The MSc Company Based Dissertation (CBD) takes place during the summer and provides our MSc students with a structured scheme for applying management concepts to business practice. We link students to an organisation to research a dissertation topic agreed and supervised by a faculty member with relevant expertise. We offer this opportunity on a competitive basis. A rigorous selection process ensures that partner organisations are able to choose the very best students to undertake a CBD. Please note that it is not possible to guarantee a place to all students who might be interested. Through the Company Based Dissertation our rm was able to get in touch with new talents and integrate them in our ongoing business projects. Wladimir Kovacic, CEO, Advisory Group Zurich, Switzerland. Working on this project has fully developed my professional knowledge and provided hands-on experience in the eld of investment management. Vanessa Lei, MSc Finance and Investment Intern at Advisory Group Zurich, Switzerland. I just wanted to say how well your graduates did! If you are able to provide graduates of a similar calibre, we would be very keen to take them on for similar periods in the future. I personally agree with many of their astute observations. Matilda Urie, Wind farm Developer, E.ON Nottingham, UK Working at E.ON Retail Strategy for my dissertation has allowed me to gain professional experience in one of the most innovative industry sectors. I would recommend doing a dissertation placement to future Masters students. For the skills you develop, exposure you gain and valued output you deliver, you will not regret the decision. Rudy Menon, MSc Management Intern at E.ON Nottingham, UK I wanted to gain some insights from a company and see what it means to work in that particular business eld. The recruitment process takes about two months and includes CV screening, phone interview and a nal interview at companys headquarters. I was accepted by Toro Capital, a Swiss-based company, which started operating in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Since it was a young company, my task was to research the North American natural gas industry in terms of its fundamentals and indicators, so that the companys management could make a decision about whether or not to start trading in that area. The main advantage of a company based dissertation was that it offered me various perspectives on my future job in consultancy and trading areas, ensuring a great link with the real business environment. This course is particularly suitable for anyone seeking a career in areas such as venture capital, management consultancy, investment banking, and nancial services management. Corporate strategy is concerned with how organisations develop, grow and restructure, for example by management buy-outs. Corporate governance is closely related to strategy, it is concerned with who controls a company, the relationship between owners and managers, who takes responsibility for decisions, and executive remuneration levels. In almost every country with an active stock market, there is increasing concern over corporate governance and pressure for reform. Measures that could be taken include improving nancial disclosure and getting a better balance of power in the boardroom by separating the jobs of chair of the board and chief executive. In this programme, you will be exposed to leading experts in industry who will share insights from their own experience and help you to more effectively blend theory with practice. The course will offer interactive learning through cases, exercises, and/or the use of simulations. You will develop a deeper understanding of the various theories/frameworks that are central to the programme. The student body is diverse and this opens up the opportunity to learning from your peers. Dr Rajesh Kumar Director of MSc in Corporate Strategy and Governance Career Progression Previous graduates have entered a variety of careers such as Accountancy, Asset Management, Consulting, Investment Banking, Operations Management, Project Management, Risk and Tax. Nottingham University Business School MSc Programmes 2013-14 44 Nottingham University Business School MSc Programmes 2013-14 The Msc in Risk Management focuses on the problems that risk poses for businesses, and how risks can be managed. It is particularly appropriate for anyone interested in a career in risk management, managing risk in banks and nancial institutions, insurance, or general corporate management. Risk management has been rising up the boardroom agenda. As the implications of the global nancial crisis have spread through economies, rms have realised they need to plan for and manage potential risks. However, rms also need to recognise that managing risk may mean forgoing some prots in order to protect shareholder value - and managing this trade-off can be challenging. Corporate cases we have looked at in the past include the risks faced by the BP Deepwater Horizon catastrophe and those faced by Manchester United football club. Bank related cases considered and discussed in classes include the failure of Northern Rock, Royal Bank of Scotland, Lehman Brothers, Dexia and also the largest Icelandic banks. Insurance companies are special: they take on the risks that other rms and individuals dont want. We therefore look at how they manage to bear risks that others cant. As the holder of an MSc in Risk Management degree, you are entitled to join the Institute of Risk Management as a specialist member. If you decide to join the Chartered Insurance Institute, you will be entitled to certain exemptions from their examinations. Professor Martin Binks, School Dean and Professor of Entrepreneurial Development, does not regard the ultimate objective as teaching people how to start up a business. The aim is to enable them to realise a new project, whether that happens to be a lone business venture or a task within the NHS. Our entrepreneurship students take modules in subjects such as creative problem solving, social enterprise, entrepreneurial management, marketing, nance, and innovation management as well as getting to work with a local business on a live issue. The student spends several weeks with them and then has to present a report to show what theyve discovered - its one of the things students most like about the course. Our approach is not to tell people how to become entrepreneurs, but to really engage them in it so that it affects their capabilities. Students get the chance to compile a business plan and to work in multi-disciplinary teams. Multi- disciplinarity is also a particular feature of the innovative Joint MSc Entrepreneurship programmes students can take. Many of our students study entrepreneurship with a specic subject like chemistry, electrical engineering or IT, whereby they spend 50 per cent of their time in the school of that subject and 50 per cent of their time here. What this means is that we can get people from the arts and people from the sciences to work together on specic projects and they wind up with a much richer set of solution- related ideas.
