Photoshop. A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted with

Date

Course/Instructor
COMM 130, Eric Lybbert, Section 1

Programs/Tools
Adobe Photoshop, Olympus digital camera

Objectives

-Learn basic photography skills. -Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. -Size and crop the image. -Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. -Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. -Desaturate the selected portion of the image. -Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process

I began looking around my room for interesting objects to take a photo of and I decided to use a new bottle of mouthwash. I set it on my dresser and opened a window to bring in natural light. I used the macro setting on my camera and got close at an interesting angle and took a couple of pictures of it. I decided the angle to have approximately two-thirds of the mouthwash in the shot and the other third to be other random objects on the dresser to be faded out in the background. After taking the photos I chose the best one and sent it into Adobe Photoshop for editing. I desaturated everything around the bottle, pumped up the saturation of the bottle itself, and colorized it by changing the hue from blue to green. I chose green because it stuck out to me as a more interesting color that was not as obnoxious as changing to to a bright red, purple, or yellow.

Programs/Tools

Objectives

-Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. -Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. -Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process

My oldest brother has recently purchased Five Star Paintings first location in Virginia. I looked up the companys logo and I didnt like it very much, so I decided to do my project as a re-design of the logo. I wanted to implement elements that symbolize the companys name, so I made star, paint brush, paint strokes, and paint bucket graphics in Adobe Illustrator. Then I searched for a font for Five Star because I wanted those two words to pop out. I wanted something bold looking but clean at the same time, so I chose Britannic Bold and then chose a slab serif for Painting to contrast with the sans serif. I placed the logo onto the business card layout, placed in the necessary information and made the font Clarendon BT, the slab serif font in the logo for repetition. I aligned all of the information and separated the info from the logo. I wanted my name to contrast with my contact information, so I made the contact information the same light blue in the paint stroke and bolded my name. I placed the same elements into the letterhead, made the star shape bigger and made it opaque to create a light watermark. I used a dark line to create visible borders for the text on the page. Lastly, I placed the information at the bottom and aligned it with the logo.

Montage
Description
An inspirational montage blending two different photos with Photoshop filters and using text.

Date
2/16/2013

Course/Instructor
COMM 130, Eric Lybbert, Section 1

Programs/Tools
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives

-Learn to manage Photoshop layers. -Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. -Use filters. -Apply appropriate typography.

Process

I started by searching for inspirational nature backgrounds, which led me to my final decision of using the sunset photo. I then searched for images of, perhaps, a boy looking up toward the sky into destiny. Instead of finding these images, I stumbled across images of dogs, specifically pugs, looking up. I thought this was funny, so I decided to use a picture of a pug instead and blended it with the background image with a mask and paint brush set to about 30% opacity. I decided to pull out the last word in the quote, destiny, as the focus of the montage since the rest of the quote is what leads up to that last word. I positioned the dog on the right to look up toward the word destiny to create flow and focus toward it. I resized the word destiny to create more contrast between it and the text below it. I also moved the text further below to separate it a little from the title word. I used the Hue and Saturation filter on the background and pumped up the lightness so the pug and text would pop out more.

Programs/Tools
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign

Objectives

-Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. -Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. -Incorporate quality images.

Process

I went onto Google Image search, searched Five Star Painting, and grabbed as many images as I could so I had a selection to work from when creating the flier. I set up my document to the standard brochure layout and set up my guides in the appropriate areas. I wanted to use the same two fonts in my logo for the brochure to maintain consistency so I used the Britannica Bold for the title font and the Clarendon BT for the copy font. I started using simple blue graphics on the front side to give the document a brochure feel. I applied the image of the woman painting to flow across the front. I used small images for the right side and put borders around them to give them a cleaner look and pop out more. I placed the logo on the back and inside. I pasted my text in and then applied paragraph styles. I made the headings the same font but bigger and I used the same blue found throughout the brochure to contrast with the small, black text. I aligned the text on the inside to match up. I put in an image text wrap of a man painting. I put contact information on the back in small white letters.

Course/Instructor

Programs/Tools
Microsoft Word, a photo scanner

Objectives

-Find, scan and import a high-quality image. -Create a full-bleed design. -Use text boxes for layout in Word. -Insert and edit images in Word.

Process

I scanned the lemon image and placed it into a Word document. This made me come up with the event idea, selling lemonade. I gave the background a wooden backdrop to give it that lemonade stand feel and I added green boxes to compliment the yellow and white color from the image. I chose a Rage Italic font for the title because it had a homemade look to it on the wooden backdrop. I chose a Georgia font to compliment the decorative font and used that for the word fresh and for my copy text. I aligned the text for most of my piece except for the word Fresh to add some contrast from that alignment.

Objectives

-Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. -Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. -Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. -Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. -Identify hex colors for web design. -Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process

I used the five star logo and used that as the logo image the web page is about. I adjusted the header padding to make it more even and I shrunk the text size so I could fit the words High-Quality Paint Services. I changed the background color to blue to match the blue in the logo. I changed the h1 header to yellow to match the star in the logo. I kept the text black and bold and changed it to a sans serif font to match with the sans serif in the logo. I kept the default times new roman for the body copy to match the serif in the logo and make it more readable. I made the list items as steps in my process so I made those bolder. I changed the link tag and text at the bottom of the page to make it contrast with the information above it.

Objectives Process

-Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. -Use the basic tools of Illustrator. I started by researching other library logo designs. Some basic ideas came to mind after looking around, but I wanted to create something quite different from what I was seeing. I stuck with the idea of creating a subtle graphic that may suggest an open or closed book and I refined them to three ideas. I then went back and applied contrasting two fonts, one for Madison Public and another for Library that compliment each design. I wanted the word Library to pop out so I always tried to create the greatest contrast and emphasis with that word. I then aligned the design with each block of text. Lastly, I integrated in colors that would pop out to give each logo to enhance its nuanced feel.

Flier

A black and white promotional flier for a graduate leadership conference event.

Course/Instructor

Programs/Tools
Adobe InDesign

Objectives

-Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. -Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. -Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. -Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process

I started the creative process of this flier by sketching out four possibilities. Each possibility were somewhat similar so I know the direction I was already going. I ended up pulling different elements from each sketch for my rough draft, having an oldstyle font for the title in a contrasting box with sans serif copy text. Many of my ideas were to use script for my title but I nixed that for oldstyle because it was more readable and looked better inside the black box. I repeated the elment of dark boxes for the first sentence of the copy text and the date, time, and place information at the bottom. I bolded the website to make it stand out a little more. I used feathering effects on my image to give it a cleaner look on the page. The image, logo, and content for the flier were already provided.
