The Bakhti Islamic Yoga of Devotion

Bakhti is the yoga of devotion. The Bakhti yogi devotes herself to a goddess or god and through devotional service seeks to gain unity with the divine. Since the deity is a symbol for a divine attribute within the yogi himself, the Bakhti yogi actually strives to unify the lower (jivan) and higher (atman) selves. The Quranic ayats about devoutness and devotion provide the basis for Islamic Bakhti (devotional) Tauhid/Yoga. The Bakhti yogi seldom devotes herself directly to her deity. Her devotion is usually to her guru who is seen as an embodiment of the god similar to the theory of Catholic priests being representatives of god when they are performing their clerical duties. Abraham had a student-master (chela-guru) relationship with Malik Saddiq (Melchizedek). Moses had such a relationship with Jethro (Shu'aib). In the Middle Eastern system a guru was sometimes called "Rabbi" and God was believed to be the supreme Rabbi or "Lord of the worlds" (Quran 1:1). The Rabbi/Guru/Imam is actually a teacher, guide and initiator. The guru is sometimes called a "master" and by this is

meant a master teacher, not a slave master type of master. When the Bible tells his slaves to be obedient to their masters it means for student-initiates ("slaves") to be obedient to their spiritual masters or gurus. No physical slave should be any more obedient to a physical slave master than he has to. Master Fard Muhammad was a teacher-master to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. The Hindu yogis are wont to stress that "the guru is god." Well, perhaps in an honorary sense. The guru gives the students what he got from his master who got it from the scriptures or tantras, etc., which were written by rishis who came from gods (divas). So a guru is a "god" stepped on or cut about a million times. The 'abd (initiate or "slave") is an apprentice to an established master and learns by doing, by working as well as by observation and listening. But on-the-job training surpasses mere book learning or lecture learning (8th sphere, lower-level ways of learning). Eventually, the Bakhti yogi becomes devoted to working within the system of spiritual cultivation associated with the deity. Eventually, the Bakhti yogi becomes devoted to working within the system of spiritual cultivation associated with the deity. A Bakhti devotee of Sekert/Kali would persevere, spend time and effort cultivating shakti energy and perhaps tantric sexual energy practices. Eventually, she'd become a living shrine or avatar of Kali and share in the goddess' powers. While a Bakhti's main focus is devotion, he'd also employ techniques from other yogic systems. He'd chant (mantra yoga) Kali's mantras. He'd meditate (jnana yoga) on Kali's image. He might practice certain austerities and restraints (niyama). Eventually visions of the goddess would be had an revelation from her would be occasionally downloaded. Surely Abraham was an ummah, devoted to Allah, upright.

-- Quran 16:120 The goddess Isis is the divine Kamitic archetype of Bakhti yoga. Her devotion to her husband Ausar is a metaphor for a Bakhti's devotion to God. Sometimes, as in the Song of Solomon, a Bakhti's devotion is described in romantic, even erotic terms. When Ausar was murdered by Set (Satan) and chopped into 14 pieces, Auset (Isis) overcame many obstacles to find all of Ausar's members and to reassemble him, revive him and give her husband an heir. Despite setbacks, opposition and even persecution a Bakhti remains steadfast and constant (Arabic Sabr). The Semitic type for Isis is Maryam (Mary). O Maryam, be devout for your Rabbi. -- Quran 3:42 And Maryam, the daughter of Amran, who guarded her vagina. So We breathed Our Spirit into it and she chanted truthfully (saddaqat) with the Letters of her Rabbi and His Scriptures, and she became one of the devoted ones. -- Quran 66:12 A Muslim Bakhti would devote himself to one of the 99 Names (attributes/aspects) and follow the procedures of that aspect of divine. He might become a billionaire be devoting himself to al-Ghani. But he'd have to serve al-Ghani by financially assisting others. It should be pointed out that the attribute al-Ghani is further evidence of Islam's debt to African spirituality for its concepts. Al-Ghani, the Enriched One, comes from the word Ghana which means "gold."

Like Catholic nuns, female Bakhtis are sometimes regarded as wives of the got to whom they are devoted. This relationship can be abused by fake gurus who, posing as the embodiment of the deity, take young women Bakhtis as sexual partners under false pretenses. To me, this amounts to a kind of molestation. An initiate who spends more time watching TV than cultivating her spirit indicates, by her behaviour, that the god to whom she is devoted is the TV, not Ausar, Het-Heru, etc. Of course, if she happened to work as a TV critic, producer or any field where watching TV was important to her livelihood, the above would not apply. A Bakhti is devoted and makes time for spiritual practice. She restrains herself from behaviours that impede her development and her realization of her true self.
