CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION The objective of this research, that is to say, to find out the ability

of the second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Sragi Pekalongan in the academic year 2006/2007 will be found in this chapter. After making a lot of preparations, such copying the question and answer sheets for every student and doing the test, the writer finally had the result. The result will be analyze and have research findings. Afterwards, the research findings will be discussed. A. The Test Result All of students scores will be listed in the table of the test result. The above table contains a frequency distribution showing the number of students who obtained each mark awarded. The stroke on the left of the numbers (e.g. ///) are called tallies and are included simply to illustrate the method of counting frequency of scores. Some marks are distributed more frequently than others; other marks are less distributed. Tally and frequency show this very clearly. 2. Measures of Central Tendency The formula of central tendency is applied to table of central tendency to find the mean score. Table of Central Tendency

As mentioned before that the symbol x is used to denote score, N number of testees, and m is the mean. Note that x = 2560 is the total number of the total number items which the group of 40 students got right between them. It is divided by N, as shown by the formula, we get the average. We might say that there is pretty close correspondence if we refer to the median based on the table of frequency distribution, that is to say, (for even number of testees as in this thesis) the score half-way between the lowest score in the top half (i.e. 80) and the highest score in the bottom half (i.e. 60) is 70 ([80 + 60]/2). If we change the score from 10 for each number to 1, it would be 7, and the mean would be 6.4. Heaton (1979: 169) said that such a close correspondence was not always common and has occurred in this case because the scores tend to cluster symmetrically around a central point. 3. d2 N 7587 40 189.87

s.d. = 13.78 The deviation of the mean here is a pretty narrow spread. If we use the change score, then the mean is 6.4 and the deviation is 1.38. This kind of deviation, according to Heaton (idem), if intended to measure students capability of carrying out certain tasks in the target language, will be quite satisfactory. From the three tables above, we find that the highest distribution of score is 60 and followed by 80. Hence, it is reasonable if we get the median 70 or 7 with quite satisfactory standard deviation of mean, i.e. 1.38. The findings, we may conclude, is quite satisfactory as well, since students can carry out their task in the target language with good results. To have better picture of their achievement, there is no mistake if the scores the students got put into the table of achievement below. From the above table of achievement, we might say that the result of the test is pretty significant, quite satisfactory, or fair. There are 21 out of 40 students who achieve fair. It is 52.5% of 40 students. C. Discussion Looking back at the findings, we find that the general result of the test, based on the table of achievement is fair. However, we might expect high that second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Sragi may make further progress, because there are students with good and better potentials. The distribution of the scores pushes this expectation. With 9 students getting 80, there are actually 30% students with 80. There are also 7 students with 70, or 17.5%. In addition, there are still 2 students with 90 and 1 with 100. If we might add up all the students, there are 19 students altogether. This number can be a kind of motivator for students with lower scores. Finally, as mentioned by Heaton, pictures are more appropriate for the elementary stages of learning English. This statement can be a sort of springboard for these elementary stages of learning English to reach the best achievement, not only in the ability to identify..., but also in other skills that must be commanded as the conditions for being competent in English. Students of elementary stages or levels are usually easier to be taught and guided. Like small children, they learn faster, even much faster than adults. Students are also fond of having competitions, secretly or openly, with their peers. That is why, the top or higher

27

scorers can be their fair rivals or competitors too, besides motivators, for the better achievement.
