Unit 1. Introduction

Topics Definition History: Origin and Development Theories: Motivational, learning, cognitive, decision making, interdependence, socio cultural, evolutionary and mid range theories. Activity: Screening of documentary on history of social psychology The methodology would include lectures followed by mini class activities and discussions. Perceiving persons: Attribution logic, Integration, confirmation bias. Activity: Screening of videos on Attribution bias. The methodology would include lectures, class discussions and use of popular media to understand the concepts. 3. Processes of Socialization: Positive Social Relations Prosocial Behaviour: origin, helpinginfluences (personal and interpersonal and situational) receiving help. Interpersonal attraction and affiliation: Characteristics of individual, others and situational influences. Activity: Screening of videos on prosocial behavior, bystander effect and influences on attraction. The methodology includes lectures, class discussions and power point presentations. Perceiving Groups: Stereotypes, prejudicesindividual differences and reducing prejudice) Aggression: Origin, influences (social and situational), forms, prevention and control. Activity: Discussion of various tropes found in popular media which have their bases in stereotypes through a screening of Anita Sarkeesians videos. Activity on segregation. Attitudes: formation, attitude and behavior, attitude change. Continuous Internal Assessment: CIA1 (50 marks): Mid semester exam. Units I and II and Pro-social Behaviour from Unit III.

CIA 2 (20 marks): Development of Self Concept: Students have to trace the development of self concept through the different processes. They have to mention events that may have had an impact on the development of their self concept. Creativity is encouraged. Assignments will be graded on the description of each process in the development of self concept, and linking of the theoretical concept with the narrative. Last date of Submission: December 3, 2012 CIA 3 (20 marks): Students to work in groups and take any concept in social psychology. They will then make a 3 min video to explain the concept. The assignment will be graded on clarity of the concept and clarity in its depiction and creativity in the explanation. Last Date of Submission: 4 February 2013 Rules and Regulations

Students who disrupt the class or its learning activities will not be allowed to sit in the class. Disruptive behaviors include but are not limited to the following: sleeping, habitual late coming, eating during class hours, interrupting others, talking out of turn, inappropriate behavior during group discussion and verbal behavior that is disrespectful of other students or the instructor. Any changes in the Course plan will be directly communicated in class or to the class representatives.
