We encourage you to read this User Manual thoroughly - to ensure that you get the best possible performance from your Z800 3DVisor in complete comfort and safety. Now you can play virtually inside your games, personally immersed in the action, or surround yourself with the visual data you need, without the limits of traditional displays, just about anywhere, and all in complete privacy. You will have unsurpassed PC image portability for your laptop. Your Z800 3DVisor can greatly increase your laptop battery life by letting you turnoff your laptop screen when viewing. You can also extend your Windows desktop to dual screens with most laptops, and view or create designs in a virtual 3D world. You will nd your Z800 3DVisor is lightweight and compact for a comfortable, yet awesome experience in viewing DVD movies from your computer, getting into the game, or accessing data in a borderless, big screen environment. But dont let the compact, lightweight package fool you. Your Z800 3DVisor is a sophisticated, high-performance instrument, incorporating advanced low-power OLED microdisplays, custom-designed optics, and a cutting-edge head tracker, all of which were previously available only in high-end military and industrial products. Your Z800 3DVisor is portable, with a fold-up design that lets you take it anywhere -- to the ofce, on a business trip, or just down the street to a friends house. The reality of virtual imaging is just that the big screen and 3D stereovision are ready whenever and wherever you turn on your PC.

1.1 Viewing in 3D or 2D

Games take on a whole new dimension (literally and guratively) with the Z800 3DVisor. Characters will jump out at you. Pathways you explore will challenge and thrill you as you move through three-dimensional space. Viewing 3D stereovision with your Z800 3DVisor requires a graphics card and game software that support frame sequential 3D viewing, such as NVIDIA graphics cards and games that are specially created to include two perspectives in frame sequential order. All games and other software on your computer will be viewable on your Z800 3DVisor in 2D, just like your regular monitor, but with a big difference. Screens and images on your Z800 3DVisor will be the equivalent size of a 105 inch movie screen viewed at 12 feet. Viewing in true three-dimensional spaces requires each eye to see an object from different perspectives at the same time. Stereovision means that two images are seen simultaneously one image by each eye. For example, try this exercise: place your nger at arms length at eye level and close your right eye. This will give you one perspective. Now open your right eye and close your left. Your nger appears to jump approximately an inch. While your nger does not actually move, you are viewing it from a new perspective. Our brain joins these two perspectives to give us depth perception. Your Z800 3DVisor accomplishes this same 3D effect with an advanced (stereovision) technique. The Z800 3DVisor has two screens, one for each eye, so each eye can view a different perspective at the same time. Software or video that take advantage of this capability by rapidly alternating images to each screen a process called frame sequential - will deliver this stereovision 3D effect.

1.2 Stereovision

1.2 Stereovision (cont.)

The Z800 3DVisor uses eMagin Corporation organic light emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays for the two display screens that provide the virtual images in front of each eye. Only eMagin OLED displays provide brilliant, rich colors in full 3D with no icker and no screen smear. The patented OLED-on-silicon technology enhances the inherently fast refresh rates of OLED materials with on-chip signal processing and data buffering at each pixel site. This enables each pixel to continuously emit only the colors and brightness they are programmed to show. Flickering due to shuttering from the left eye to the right eye is avoided with the Z800 3DVisors image data buffered under every pixel of each display.

1.3 360-Degree Head Tracking

To further enhance your game experience, your Z800 3DVisor includes a sophisticated head-tracking device that can enhance the virtual reality experience of your computer games. The tracker emulates the look around formerly accomplished by mouse movements, so it is useful with a large number of games that have such capability.

