Montage
Description: I had to take images from any source and splash them together to create a montage using Adobe Photoshop Date: February 17, 2013 Course: Comm. 130 Visual Media Section 02 Instructor: Caryn Esplin Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop CS6 Objectives: * Learn to manage Photoshop layers. * Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. * Use filters. * Apply appropriate typography. Process: I wanted to make a promotional movie poster so I got three photos: Gerard Butler, a jeep going uphill, and a pyroclastic cloud from google images. In Photoshop, I added the pyroclastic cloud as my background layer, the jeep as the secondary layer, and Gerard Butler as the final layer. I created masks to both the jeep and Gerard Butler layers and used the paintbrush tool to erase their backgrounds. I lowered the saturation on the jeep in order to blend in with the grey color of the pyroclastic cloud layer and used the filter diffuse glow in order to have a grimier look on the jeep. I cut the photo of Gerard Butler in half, dragged it to the edge of the background layer, and then lowered the opacity down to 59% to have a transparent effect; I used a white PortagolTC TT text as my main titles and an Arial bold for my poster information.

Logos
Description: I had to create three original logos for a fictional company using Adobe Illustrator. Date: February 23, 2013 Course: Comm. 130 Visual Media Instructor: Caryn Esplin - Section: 2 Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: * Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. * Use the basic tools of Illustrator. Process: I first found a sun disk image and I scanned it onto Adobe Illustrator. I locked the image, and I erased the remaining white background. I used the threshold tool to thicken the image and I changed the color of the sun disk to dark gold. Afterwords I placed a circle image onto the middle of the sun disk and later colored it black. I drew six white circles onto the bigger circle to make it look like a film reel. I put a filter onto the whole image to make it look bolder and give it a shadow effect. For the text, I used Matura MT Script Capitals to give an ancient kind of feel to the logo.

Letterhead
Description: I had to make my own logo and create a stationary letterhead. Date: March 2, 2013 Course/ Instructor: Comm. 130 Visual Media Caryn Esplin Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign Objectives: - Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. - Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. - Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Process: In the Letterhead I used simply put my logo box on the upper left corner of the page in Adobe InDesign. I then aligned the company information with the company slogan. I took the image of the roaster in the sombrero and put it on the lower right side of the page, and I then reflected it, resized it, and lowered its opacity.

Business Card
Description: I had to make my own logo and create a business card. Process: For the business card I took images of a roaster and a sombrero then image scanned their outlines on Adobe Illustrator, and attached them together. I then used the rectangle tool to create a box, and used the stroke tool to give it a thicker cracking effect; in the middle of box I used Rockwell Bold for the logos text.

Brochure
Description: I had to make a brochure using Adobe InDesign about any content I wanted. I chose to make a brochure about a fictional film camp. Date: March 30, 2013 Course:/ Instructor: Comm. 130 Visual Media Caryn Esplin Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe InDesign Objectives: - Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. - Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. - Incorporate quality images. Process: I came up with the idea of creating a four-page brochure for a fictional film camp in Rexburg, ID. Using Adobe InDesign I made two pages completely black, and left the other white. For the white pages I positioned text like a film script and placed a camera clip art at the center of the front page. On the two black pages I made the font color white and placed images of kids operating cameras.

Flier
Description: I had to make a professional flier using Adobe Indesign. Date: 1/26/2013 Course, Section & Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media - Section 02 Instructor: Caryn Esplin Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe InDesign Objectives: * Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. * Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. * Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. * Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact. Process: I had to create nice looking flier for a leadership conference so I used of powerful symbols of transitional gradient boxes. For my project I used the boxes for repetition and contrast of light gradually turning into darkness. For proximity, I separated and grouped information about the DTP, info about the company, title, question, and registration on different areas of the page. All the boxes and some of the title were aligned with one another. I bold and colored the text in order also portray contrast.

Event Ad
Description: I had to create a an event advertisement by scanning a picture from a magazine and edit it only using Microsoft Word. Date: February 2, 2013 Course/ Instructor: Comm. 130 Visual Media Caryn Esplin Program(s) / Tools used: Microsoft Word Epson Scanner PDF2JPG.net Objective - Find, scan and import a high-quality image. - Create a full-bleed design - Use text boxes for layout in Word. - Insert and edit images in Word. Process: I scanned a picture of a dog on a car window with an Epson Scanner in the Spori Lab and created the ad in Microsoft Word. I applied the element of proximity by grouping the important information of the ad at the lower right corner side of the paper, and the title information on the upper left corner. The image itself has contrast by the division of lighter colors of white against the deeper colors of brown and blue, and also the colors of the text groups to separate them into different levels of importance. I aligned the different text groups within 5inch margins of the paper. I wanted the flow of the ad to begin at the upper left corner of the page then to go down the image of the dog on the car window and then end at the ad information at the lower right-side corner. For repetition, I kept putting information only in corners of the page.

W eb Page
Description: I had to make a html web page using a logo and content of my very own. Date: March 16, 2013 Course/Instructor: Comm. 130 Visual Media Section 2 - Caryn Esplin Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, CSS + Html, Textwrangler Objectives: - Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. - Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. - Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. - Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. - Identify hex colors for web design. - Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file. Process: I wrote the code for my webpage page using Html and CSS through the program TextWrangler. First, I used the html activity that I worked on previously, and then I started experimenting with the coding in CSS. I changed the background border from white to dark gold, and then I made the body-copy background from white to dark green using the color codes from Adobe Photoshop. Using the CSS coding, I linked my logo to the html page and centered it. I got rid of both the borderline around the body copy page and the header banner on top. I made another header banner, and turned its background red, and moved it to the middle of the html page. I changed the body copy font from Times New Roman to Palatino, and I changed the middle header font from Verdana to Tahoma. Then changed header font to white, and the body copy font to dark gold in order to match the border color around the html page to give it a south of the border look. After I finished coding every thing I then validated the html file using http://validator.w3.org/#validate_by_upload.

Imaging
Description: I had take a high quality photo of my choosing and then manipulate it with various filters and tools of Adobe Photoshop CS6. Date: 2/8/13 Course/Instuctor: Comm. 130 Visual Media Caryn Esplin Program(s) / Tools used: Adobe Photoshop CS6 Objectives: - Learn basic photography skills. - Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. - Size and crop the image. - Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. - Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. - Desaturate the selected portion of the image. - Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image. Process: I went down to my apartments lounge and took some photos of the pool table. My girlfriend and I love playing pool so I thought it would be cool to do a project involving a pool ball. I favored the pool ball # 2, so I arranged it to the side to be my main focus, and placed the other pool balls farther away from the focus so it would follow the rules of thirds. After I took my photo, I went to a computer lab and uploaded it to Photoshop. I watched the instructional videos from Brainhoney to understand the editing process. I re-sized the photo to 6 X 6 and then used the lassoed tool around pool ball # 2. I cropped the photo and de-saturated the background
