Preparation For Start

Before starting the gas-turbine engine and driven equipment, contact maintenance personnel or use written records to verify that all maintenance items have been completed. Physically inspect the gas-turbine engine and driven equipment to verify that there are no maintenance tags attached to any equipment that indicate equipment should not be energized or started. Injury to personnel or damage to equipment may result if warning is not observed. This subsection describes the procedures to prepare the gas-turbine engine and driven equipment for a start at the unit control panel. 1. Contact maintenance personnel and verify that all maintenance items have been completed and that there are no maintenance tags attached to any equipment that indicate equipment should not be energized or started. 2. Perform unit control panel activation procedures listed Subsection 3.3.1.
3.3.1 Unit Control Panel Activation Perform the following procedures to activate the unit control panel. NOTE In the following procedures, display screen indications that highlight in (reverse video) are shown in brackets [ ]. 1. At the unit control panel, rotate OFF/LOCAL/AUXILIARY Keyswitch (YS0101) to LOCAL position. NOTE Perform the following two steps, if [Remote] is highlighted on the Operation display screen for SYSTEM CONTROL. 2. Select Operation display screen and select onscreen REMOTE CONTROL SELECTION DISABLE button. NOTE Selecting onscreen DISABLE button opens a pop-up window. 3. On the pop-up window, select onscreen OK button to disable remote control. Verify [Local] highlights on the Operation display screen for SYSTEM CONTROL. NOTE Once [Local] is highlighted, all operations that use customer-furnished remote devices cease until the onscreen REMOTE CONTROL SELECTION ENABLE button is selected. Normal stop and emergency stop pushbutton switches remain active regardless of local or remote control selection. 4. On the Operation display screen, verify [Local] is highlighted for SYSTEM CONTROL.

3. Perform unit control mode selection procedures listed Subsection 3.3.2.


3.3.2 Unit Control Mode Selection This subsection describes the procedures used to activate Automatic Ngp (Process Control) mode or Manual Ngp Control mode. AUTOMATIC NGP CONTROL (PROCESS CONTROL) MODE This subsection describes the procedure used to activate Automatic Ngp Control (Process Control) mode from the unit control panel. NOTE If Automatic Ngp Control mode is activated while Load Share Control is [ON], all units communicate Ngp setpoints (Ngp SP) with the other units that are in the same load-share group.

1. Observe the following NOTE: NOTE In the following steps, manual adjustments of Ngp setpoint are inhibited when Automatic Ngp Control mode is selected by the operator. 2. Choose one of the following methods to activate Automatic Ngp Control mode from the unit control panel: a. In the Load Setpoint Mode selector box on the Process Control display screen, select onscreen Auto button and verify [Auto] highlights in the Load Setpoint Mode selector box. b. From the unit control panel, press AUTO/MANUAL Switch/Light (YLS0156) to select Automatic Ngp Control mode. Verify AUTO Light illuminates.

4. At the unit control panel, verify LOCAL is illuminated on LOCAL/AUX Light (YLI0101), or verify [Local] is highlighted on the Operation display screen for SYSTEM CONTROL. 5. Press LAMP TEST Switch (YS0113). Verify all indicator lights illuminate. 6. Select Fuel System display screen and check fuel pressure. NOTE An alarm or shutdown will be indicated on the Alarm Summary display screen if fuel pressure is out of operating limits. 7. To acknowledge and clear any alarm or shutdown indications, press ACKNOWLEDGE Switch (YS0117) and then press RESET Switch (YS0114), or select onscreen RESET button on the Operation display screen and then select onscreen OK button on the confirmation popup window. 8. Select Alarm Summary display screen and check for alarm and shutdown indications. Correct any alarm and shutdown indications that remain. NOTE For a list of alarms and shutdowns, refer to the Software Cause and Effect Drawing that is provided in the RSLogix/9000_999/Reports folder of the Project CD-ROM. 9. Select Operation display screen and verify [Ready] is highlighted. Verify READY Light (YLI0177) illuminated. NOTE If shutdown indications have not been cleared on the Alarm Summary display screen, [Ready] will not highlight on Operation display screen and READY Light will not illuminate. All shutdown(s) must be corrected and reset before [Ready] highlights on Operation display screen and the READY Light illuminates.

3.3.4 Start Procedures


This subsection describes the procedures to start the gas-turbine engine and driven equipment at the unit control panel.

