Facts ("The students will know") Slaves fought for their lives in order to escape Most of the white people who helped escaped slaves were Quakers Although white people helped in certain ways, their force played more of a minor role in the movement as a whole Whites were legally obligated to turn in escaped slaves, which made helping them altogether too risky Freedom movements require cooperation among the members fighting for their freedom Change often only occurs after decades of fighting for it Skills ("The students will be able to") Analyze data from a graphic representation Determine the people primarily involved in the Freedom Movement Compare & contrast different movements characterized as Freedom Movements Determine if the UR as FM was successful Create a list of the factors making the UR a successful FM, or not Utilize data to create a timeline

Problems to pose ("Guiding questions" or "unit questions") What would have happened to slaves if they simply waited for others to act on their behalf? What percentage of people involved in the movement (that we know of) had never been slaves themselves? Why do groups of people want to obtain their freedom? What do all freedom movements or resistance movements seem to have in common? Is resistance the same thing as the thirst for freedom? How can we make the world such a place that no one has to fight for their rights because everyone already has them?
