Right Twist (RT): K2tog, but do not slip sts from left needle; insert right needle tip

between 2 sts just worked and knit the rst st again; slip both sts off needle.
Left Twist (LT): Knit the second st on left needle through the back loop, but do not

slip sts from left needle; knit the rst st on left needle; slip both sts off needle. CUFF CO 96 sts. Divide sts on 4 needles as foll: 32 sts on Needle 1, 32 sts on Needle 2, and 16 sts each on Needles 3 and 4. Place marker (pm) and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts; rnd begins on the side of the leg and not at center back. Next rnd: K1, [p2, k2] 16 times, p1, [k1, p2] 2 times, k3, [p2, k2] 2 times, p2, k3, [p2, k1] 2 times, p1, k1. Work 13 more rnds in established rib (knit the knits and purl the purls as they appear) 14 rnds total completed; rib measures about 114" from CO. Next rnd: Work first 64 sts (Needles 1 and 2) in patt from Twisted Rib chart (see page 3), then work last 32 sts (Needles 3 and 4 in patt from Drunken Cable chart (see page 3). Cont in established patts until Rnd 92 of Twisted Rib has been completed, ending with Rnd 12 of Drunken Cable patt64 sts rem; 16 sts each needle. Cont Drunken Cable patt on last 32 sts, working first 32 sts in rib with right and left twists every other rnd as established, until Rnds 140 of Drunken Cable have been worked a total of 4 times160 rnds total in Drunken Cable patt; piece measures about 1314" from CO. Work 1 more rnd to end with Rnd 1 of Drunken Cable and having just finished a non-twisted rnd of twisted rib. HEEL FLAP Row 1: (RS) Work the rst 32 sts of rnd onto a single needle for heel as foll: Sl 1 st pwise, [RT, p2, LT, p2] 3 times, RT, p2, LT, p1, turn work so WS is facing. Heel ap is worked on these 32 sts; rem 32 sts in cable patt are worked later for instep.

These beautiful knee-highs feature a cable pattern that weaves gently back and forth like a drunken sailor wandering back to his ship. The pattern is an adaptation of the Slack Line or Drunken-Sailor Cable pattern from Barbara Walkers A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns (Schoolhouse Press, 1998), which cleverly uses decreases and increases to tilt the cable. Finished Size 7" foot circumference and 812" long from back of heel to tip of toe; 9" calf circumference unstretched (will stretch to a maximum of 1112"); 1312" long from top of cuff to beg of heel ap, and 9" long from tip of toe to back of heel. Socks shown t womens U.S. shoe sizes 6 to 7; instructions for adjusting foot length are given in the pattern. Yarn Lornas Laces Shepherd Sock (80% superwash wool, 20% nylon; 215 yd [196 yd]/56 g): #2ns manzanita (medium plum), 3 skeins. Yarn amount is sufcient for foot lengths up to 10"; for larger sizes, purchase an extra skein. Needles Size 1 (2.5 mm): set of 5 doublepointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge. Notions Cable needle (cn); tapestry needle. Gauge 18 sts and 2612 rnds = 2" in St st worked in the rnd; 32 sts of cable patt from chart measure 312" wide.

Kitchener Stitch Ssk Decrease Slip two stitches knitwise one at a time (Figure 1). Insert point of left needle into front of two slipped stitches and knit them together through back loops with right needle (Figure 2). Step 1: Bring threaded needle through front stitch as if to purl and leave stitch on needle. Step 2: Bring threaded needle through back stitch as if to knit and leave stitch on needle. Step 3: Bring threaded needle through same front stitch as if to knit and slip this stitch off needle. Bring threaded needle through next front stitch as if to purl and leave stitch on needle. Step 4: Bring threaded needle through rst back stitch as if to purl (as illustrated), slip this stitch off, bring needle through next back stitch as if to knit, leave this stitch on needle. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until no stitches remain on needles.
