FAILURE ANALYSIS

The WEIDMANN failure analysis is a detailed review of the transformer internal components and/or remains of the failed transformer in association with a review of the original design parameters. Failure analysis coordinates both WEIDMANN expertise and laboratory analysis capability. The typical failure analysis usually identies the primary failure path within the transformer. This failure path is then analyzed using a nite element model to determine the actual stresses encountered in the transformer winding and insulation system. From the nite element analysis and stress determination we can determine whether or not areas of the insulation system experienced overstress or some outside component or agency initiated the failure. In addition to the nite element analysis, samples are typically removed from the failed transformer in and around the area of the failure. These samples are analyzed in WEIDMANNs laboratory for moisture content, contamination, type of discharge path, and other pertinent type of analysis. The value of the detailed failure analysis report is to describe the type of failure that occurred and the stresses encountered in the transformer at the area of the failure. In addition, the results of analytical tests determine whether or not high moisture content or outside contamination contributed to the failure of the power transformer. A detailed report on the cause of the failure is supplied to the repair company and/or end user of the transformer. D. C. dielectric tests - up to 200 kV DC including polarity reversal.
