Vision Statement
 Establishing The full fledged Gandhian Studies
Department in this terrorism torn State of
Jammu and Kashmir.
 Establishing a University of Gandhian Studies in
Jammu Region.
 Expanding the horizon of Gandhian character
building, moral values, corporate, social and
political ethics in society.
 Re-establishing faith and general belief in the efficacy
of Gandhian nonviolence, truth, self-sufficiency and
practical-idealism among youth and people of Jammu
and Kashmir through social and academic sense of
responsibility, accountability and efficiency of the
Indian University System.
 Global networking of Gandhian Institutions.

Objectives
 Application of Gandhian perspective in every
area of studies including the fields of
technology and nuclear science.
 Applying the Gandhian principle of “Learning and
earning” together.
 Providing more rightful opportunities and
avenues to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir
in the direction of peace, conflict resolution
and self-reliance.
 Dismantling various myths and ages old rumours in
peoples’ mind anent Gandhi.
 Propagating Gandhian vision of a modern
democratic India and a world federation of
nations.

Special Recognition of Gandhian Centre
 The UGC, on the recommendation of the MHRD,
after due consideration, extended the term of
Gandhian Centre, JU upto 2012 in 2006.
 The Government of J&K and Council of University
of Jammu sanctioned in March 2008 a position of
an Assistant Director -- in the grade of an
Associate Professor -- in favour of the Gandhian
Centre for running a Certificate Course and P.G.
Diploma.
 Academic Council of University of Jammu approved
the launching of the P.G. Diploma Course at
Gandhian Centre in February 2008.
 Consultancy Services of Gandhian Centre utilised
by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Gandhi
Smriti and Darshan Samiti, New Delhi and Gandhi
Peace Project, Department of Biology, McMaster
University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Syllabus Recently Formulated
 Syllabus for P.G. Diploma in Gandhian
Philosophy and Peace Studies formulated and
approved by the Academic Council in principle
only recently.

 Other syllabi for Certificate Course and M.A. in


Gandhian Studies are being formulated.

 M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses and research will duly


start the moment a permanent Gandhian Studies
Department with required faculty, teaching and
non-teaching staff is established in the XI Plan
perspectives.

Number of Aspirants for Admission
 There are about 1800 aspirants amongst villages
around Jammu, urban civil society, journalists,
senior Army Officers, Corporate Leaders, Displaced
Persons and several others aspiring for becoming
students at Certificate, P.G. Diploma, M.A., M.Phil.
And Ph.D. Programmes of the Gandhian Centre at
Jammu University.

 These aspirations were expressed during Gandhian


Centre’s Survey of Border Areas; Action Research
and Interactive Sessions with Displaced Persons in
remote areas; Fieldwork visits to villages; Peace
Marches and other such programmes where youth
of Jammu participated in ever increasing numbers.

7. Other Peace Activities such as Peace Marches, Environment
Protection Programme, Signature Campaigns, Gandhi
Theatre (College Level), Tree Plantation, Debates, Quizzes,
Bapu Bhajan Sandhyas, Gandhi Mobile Library to Villages,
Spinning Wheel Training Session, Vocational Training in
establishing local intra-institutional FM Radio Station,

8. Director, Gandhian Centre, JU was invited as a Visiting
Professor to BHU, Calcutta University, Madras University

12. Twelve Days Field Survey and multi-level interaction programme
organised for teachers, researchers, journalists and UG/PG
students from Boston University and Tuft University, United States
to understand challenges faced by the displaced persons in J&K.
13. As such, more than a hundred action research programmes,
training sessions, lectures and conferences / workshops /
seminars etcetera organised from 2005 to 2009.
14. Organising three days International Conference in May 2009 in
collaboration with McMaster University and Canadian Centre, JU.
15. One international Student Exchange Programme

within India organised by the Gandhian Centre.

supporting original research.

teaching staff and 06 permanent faculty and
teaching positions in view of at least five
ensuing courses of study.

 Gandhian Centre works from the room of Professor
Anurag Gangal who is also the Director of the Centre.
There is no separate room.
 No space and building provided to Gandhian Centre during last
more than four years.
 No space for Laboratory provided.
 No space for Library and Reading Room provided.

it – with fluctuating strength – from time
to time.
4. UGC -- despite due sanction letters issued --
has not sent any grants to Gandhian Centre
at Jammu University for the last three years:
2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009 despite
several reminders and visits to the concerned
officials.

 Physical Infrastructural Support:
1. Suitable Alternative Space until a New Building is
constructed

2. New Building according to requirements already sent to


the concerned officials at Jammu University for the
Eleventh Plan Proposal of the Gandhian Centre.

3. On a rough estimate, about 2,00,00,000 Cr. Rupees one


time grant is initially needed to establish the new
Gandhian Studies Department including requirement of
building, library grants and other infrastructural grants
for furniture and state-of-the-art ready IT equipped
building interiors especially for various types of training
and project work etcetera.
