United Nations (UN)


1. a) The U.N. was founded in 1945 with its Headquarters in New York. The Charter of the United Nations was signed on the 26 th of June 1945 by representatives of 51 Nations at the San Francisco Conference. The aims and purposes of the U.U. are:1. To maintain peace and security in the world 2. to develop friendly relations among nations 3. To work together to remove poverty, disease and illiteracy in the world, and to encourage respect for each others rights and freedom. 4. To be centre for helping nations to achieve these goals. b) The official languages of the U.N. are: English, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and Spanish (The working languages are English and French only.) c) The date of birth of the United Nations is 24 th October 1945 and every year this day is celebrated as U.N. Day. d) The first Secretary General of the United Nations was Mr. Trygve Lie. He belonged to Norway. c) The Flag of the U.N. is White U.N. emblem (two bent olive branches open at the top, and in between them is the world map) on a light blue back ground.

The present membership of U.N.O. after inclusion of Tuvalu in 2000 is 189. The following is the list of member countries.
