Eligibility

TobeeligibleforVRservices,youmusthavea physicalormentalimpairmentthatsubstantially interfereswithyourabilitytowork.Youmustalso requireandbeabletobenefitfromVRservicesthat wouldleadtopermanent,competitive employment. ThenarisingsenioratHillcrestHighSchoolin nearbySimpsonville,Darcywastheofficesfirst HighSchool/HighTech(HS/HT)studentand thefirstpersonwithadisabilitytoworkthere. Injuredinacaraccidentin2003whenhewasjust shyof15,hesustainedaspinalcordinjurythat keepshiminawheelchair.Computersarehis passion,soinanofficedependentonthem,hes notdisabledatall,saidVinceDiCarlo,warning coordinationmeteorologistandDarcysmentor. Hesagoodfitforthe(HS/HT)program,said KerryReece,careerplanningandemployment specialistwiththeS.C.VocationalRehabilitation DepartmentwhereDarcyisaclient. HS/HTprepareshighschoolstudentswith disabilitiestomakeresponsiblecareerchoices andmotivatesthemtograduateandeithermove intopostsecondaryeducationoratechnicaljob intheirinterestarea. Lightningsafetysbeenonthebackburner recently,DiCarlosaid.Thiswillhelpraise awareness. DiCarlowassoimpressedwithDarcysworkhe foundsomemoneyintheNationalOceanicand AtmosphericAdministrationsstudenttemporary employeeprogramtohirehimforthespring semester.Thissummer,Darcysworkingonan internshipfundedbytheNationalCollaborative onYouthwithDisabilitiesthatwasnegotiatedon behalfofHS/HTwithNOAA. TheprogramalsobenefitsNOAA,DiCarlosaid, byprovidingasourceoffutureemployees. NOAA isalargeorganization.Weemploy oceanographers,hydrologists,climatologists, meteorologistsandawiderangeofotherskills, hesaid.Mosthighschoolkidsarenotthinking alongthoselines. Darcysinterestedinengineeringand hopestogotoGreenvilleTechbefore possiblymovingontoClemsonUniversity. Thecompanyisprimarilyfocusingonhiring youngpeoplewhohavecognitivedisabilities, suchasattentiondeficitdisorderandlearning problems,saidRickPoole,aS.C.
