Energy Tracking Tool

Introduction
Improving energy efficiency can yield both cost savings and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Setting goals and establishing an energy tracking system to measure progress towards goals is critical to achieving success. Benchmarking and tracking energy use and intensity is also fundamental to energy management. The US EPA's ENERGY STAR program has seen that companies that establish strong energy management practices and programs achieve the greatest results. The ENERGY STAR Energy Tracking Tool (ETT) provides manufacturers with a simple means for tracking their energy performance over time and progress toward goals. The tool enables users to define custom energy intensity metrics, such as MMBtu/Unit of Production. Baselining, Goal Setting, and Benchmarking

The ETT can be used to establish energy and emissions reduction goals, and to track progress toward those goals from a defined baseline. The ETT can also be used to create a production index that enables comparison of energy and emissions intensities against their baseline values or against similar facilities. The ETT does not generate ENERGY STAR energy performance ratings.

Dashboard and Reports

A portfolio-wide dashboard function provides users with a summary of performance and progress toward goals. The report function generates several different reports for analyzing data and communicating results.

Intended Users
The ETT is designed to support manufacturing companies participating in the US EPAs ENERGY STAR program that commit to measure, track, and benchmark energy performance. This tool is intended primarily for mid-size manufacturing companies that may not have the resources to invest in custom data tracking system development; however, the ETT's flexibility makes it appropriate for a broad range of organizations.

Getting Started
To use the ETT, you will need to collect energy and production data for the sites you will track. If your company has established energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals, you will need those numbers and any site-specific goal numbers. Historical data can be entered in the ETT and the tool can track up to 15 years of data. You may save and return to the tool at any time.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The ETT calculates Greenhouse Gas Emissions associated with energy use. The ETT was not designed as a comprehensive emissions inventory tool. It can be used to support conducting full inventories. Companies without existing comprehensive GHG inventorying systems should consider using the EPA's Calculator for Low Emitters offered by the Climate Leaders Program. Software Compatibility
The ETT was designed using Microsoft Excel 2003. If you are using a newer version of Microsoft Excel, some of the formatting for graphics, text on buttons, and print preferences may be altered. The ETT's functions, however, should remain unaffected.

Navigating the Tool

Proceed to Tool Use the navigation buttons (e.g. below) to proceed through the tool, and open any supporting or reference pages. If buttons do not work, your security level may be too high. To remedy in Microsoft Excel 2003: - Go to Tools menu --> Macro --> Security. - In the pop-up window, reset security level to Medium, save changes, and close the tool. - Reopen the tool, and click on "Enable Macros" when prompted.

Follow the instructions at the top of each page. You may choose to display or hide these instructions using the

Show/Hide Instructions buttons.

If you cannot see all the instructions without scrolling back and forth, you may be using a resolution that does not enable you to see a broad view. To remedy: - Go to View menu --> Zoom - Decrease the Zoom level until you can see all the instructions. These formats are observed throughout the tool to guide the user: YELLOW YELLOW boxes provide instructions and tips on using the tool. BLUE LIGHT GREEN WHITE Look for tables with BLUE headers. The blue header indicates a table where user action is potentially needed. Cells with LIGHT GREEN shading indicate cells where you may enter data, select an option from a pull-down menu, or revise default values. WHITE cells are automatically populated by the tool. They do not require user input. If an error message appears when you try to edit these cells, please click "OK" and refer to the instructions at the top of the page.