NOTE A restart may be initiated one minute after the gas-turbine engine speed drops to 15 percent. In case of a malfunction shutdown, do not attempt another restart until the cause of the malfunction has been determined and the condition has been corrected. After three attempted starts have been unsuccessful, additional troubleshooting may be required. In the following start procedures, display screen indications that highlight in (reverse video) are shown in brackets [ ]. 1. Perform prestart procedures listed in Subsection 3 .3.3. (Preparation for Start) 2. At the unit control panel, select Maintenance display screen and select onscreen FAIL TO LOAD SHUTDOWN ENABLE button. NOTE Selecting the onscreen Enable button opens a confirmation pop-up window. 3. From confirmation pop-up window, select the onscreen OK button and verify [Fail to Load Enabled] highlights. 4. Select Unit Valves display screen and select onscreen Seal System Auto button and verify Seal System [Auto] highlights. 5. On the Unit Valves display screen, select onscreen Yard Valves Auto button and verify Yard Valves [Auto] highlights. 6. Select HPC Surge Control display screen and select onscreen Anti-Surge Control Auto button and verify [Auto] highlights for Anti-Surge Control. NOTE Selecting the onscreen Auto button opens a confirmation pop-up window. 7. From confirmation pop-up window, select the onscreen OK button. 8. Select Operation display screen to monitor gas-turbine engine during start sequence. 9. To start the gas-turbine engine and driven equipment, press START Switch (YS0110), or select onscreen START button on the Operation display screen and then select onscreen OK button. The following events occur: a. STARTING Light (YLI0114) begins flashing and [Starting] highlights on Operation display screen. Enclosure vent fan is energized. Backup lube oil pump is tested for operation and pre/post pump starts prelubrication cycle. The control system begins a fuel system check. Start system is energized. b. After prelube cycle is complete, gas-turbine engine cranking begins. c. After starter has cranked gas-turbine engine to 15 percent speed, purge timer provides a preselected period of exhaust system purging via gas-turbine engine air flow. [Purge Crank] highlights on Operation display screen.

d. After purge cycle is completed, fuel is admitted into combustor chamber where it is mixed with compressed air and ignited. [Ignition] highlights on Operation display screen. Lightoff occurs within next few seconds and combustion begins. e. The gas-turbine engine continues to accelerate and gas-turbine engine temperature increases to 400F (204C). [Light Off] highlights on Operation display screen, fuel ramp is activated, and ignition is de-energized. ENGINE HOURS/START COUNTER Meter (KI0131) registers a successful start. f. Gas-turbine engine speed increases to starter dropout speed. Engine-driven lube oil pump pressure increases and pre/post lube oil pump stops. Start system is de-energized and starter clutch overruns. Gas-turbine engine speed increases to idle speed. ENGINE HOURS/START COUNTER Meter (KI0131) begins to log gas-turbine engine operating hours. STARTING Light is extinguished and [Running] highlights on Operation display screen. 10. Perform operational checkout procedures listed in Subsection 3.3.5.
3.3.5 Operational Checkout To ensure safe operation, perform the following operational checkout procedures each time the gasturbine engine and driven equipment is started. If gas-turbine engine is continuously running, perform an operational checkout daily to verify normal operation. 1. Record gas-turbine engine and driven equipment speeds, pressures, temperatures, and vibration readings for comparison with normal or designed operating values. If deviations exist, shut down gasturbine engine and driven equipment and determine cause. 2. Record seal gas differential pressure, buffer air differential pressure, suction primary seal leakage flow, discharge primary seal leakage flow, seal gas filter differential pressure, and buffer air filter differential pressure for comparison with established norms. If deviations exceed norms, shut down gas-turbine engine and driven equipment and determine cause. 3. Check for leaks from air, oil, and fuel plumbing. 4. Ensure safe operation at all times.

Observe the following NOTE: NOTE If Automatic Ngp Control (Process Control) Mode is activate, the control system adjusts Ngp to achieve or maintain the setpoint of the active process (suction pressure, discharge pressure, and/or flow, as applicable). If Manual Ngp Control Mode is activated, the control system adjusts Ngp based upon the selected Ngp setpoint source. The Ngp setpoint selector box on the Process Control display screen shows the selected Ngp setpoint source. After [Ready to Load] is highlighted on the Operation display screen, the operator can adjust Ngp. Refer to Ngp Setpoint Adjustment procedure in Subsection 3.3.6.
3.3.6 Manual Ngp Control Procedures NGP SETPOINT SOURCE SELECTION This subsection describes the procedure used to select the desired Ngp setpoint source from the unit control panel. NOTE The unit control system allows only one control panel to be active at a time. The Not External setpoint source enables the unit control system to use the active control panel's Ngp setpoint, whether from the unit control panel, the auxiliary unit control panel (if applicable), or the remote unit control panel (if

applicable). The External source enables the control system to use an external, customer-furnished, 4 to 20 milliampere input signal as an Ngp setpoint source. 1. At the unit control panel, select the Process Control display screen. 2. In the Ngp setpoint selector box on the Process Control display screen, select the onscreen Not Ext button or External button. 3. On the Process Control display screen, verify the desired Ngp setpoint source highlights in the Ngp setpoint selector box. NGP SETPOINT ADJUSTMENT This subsection describes the procedures used to manually adjust the unit control panel's Ngp setpoint. 1. At the unit control panel, select the Process Control display screen and verify [Not Ext.] is highlighted in the Ngp setpoint selector box. NOTE If [External] is highlighted in the Ngp setpoint selector box, perform NGP SETPOINT SOURCE SELECTION procedure listed in Subsection 3.3.6. 2. Choose one of the following methods to adjust the unit control panel's Ngp setpoint: a. From Local Setpoint Mode Select area of the Process Control display screen, select onscreen (Ngp) button. (1) At the unit control panel, press INCREASE Switch (YS0154) or press DECREASE Switch (YS0155) as needed to achieve desired Ngp setpoint. b. On the Process Control display screen, double-click in the Ngp entry field to the left of the Ngp setpoint selector box.

NOTE Double-clicking in the Ngp entry field opens a setpoint pop-up window. (1) In the setpoint pop-up window, enter user name, password, and desired Ngp setpoint.

Idles speed: The unit is operating at the NPT idle set point (34-52%, typical), or NGP idle set point (70-78%, typical), which ever is greater.
