Making Reading a Part of Your Family's Lifestyle

Parents play a critical role in helping their children to develop not only the ability to read, but also the enjoyment of reading. In the early childhood years, parents can help in their child's quest to become avid readers for life by following these principles.

Turn off the tube. Start by limiting your families' television viewing time. Teach by example. If you have books, newspapers and magazines around your house, and your child sees you reading, then your child will learn that you value reading. The value of "modeling the way" is very important in a young child's life. Read together. Reading with your child is a great activity. It not only teaches your child that reading is important to you, but it also offers a chance to talk about the book and often other issues will come up. Books can really open the lines of communication between the parent and child.

Hit the library. Try finding books about current issues or interests in your child or family's life. For example, if your child is going to the dentist soon, you may want to check out books about going to the dentist. Or, if your family is going on an airplane soon you may want to take out books about a plane ride. Speak to your

local children's librarian about books that are by highly-recommended authors and illustrators. Moreover, check your local library's schedule of children's activities. This may include drop-in story times and reading programs where parents can help their children earn prizes and value reading more while their parents are again modeling the importance of reading. Libraries are rich resources in our neighborhoods that sometimes get forgotten. Parents should make sure they have a current library card so parents can check out books. Young children should be encouraged to get a library card as soon as possible. Some libraries will issue library cards as soon as the child can write his or her name. Let your child take out books when he or she is able to because this helps to encourage responsibility.

As part of the Month of the Young child, we have a family field trip planned. On the evening of April 24, 2013, we will meet at the Des Plaines Library. They will be given a tour of the children's area, the families will have a story time, and we will talk about the importance of library cards. This will also include a behind the scenes tour of the circulation area.
