A laboratory eraminatiorn of the water bes been made to show the presence or absence of waste matts of human or aaimal origin. If the water is contaniaated by surface wash or sewage, then parasitic intestinal worrns, a.mebic cysts or genns of intestinal diseases, such as cause bowel complaint, diarrbea, dyse, ntery or typhoid fever, may be present ia the water, thus endangering the hedth of persons drinking the water. The terms and results a,re briefly as follows:

Testsl sSedlmenft through r'Chloddo." A deirable water has an attractive turbidity) and has no objectionable odor ot taste. Chemical results are givm in
(ppm).
Bacterlological
Tests: '{Bacterla per ml.t' indicates the number of microdrganisnas present ia 6ss rnillilitr (ml.) of water (20 drops) and the number which grew in standard auhient agar at body temperature (37'Cor98.6T). These bacteria may not be of intestinal origin and therefore may not be of sanitary importance. Occasionally the test plates are overcrowded so that no bacterial count can be obtained. In such a case the report shows "Innumsable" indicatiag more than 10,000 bacteria per ml.
"Coll-type bacterlatt 'lPresumpdve Tesbr' "Confrmatory Teststt: A water containing bacteria of intestinal origin (8. coli and A. aerogenes, also known as "coliform" bacteria), if placed in a suga,r broth (lactose), will cause fermentation and production of gas in 24 ot 48 hrs. By means of further laboratory tests the presence of these bacteri:a in 10 ml. portions is indicated by a *, their absence by a-. tbe nume, ral preceding the sign shows the num6er of portions Slviog tbat result.
Example: 2*S- indieat* that two 10 ml. portioae of the *mple did show and three portions did not show coli-t5rye bacterira present. After receipt of f.he sanple in the laboratory it requires from two to sir days to complete the sanitary
or bacteriological aualysis.
