja to get cracking. Iruka decides to go check out the woods. Mizuk i decides to spread the news about Naruto stealing the scroll a little more befo re meeting with Naruto and murdering the poor idiot. -Yeah. Nobody knew that the Hokage was KO for like twelve hours. Konoha security was the bestest ever since day 1. 22) Iruka finds Naruto asleep in the woods and wakes him up. Naruto makes some k ind of joke about finding Iruka, who is bugged about Naruto looking downright ha ppy. 23) Iruka comments that Naruto looks beat up, which Naruto explains with "traini ng an incredible jutsu" and asks to be allowed to graduate. Iruka then asks abou t the scroll. Naruto answers that Mizuki told him about it and the place in whic h they are. 24) Iruka realizes that something is wrong with Mizuki and pushes Naruto out of the way, right before a dozen kunai turn Naruto into shish kebab. Instead, the k unai nail Iruka to the wall of a nearby shed. 25) Mizuki praises Iruka for finding the moron and orders Naruto to give him the scroll. Iruka orders him not to give the scroll no matter what and starts remov ing the half dozen or so kunai that hit him. Naruto is generally too freaked out by the whole thing to give anything to anyone even if he wanted to. -Mizuki carries a couple shuriken the size of a backpack. What's the deal with t hose, besides alleged rule of cool? Timeline observations Day 1 - Naruto vandalizes Hokage Monument. During the night, Naruto has dinner w ith Iruka at Ichiraku's. Day 2 - Ninja Graduation Exam. During the night, Naruto steals and studies the S croll of Sealing. Day 3 - Iruka finds Naruto. Confrontation with Mizuki.

Chapter 1 - Uzumaki Naruto (2/2) Chapter summary 26) Iruka tells Naruto that the scroll contains Top Secret Ninjutsu and that Miz uki has played him for a fool to steal it. Mizuki's reply is to "tell Naruto the truth" despite Iruka's protests and starts talking about the sealing of the Nin e Tails, 12 years before the start of the series. 27) Mizuki reveals the existence of a village law that Naruto wasn't supposed to know about. Naruto wants to know more. 28) Mizuki tells Naruto that he is the Nine Tailed Fox. Naruto requests addition al clarification and Mizuki gloats about Naruto being what killed Iruka's parent s and destroyed the village, while Iruka keeps shouting him to stop. 29) Mizuki keeps rubbing salt in the wound (while preparing to hit Naruto with o ne of his ridiculous giant shuriken) by telling Naruto that everyone has lied to him and everyone hates him, including Iruka because he killed his parents. Naru to is so pissed that energy seems to explode out of his body. 30) While Mizuki keeps being a big mean to Naruto, Iruka flashbacks to his conve rsation with Sarutobi who apparently told him that Naruto is a brat in order to get attention (even of the negative kind), since he has no family and everyone k ind of hates him. So, in Sarutobi's opinion, being Naruto sucks. -Mizuki comments that the contents of the Scroll of Sealing were used to seal th e Nine Tails. 31) Iruka saves Naruto's life by blocking Mizuki's giant shuriken with his back. Everyone is surprised by this action. 32) Iruka flashbacks to his own unhappy child-hood. After losing his parents, he became an unbearable brat for the same reasons as Naruto and being academically challenged found himself a somewhat comfortable role as the class clown. It sti ll sucked, though. 33) Iruka asks Naruto's forgiveness for being an asshole without considering the poor kid's feelings and says that he laments not having done a better job. Mizu ki seems angry about the whole scene. -At this point, Iruka has been stabbed six times or so and has perhaps a foot of shuriken blade embeded on his back. Guy is hardcore. 34) Naruto legs it. Mizuki starts gloating about how Naruto is the unforgiving t ype and how he probably intends to use the scroll's contents for revenge. Iruka pulls the giant shuriken out of his back and defends Naruto as a good natured ki d. 35) Mizuki decides that killing Naruto and getting the scroll is more important than finishing Iruka and leaves. Iruka will have none of that. Meanwhile, back i n Konoha the ninja want to find Naruto before he can release the power of the Ni ne Tails and kill him (this group includes a possible first appeareance of Chouz a Akimichi, father of Chouji). 36) Sarutobi locates Naruto using his crystal ball. Somehow, he knows that Mizuk i has revealed to Naruto the "truth" about the fox. Since Naruto has the Scroll of Sealing, Sarutobi is worried about the one in a million chance of Naruto mana ging to break the seal and transforming into the Nine Tails. 37) Iruka finds Naruto, tells him to hand over the scroll and warns him about Mi zuki being after him. Naruto replies attacking Iruka mid-leap. 38) Iruka crashes violently, while Naruto lands under his own power. However, he suddenly collapses against a tree which makes Iruka go "huh?". 39) "Iruka" cancels his transformation and reveals himself to be Mizuki who asks how Naruto knew that he wasn't Iruka. "Naruto" in turn reveals himself to be a transformed Iruka. -Interesting that we have a use of transformation that doesn't break after a mod erately strong physical attack (Iruka/Naruto punching Mizuki/Iruka out of the sk y). From what I remember, most portrayals of the Transformation Technique say th at it shares the weakness of the Shadow Clones.

Mizuki asks Iruka why he is that adamant about not letting him get the scroll, s eeing that the alternative is the Nine Tailed Fox keeping it and using its power to do horrible, horrible things. Iruka replies that yes, the Nine Tailed Fox would totally do that. However, he p oints that it is Naruto, rather than the Fox, who has the Scroll and that Naruto is one of his cherished students.

Naruto who happens to be hiding behind a nearby tree, hears the whole thing and starts crying. Meanwhile, Mizuki has apparently changed his mind about leaving I ruka for later and prepares to kill him with his stupid giant shuriken. Out of nowhere, NARUTO TO THE RESCUE! with a mighty kick that sends Mizuki rolli ng a few meters. Iruka tells Naruto to leg it and Mizuki starts ranting about ho w he is gonna one-shot Naruto, but Naruto says that he is gonna beat up Mizuki f or hurting Iruka-sensei and uses the Mass Shadow Clone Technique for the first t ime.

Mizuki shits bricks, Iruka stares in open-mouthed astonishment and then the Naru tos zerg-rush Mizuki and beat the crap outta him. -Iruka provides exposition about the difference between shadow clones (solid and "real") and normal clones (mere illusions). He also comments that Naruto made o ver a thousand clones. After the deed is done, Iruka tells Naruto to get close to him, because he wants to give him something. Meanwhile, back in Konoha the ninja are freaked about no one finding Naruto, until the Hokage shows up and tells him not to worry about the matter, since Naruto will be back soon.

In the forest, we see that Iruka gave Naruto his own headband and congratulates him for graduating. He suggests that they go to the ramen place to celebrate (hi s treat) and Naruto tackle hugs him. Timeline information 12 years BSS (Before Start of Series) - Nine Tailed Fox sealed, Iruka orphaned. Commentary: In the whole, Naruto chapter 1 is a seriously good origin story for our main character. We get a good, hard look at the personality of the early Nar uto, both in his (at this point massive) failings and his potential for heroic g reatness. And we don't get side-tracked with other characters, since this extralong chapter only has as real characters Naruto, Iruka, the Hokage and Mizuki (e xcluding for bit parts such as Generic Ninja #43 and Hateful Villager #22). In t he whole, a good beginning.