Turn your head left or right, up or down and the game moves with you. You can look around 360 degrees on any axis from the viewpoint of your character inside the game. The advanced design head tracker uses highspeed micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscopes and accelerometers (one of each for X,Y and Z dimension) to sense the movement of your head, and relays the information to the game program. The Z800 3DVisor is easily congured with the mouse movement functions in the Microsoft Windows environment and in most games, giving you the ability to look right and left and up and down, according to the capabilities of the software. The 3D stereovision of the Z800 3DVisor, with head tracker and the right games, can put you virtually into the game. eMagins advanced fast refresh OLED 3D microdisplays and head tracker combine to make the Z800 3DVisor capable of seamless, icker-free motion that can be faster than the game itself. Speed and sensitivity of motion can be adjusted to your preference and comfort.

17

3.1 Adjusting the Visor Headset (cont.)

Use the double hinge feature of the Eyepiece Assembly to adjust for the distance between your eye and the Visor and to tilt in or out for proper focus. The Eyepiece Assembly should be moved as close to the eyes as is comfortable to improve the image quality and immersive experience. For best results, fold the Eyepiece Assembly into its most compressed position as in the previous photo before you put on the Visor. If you need to tilt out the assembly to t over glasses or during use, be sure to fold the eyepiece module all the way back to its innermost position, grab the module as in Figure 1 above, dont hesitate to push until hinge folds in all the way.

IPD Adjustment

The optics in each Eyepiece Assembly can be moved left and right so that you may adjust for the distance between your eyes. This is called inter-pupillary distance or IPD. Each Eyepiece Assembly will need to be adjusted separately for clear viewing.

IPD Adjustment The Eyepiece Assembly has an IPD adjustment feature that allows you align the position of each Eyepiece Module separately. For optimal viewing of 3D images, it is important to adjust each Eyepiece Module separately.

Return to Table of Contents

18

3.1 Adjusting the Visor Headset (cont.)

Adjust the IPD by grabbing each Eyepiece Module between the thumb and forenger, move each eyepiece to the right or left. Note:The Eyepiece Modules are on a toothed ratchet and will snap into each adjustment location. For best results, push or pull equally with both ngers and thumbs keeping the Eyepiece Modules straight. If you twist the modules, they may not snap to the next in or out position. Make the adjustment for each eye. Close one eye and focus the opposite eye on the image. Re-adjust each Eyepiece Module separately until each image is sharply focused. If the modules are adjusted correctly, you should not see a double image and the entire screen should be in focus. Best results are typically obtained when each eyepiece is an equal distance from the center. After adjusting, look at the Z800 3DVisor to determine if this is correct. If not, readjust as needed.

Adjusting the Earbud Headphones

The earbuds are conveniently attached to the headset. Each earbud ts comfortably into the ear and may be removed with ease. You may use other earbuds or other audio headsets that use mini-stereo jacks. You can switch earbud at the headset by pulling the earbuds out by the connector and plugging in alternative earbuds. You may also connect alternate audio headsets to your PC and not use the eMagin earbuds.

Earbud Headphones

Speak into the built-in noise-cancelling microphone by simply talking normally while on line to communication with others, while you play the game. No adjustment is typically necessary, other than normal microphone setup in your computers sound or operating system software. NOTE: The microphone is built into the middle of the eyepiece assembly.

3.6 Give Yourself a Rest

As with any monitor, you should take frequent breaks (every hour or so) to prevent eye strain. The immersive effect of your Z800 3DVisor can produce intense concentration and reduced blinking, leading to dryness of the eyes and other symptoms of eye strain. It may be helpful to blink more often.

3.7 Standby and Power Down

Standby mode is activated whenever the Z800 3DVisor senses lack of head movement for longer than ten minutes. Conversely, picking up the Visor up to put it on your head is enough to trigger the advanced OLED microdisplays instant-on image. The automatic standby mode is designed to minimize energy consumption and also protects the displays in your Z800 3DVisor from static image retention, similar to the function of a screen saver on a CRT or Plasma screen. NOTE:The Z800 3DVisor must be plugged into the USB port on your computer and the Z800 3DVisor Software Utility must be running at all times (even if you disable the motion sensor) for the Standby mode to function correctly. If you use the optional AC power adapter, the timeout will default to 150 minutes and must be resest by pushing any button on the Z800 3DViser Controller Box.

