Installation of Oracle9i Database Release 2 on MS

Windows

Here is the Guide of how to install 9i on your PC. Please keep in mind that in order to
install Oracle 9i. You must have 1) at least Pentium IV with 800 MHz; 2) at least 512 Mb
RAM; 3) at least 10 Gb extra free space. The following is the walk through-on my
Windows XP Professional. It should also work on your Windows XP Home edition or
Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 Sever.

Note: If your PC has low memory (64 MB RAM) and small hard drive size (e.g. less than
10 gb), you should install Oracle 8i instead. For information about how to install Oracle
8i, read the Guide to install Personal Oracle 8i.

STEP 1:
Download the Oracle9i
Go to the website at http://technet.oracle.com/software/content.html. Scroll down to the
bottom to see Archived Products, and go to "Oracle9i Database". Choose the
windows platform under Oracle9i Release 2 (9.2.0.1). When you download the 9i,
there should be three files at (You have to be an OTN member to download the software.
The OTN membership is also free.)

92010NT_Disk1.zip (612,802,971 bytes)

92010NT_Disk2.zip (537,604,934 bytes)
92010NT_Disk3.zip (254,458,106 bytes)

Directions

1. Before downloading, please review the product certification information for this
product.
2. Verify that the filesizes listed on this page match the downloaded files on your local
disk (you need to have ~ 10 gb hard disk free space).
3. Create directories Disk1, Disk2 and Disk3. (Note: No single space between Disk
and 1, or 2 or 3)
4. cd to Disk1 and unzip the 92010NT_Disk1.zip here.
5. repeat the above step for Disk2 and Disk3.
6. After unzipping all the 3 disks in their respective directories, cd to Disk1 and run
setup.exe to start the installer.

STEP 2:
The Oracle Universal Installer starts and it guide you through the installation process.
The following welcome window is what you will see:
Click the Next button in the lower right portion of the window to begin the installation
process.
NOTE: Your computer should not have any other Oracle products previously installed. If
it does, you should deinstall the existing Oracle product. To do this, click the
aforementioned Install/Deinstall Products button and follow the prompts for
deinstallation. A window will appear, prompting you to select the software to be
deinstalled. Select the appropriate software, and click the Next button to begin the
deinstallation of the software. When this process is complete, proceed with installation.

STEP 3:
You'd better change the Name and Path of the Oracle Home if you have some other
existing Oracle softwares (e.g. Forms Developer or Oracle 8i). Putting all different Oracle
in the same Home and Path will probably misconfigure your Oracle installation. If this is
the first Oracle software you install, just take the default. Now, click the Next button in
the lower right portion of the window to continue.

STEP 4:
A window listing the products available for installation will appear. Verify that the option
to install Oracle9i Database 9.2.0.1.0 is selected and click the Next button in the lower
right portion of the window.

STEP 5:
The Oracle Universal Installer will display a window allowing the user to select the
desired edition of Oracle9i Database to be installed. The editions displayed will vary
based upon the operating system detected by the Oracle Universal Installer. Verify that
the Personal Edition is selected and click the Next button in the lower right portion of the
window to continue the installation process. If you don't care about the hard disk space
(which most people do, check the option Enterprise Edtion (2.86GB).

STEP 6:
A window will be displayed based upon the type of installation selected. The window
contains various types of database configuration that can be used based upon the purpose
of the database (i.e., the type of data it will contain).check the General Purpose. Click the
Next button in the lower right portion of the window to continue.

STEP 7:
Take the default port of 2030 for the Oracle MTS Recovery Service. Click the Next
button in the lower right portion of the screen.

STEP 8:
The installer prompts for a name to be assigned to the database that will be created during
the installation process. The name should be entered into the Global Database Name
textbox in the upper portion of the window. The word "zack" is the name I use for my
Global Database Name (you can choose your own preferred one). It will also be used as
the SID for the database and will appear in the second textbox in the lower portion of the
window. Please note, the domain name "ikegz" is actually my PC name. Yours might be
different. You can get your PC name by right clicking your My Compurter icon on your
desktop -> Properties. After the Global Database Name has been entered and verified,
click the Next button in the lower right portion of the window.

STEP 9:
The Oracle Universal Installer will prompt for the location to store the files for the actual
database to be created. A default location will be displayed in the textbox based upon the
location of program files previously entered in Step 3. If the default location is
acceptable, click the Next button in the lower right portion of the window to continue.
Otherwise, enter a different location before continuing the installation process.

STEP 10:
The Oracle Universal Installer next prompts for the correct character set to be used for
the database. This option should only be changed if the database will contain data that
requires multiple bytes to represent a character (i.e., Chinese). Otherwise, the default
character set should be selected. Click the Next button in the lower portion of the window
to continue the installation process.

STEP 11:
A summary of the products and settings will be displayed. Click the Install button in the
lower right portion of the window to begin the actual installation of the Oracle9i
Database software.

STEP 12:
A window will appear that displays the status of the installation process. The installation
of the Oracle9i Database software and creation of the database should take about 30 min
depending upon the processing speed of the computer. During the installation process, the
Oracle Universal Installer will prompt for the correct location of the installation files.
During the installation process, the Database Configuration Assistant will be activated to
create the database named in Step 7. The checklist in the upper right portion of the
window will display the stage of the database creation process.

STEP 13:
During the database creation process, the Database Configuration Assistant will prompt
for the passwords to be assigned to the SYS and SYSTEM accounts. These are higher-
level accounts with special privileges. With Oracle9i Release 2, these passwords can no
longer be assigned to their respective accounts. After entering passwords for these
accounts, make certain to record the passwords since access to these accounts may
be needed later to assign privileges or to perform certain tasks in Oracle DBA
courses. If you forget the passwords for SYS and SYSTEM, then in DBA classes,
you will have to reinstall Oracle 9i. The default user account SCOTT with the default
password of “tiger” can be used to perform basic tasks in the Oracle9i Database. Once the
SYS and SYSTEM passwords have been entered in the respective textboxes, click the
OK button at the bottom of the window.

After clicking the OK button, a list of configuration tools being installed by the Oracle
Universal Installer will be displayed.
STEP 14:
Upon completion of the installation and database creation processes, an End of
Installation window will appear. At the top of the window, the Oracle Universal Installer
will indicate whether or not the installation process was successful. To exit, click the Exit
button in the lower left portion of the window. When the dialog box appears to confirm
the Exit, click Yes.
