Anna Achterhoff Lesson 4 Presented- 3/14/12 Turned in 3/19/13 Topic: Counting backwards from 10 1.

My objective for this lesson was at the conclusion of the lesson students will be able to correctly count backwards from ten to one without hesitation. 2. I sequenced my lesson so that we began whole group time with counting several time from one to ten. I did those so the students would see the relation of the new content I was about to teach them, counting backwards, to the knowledge they have already mastered. I then used the pointer to point to the number line above the board from left to right, from 10 to 1, I asked the students to say each number as I pointed to it together as a whole.

3. The grouping method I used was organized and well planned in order to keep each small groups time to a minimum will assessing. I tried to arrange the small groups by what I thought were the skill level of each student. I did this so higher level students that knew the content without hesitation would not have to sit in small group waiting on me to finish assessing a student that needed extra time and guidance on the content. By doing this I was able to speed up the time that assessing in small groups consumed. 4. One way I address individual needs of a student was by post- assessing them individually, not in a small group setting. I did this because in my time spent in the classroom and assessing I have noticed this student is easily distracted by his peers, which causes the assessment to not accurately represent his knowledge learned. By doing it one-on-one once I finished all the small groups gave him the opportunity to not have distractions.

5. I feel as though I managed my lesson well. There were not any major issues or problems that caused me to feel otherwise about the way I managed the lesson. If I could go back and change or add something to my presentation of the lesson it would be that I would have had the students count backwards as a class a few extra times. I would do it differently because students can never have enough practice with new content. 6. I assessed the class three separate times pertaining to this lesson. The first assessment was done individually by simply asking students to count backwards from 10 then I recorded if they would do it, and if not I wrote down what they said when they tried. My second assessment was

observed and recorded by each students participation during the teaching of the lesson while in whole group. My final assessment was completed in small groups at the conclusion of the lesson by asking students individually to count backwards from 10. I put a check if they got it right and for those few who still struggled I wrote down what they said when they tried.

7.

I incorporated more than one of the developmental realms into my lesson. One of the methods was kinesthetic learning; this was done by having the students use their hands and fingers to count down from ten placing a finger down after each number. Another method in my lesson used was cognitive thinking by asking the students to recall previously learned information, forward counting, while trying to count backwards.

8. Knowledge construction is a demission of education that was most critical to me for the teaching of this lesson. I believe this was most important because the students had to use prior information they have mastered in order to learn and implement new content. This method of construction knowledge is important for children so they realize that information tends to build onto one another; just like you must learn to walk before you can run, you must count forward before counting backwards.

9.

When I teach my next lesson I plan on again using the method of pulling sticks from a cup with students names to choose who gets to participate in the activity during whole group time. When used this strategy in this lesson there was little complain from the class about someone having multiple turns as well as having students call out Pick me!! and feeling like I was using favoritism in my selections of those to help.

10. I would rate myself as satisfactory on implementing specific content into this lesson. I rate myself this way because the students were engaged and participated well during whole group. During small groups the method used allowed for time to be conserved keeping early finishers from becoming off task.
