Rewriting Frankenstein

Pick one of the following scenes from the play. Think about how the situation affected the Monster. Think about how if the scene unfolded differently, the Monster may have changed. Rewrite one of the following to show how they would have impacted the Monster and his choices in life if the situation had been different. 1. 2. 3. 4. When Frankenstein sees the monster for the first time and his reaction is to run away When the monster is in a town, where dogs and towns people are after him When Felix shoots the monster When the monster kills William

Your scene should have between 2-4 characters. 1 or 2 of these characters may be your own characters (not from the play). Your scene will have two parts: 1. What happens to the monster (the situation) 2. His choices as a result (the impact) Which scene will you rewrite? When the monster kills William. What is the situation in the scene? What do others How does this affect the Monster? What impact does do to the Monster? it have on his life? What choices does he make as a William threatens the Monster and finally the Monster result? snaps and strangles William. This affects the Monster and makes him realize how he can be better than people and chooses to talk to Frankenstein instead of use violence. It has an impact on his life because he realizes that he should try to change his way of communicating. How will you change the situation? How might things happen differently during the scene? I will change the situation by making William accept the Monster and help educate the Monster and teach him how to be kind. The things that will be different is there will be Williams nanny who is the one to cause the Monster to snap and use violence. How will this affect the Monster? What impact will it have on his life? What choices will he make as a result? This will affect the Monster because it gives him a friend who finally accepts him for who he is rather than what he looks like and he decides to sacrifice his safety in order to save his only friend.

NOTE ON STAGING

SET DESIGN Well-tended garden Wealthy house (in the background) PROPS A big textbook for Emily A bundle of flowers for the Monster COSTUMES William A well stitched outfit fit for a little boy Monster A torn shirt matched with torn pants Emily A proper dress with a very tight corset (making her stand upright at all times). LIGHTING/SOUND/SPECIAL EFFECTS An orange lighting symbolizing a sunny day A dark blue and gray lighting for a rainy day later on. Clashing sound for the storm I chose to make Dr. Frankensteins family wealthy. The outfit that I have made up for William shows that he is the son of a wealthy family. The outfit for the Monster shows that he has been through a lot with that outfit. Emilys outfit shows that she is well paid by the family and is very proper. For the props I have chosen to give Emily a text book which shows that she is the one to help educate William. I have chosen to give the Monster a bouquet because it will be his way of showing William that he is truly better than what he looks like. I chose an orange lighting for the beginning which represents a beautiful sunny day but once the Monster and Emily enters the lighting will change to a dark blue lighting which represents a storm. I have chosen a clashing sound for the lighting while the lighting changes to dark blue which shows how much William is scared of both the Monster and Emily. CHARACTERS: Monster Lost, confused, lonely, misunderstood by other people. William Understanding, caring, forgiving, and kindhearted. Emily Judges people by their cover, strict. Villagers Do as they are told and do not think before they act.

The misunderstood tragedy

In a well-tended garden on a beautiful sunny morning, William is strolling along in front of a wealthy house behind him. Emily enters behind William with a textbook and stands there with her arms crossed. The Monster is hiding behind a bush silently eyeing them both. Emily slowly goes up to William and grabs his arm violently. William swings his body around and gasps in fright. Emily: Did I not tell you to go back inside 15 minutes ago?!? You have a tight schedule for this week and we need to get you prepared for your geography lesson at precisely 11:30 AM sharp! That means I have approximately 20 more minutes left. Please Emily? Just this once? I suppose so, but if I catch you coming back even a second late I will have to address your father about this.

William: Emily:

William runs up to Emily and rewards her with a hug. He continues to stroll on (still seen on the stage). Emily walks away and disappears off stage. The Monster slowly stands up and walks towards William. Monster: Me no harm friend.

William turns around hastily and screams. Monster: I. promise

The Monster hands William a bouquet of flowers which clearly looks like it was made by the Monster himself. William: Monster: William: (moves closer to the Monster while trembling) O.. Okay Me.. You.. Friends. (Laughs) I guess youre not that bad. Once you get past the smell and all that.

Emilys voice calls out Williams name indistinctively. William: Seems as if my nanny is calling me. Please say you wont mind hiding in the bush for a few hours, right? Me dont mind. Ill be right back!

Monster: William:

The Monster hides in the bushes for a few hours just as he was told to. But as the hours and minutes pass, William doesnt come back. In fear that something had happened to his new friend he stands up and walks towards the house. The Monster silently enters the house but accidently knocks down a chair making a loud bang as it hits the ground. William hurries down the stairs.

Friend! I offer my apologies as it seems I have forgotten about you. No. need sorry me okaaaayyy. (Racing down the stairs). Is that you William? Oh no quickly hide!

The Monster scrambles behind William trying to make himself as small as possible. Emily: Who is that youre talking to? What in the world is behind you???

William steps away from the Monster but the Monster unknowingly still crouches in a ball trying to conceal him from Emily. The Monster finally looks up and slowly and nervously stands up. Emily screams and pulls William to her side. Emily: William: Go away and never come back you hideous vile creature! He is not hideous! Nor is he a vile creature!

Emily grabs Williams hand and flings him behind him. Emily: Monster: You are not to speak to this monstrosity any longer! No one.. Hurt my. Friend!

The Monster leaps towards Emily and seizes for her throat. In fright Emily pushes William towards the Monster. The Monster grabs Williams throat instead and Williams lifeless body falls to the floor. Emily screams and heads for the door. The Monster lets her pass and crouches down beside Williams body. Monster: What.. have I done?

The monster moves the body outside next to the lake under the tree at exactly when the clock chimes at four oclock. The lighting turns gray and a flash of light shines brightly. A loud clash is heard and Emily returns only to be seen with a mob of angry villagers behind her with weapons. Emily: Monster: There it is! The Monster that killed William! Accident! Me. Friends.. William.

A single tear falls down of the Monsters face. Emily: Seize him!

The villagers charge towards the Monster and stab him with no mercy while the Monster stands still accepting his punishment for killing William. Both William and the Monster lie down next to each other. The light dims leaving only a spotlight on both of them.
