Denver Botanic Gardens has a long tradition in Botanical Art and Illustration. The discipline was first taught in
1980 and the certificate program was established in 1990. Today, the program offers a comprehensive educa-
tion in the scientific illustration of plants and fungi and the professional instructors continue the strong tradition.
Nearly 100 courses are offered each year to students at all levels of art experience. The curriculum can lead to
a Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration, a recognition that is obtainable at only a few locations worldwide.
The program has more than 500 active students, and since 2000, 107 graduates have received the certificate.

A b o u t t he C over Art i s t
Gai Swanson is a graduate of Denver Botanic Gardens’ Botanical Art and Illustration Program. “Working as a
botanical artist lets me combine my curiosity about plant life with my love of art. In my research, I seek out the
unique characteristics of my subjects. My goal is to present botanical information in an artistic format that oth-
ers will enjoy.” For this particular illustration, Trifolium dasyphyllum, Gai studied the seed through a microscope
before drawing it in graphite on watercolor paper. She also works with colored pencils, pen and ink, watercolor,
gouache, acrylics and oils. Gai can be contacted at gis06@comcast.net.
