The report investigates the impact of expansion on ASB. The area of expansion, which includes the new branch facilities and new employees. Determining the number of new staff needed to create the branch network. The impact it will have on the training and professional development of new and existing employees.

i. Expanding the branch network:


The bank is looking to expand its network. For that it needs new locations through which it can operate and expand its working. Today, ASB has 800 locations spreading across the country. To strengthen its working and for better customer acquisition it requires 200 more branches. Branches at prime locations will attract new customers and will provide convenience to the existing customers. (branch banking in a multichannel world, 2012)

Expansionrequirements and recommendati ons

200 new branches at convenient and prime locations across main centers in the country. Recruiting and selecting nearly 1600 efficient new staff. Orienting the new staff with the technology, staff and workings in the bank. Training the new and existing staff for better human resource capital. Need for more training centers. Advertising the new branch network for better brand recognition.

Recruitment of staff:

For 200 new facilities ASB requires around 1600 new employees (since average no. of staff in one branch is 8). The various methods of recruitment available are:

Job centers- These are paid for by the government and are
responsible for helping the unemployed find jobs. It is a free service which will save the recruitment cost. Advertisement- The bank will have to advertise for job vacancies. The major forms of advertising options available are: newspaper, online advertising, recruitment fairs etc.). This is the most cost incurring but effective method. Recruitment agencies: head hunter Agencies like RAC, NJR can help the bank find suitable candidates. Personal recommendation: often referred as word of mouth and can be a recommendation from a colleague at work. It saves advertising cost. (Riley, 2012)

iii. Development and training needs of staff:


After recruiting the required staff, it will require the professional development and training to work efficiently. Training is crucial for the organizational development. It will improve the morale of the employees and increase their productivity. Less supervision will be required and will result in fewer accidents. Methods available to ASB for training the staff are: On the job training: It is a simple and cost effective method. Training of banking systems will be provided within the everyday working. The motto of such training is learn by doing. The in proficient as well as semi proficient employees can be well trained by this training method. Off the job training: All the training and development cannot be done on the job. Training related to the working of our banking software and other complex forms require more time and space. Advantage of this training method is that the new recruits can be given training together in a short period. It is an expensive method as it is a vestibule training. Recommendation to cut the cost of buying a new facility for training is to outsource via specialized banking training centers. (Training Of Employees, 2013)

Recommendations on the need of new staff:


Before the employee begins employment, a welcome letter should be sent. Providing them the job description and the suggested performance goals. Show them the facilities. Schedule any computer training. Assign an experienced staff member as their buddy or mentor.

Requirements of existing staff:


Job rotation to make them more competent workforce. Providing them with training for keeping them updated with technological changes. Shifting some of the existing staff to new branches as mentors for new employees. Using them to train the new employees.

Conclusion:
While spreading the branch network, ASB has to invest in the property in both rural areas and prime locations in Wellington and other main centers like Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch. There is a need for better branching in south island to increase the market share. Advertising and training of employees is cost incurring but beneficial for ASB in the long run. Hiring a mix of greenhorns(less experienced) and experienced staff for better resource utilization. Providing both the on job and off the job training to new and existing staff. Rotating some of the existing staff to new branches to keep a

balance in the overall experience. Fulfilling the requirements of both new and existing staff mentioned above for ASBs better workforce. If these changes are implemented effectively ASB can reach new heights and a larger market share and be the best in its sector.