Helpful Hints

When watching a DVD or movie le on your PC, you should always maximize the media player window to ll the entire screen To avoid mouse cursor movements that will prevent your DVD software from running on full screen mode deactivate the Motion Sensor. (See Section 3.4 Using the Z800 3DVisor Software.)

Standby Mode with AC Power Supply

The optional AC power supply which supplies 5V dc can be used when the Z800 3DVisor is connected to a video device other than a PC computer system with USB. When connected to this external power supply and alternate compatible video source, the standby mode will be activated automatically after 150 minutes. Pressing any button on the Z800 3DVisor Controller will waken the system from standby mode.

Power Down

Power down the Z800 3DVisor by pressing the power button or unplugging the USB cable on the Controller. With virtually no warm-up time required, the OLED microdisplays will come on instantly any time you turn on the Z800 3DVisor. NOTE: Make certain to unplug the USB cable to the Z800 3DVisor when not in use, particularly if you are in an airplane or other moving vehicle. Vehicle motion, bumps or jolts are enough to prevent the display system from going into, or staying in, standby mode.

Care and Handling

The Z800 3DVisor has been designed with special optic features that will enhance your enjoyment of playing 3D games. Taking proper care of the visor is important for optimal functioning of the equipment. If you experience problems with using your Z800 3DVisor, the Troubleshooting section of this user guide may answer many of your questions. For additional questions that are not addressed in the user guide please contact eMagin Technical Support.

4.1 Storing and Cleaning

Your Z800 3DVisor may be safely stored in the included carrying case. The case will protect your Z800 3DVisor from sand and dust, and it is specially designed to protect your Visor from shock and scratches during transportation. The Z800 3DVisor should be kept in a clean and dry location out of direct sunlight. Store your Z800 3DVisor so that it is protected from extremes of heat, cold, or humidity. Avoid dirty or sandy environments as these can lead to scratching of optics and damage to the Z800 3DVisor mechanical adjustments. Avoid exposure to liquids. If your Z800 3DVisor does get wet, dry thoroughly before using. Use the eMagin lens cleaning cloth included with your Z800 3DVisor Display, or a lint-free cloth when cleaning your Visor. Paper towels or household cloths may scratch or damage the lenses. Cleaning solutions should not be used to clean your visor. Do not use Isopropyl alcohol or solutions containing alcohol to clean the lenses or plastic parts on your visor. Use only clean dry cloths as noted above. Use a camera pressure canister to occasionally blow out dirt. Extra eMagin lens cleaning cloths can be ordered at www.3dvisor.com. Lint free cloths can also be purchased at most camera supply stores.

4.2 Protecting and Maintaining Image Quality

Always turn off your Z800 3DVisor if you will be away from your computer for ten minutes or longer. Like CRT monitors and plasma screens the microdisplays in your Z800 3DVisor should be protected from retention of static images (also referred to as burn-in of static images). The Z800 3DVisor has an automatic standby mode that will turn off the display image if Motion Sensor data is not received from the head tracker for more than 10 minutes (150 minutes when using optional external power supply). This automatic shutoff will not occur if the visor is moving (such as in a car, airplane or train). You should manually turn off the Z800 3DVisor or unplug the USB connector when the visor is idle in a moving vehicle. Static image retention can be corrected or reduced by creating an all-white screen (all pixels on) or an opposite pattern of brightness, and displaying this image on your Z800 3DVisor until the image is no longer noticeable. This procedure should be done as infrequently as possible as it will affect the overall lifetime of the display. eMagin is not responsible for any customer-induced damage, including image retention. Avoid excessive use of xed/immobile patterns on the display. NOTE: Make certain to power down the Z800 3DVisor when not in use, particularly if you are in an airplane or other moving vehicle. Vehicle motion, bumps or jolts are enough to prevent the display system from going into, or staying in, standby mode.
