The endocrine system consists of glands. A gland is a cell or a collection of cells that produces a chemical substance. The glands of the endocrine system produce substances called hormones. The hormones are usually released into the blood stream. Blood carries the hormones throughout the body. However, each hormone affects only certain organs. Do you know anyone who has diabetes? Diabetes is caused by a lack of the hormone called insulin. The pancreas produces insulin which allows the body to use sugar that is in the blood stream. If there is a lack of insulin, the sugar cant be used for energy. This causes the body to waste away. Some people who have diabetes can control the sugar level by limiting their intake of sugar. Some diabetics take insulin shots to make the sugar available for use by the body. 1.
