SAP Landscape Transformation Replication Server for SAP HANA

Introduction Many use cases of SAP HANA need a data provisioning concept that integrates existing SAP sources with the outstanding performance capabilities of SAP HANA. With SAP Landscape Transformation (LT) replication server for SAP HANA, SAP offers the ideal solution for all existing SAP customers who need real-time (and non real-time) data replication sourcing from SAP ERP systems into SAP HANA. LT replication server is based on proven SLO technologies that have already been used for years in SAP products like SAP Test Data Migration Server and SAP Landscape Transformation as well as in many near zero downtime-based upgrade projects mainly by SAP customers with large databases. Strengths and Benefits of Using SAP LT Replication Server for Data Replication into SAP HANA LT replication server for SAP HANA is a trigger-based concept that only considers the tables relevant for data replication. Developed for SAP upgrade projects to reduce the technical downtime close to zero, this trigger-based solution controls and executes the data replication into SAP HANA in real-time and non real-time (scheduled) through the SAP application layer. Beside the flexibility to perform initial data load (only) or initial load with continuous delta replication from any SAP sources (SAP 4.6C onwards), the strengths and benefits of LT replication server include the following: Support data replication from non-unicode to unicode Ability to handle all SAP table formats, incl. cluster and pool tables Comprehensive, out-of-the-box mapping and conversion functionality built in to migrate data structure and values automatically during the replication into HANA DB format (for example, date fields to be migrated into strings) Flexible platform with advanced transformation capabilities Support for different system landscapes and system set-ups, for example, several source systems and HANA systems can be connected through one LT replication server Ability to centrally monitor the replication process and to optimize performance while lowering the load on the source systems to a minimum. The system set-up that is based on proven SAP installation procedures takes only a few hours. In combination with a state-of-the art and easy-to-use user interface - that is fully integrated with the existing SAP HANA studio SAP HANA customers gain with LT replication server an immediate return of investment at lowest TCI. Product Overview

SAP LT replication server acts as a data replication instance between the source system(s) and the HANA environment. The LT replication server polls the relevant data from the source system using the RFC connection and replicates it using the DB connection into the HANA environment. The graphic below outlines the architecture and key building blocks of the trigger-based replication concept.

Fast data replication via DB connect LT replication functionality is fully integrated with HANA Modeler UI

If data should be continuously replicated (either real-time or non real-time) into HANA, logging tables and database triggers are automatically created in the source system. The DB triggers record all changes of application tables in logging tables. The control modules that reside on the LT replication server instance manage the replication process and initiate the data replication through the read modules in the source system to the HANA system. On the LT replication server instance, the data replication process is managed by dedicated schemas. For each source system at least one schema needs to be defined including the following parameters: Number of maximum replay jobs: important for load balancing of the source system and the speed of the data replication Connectivity to source system (RFC user) and HANA DB Assignment of table spaces for logging tables (optionally) Replication mode (real-time vs. scheduled)

Once the configuration of the LT replication server has been completed, the data replication can be initiated through the UI of the SAP HANA studio. The set-up of the data replication consists of the following steps: Select the source system with related schema Define the replication method Using the Load button, the tables can be selected for initial data load only. Using the Replicate button, data from selected tables will be initially loaded and continuously replicated (depending on the settings on the LT replication server in real-time or scheduled). Using the Stop button allows to discontinue the data replication for selected tables Proof of Points and Customer Example SAP LT replication server is based on proven SLO technologies that have been used for more than 10 years and in several hundred projects per year. Many SAP upgrade projects using the nearzero downtime approach already leveraged the trigger-based concept. Those customer cases with large databases (between 10-25TB) and replicating more than 2.0 billion records in several weeks - confirm that the trigger-based concept does not have any measurable impact on the performance of the source system(s). Surgutneftegas is one of the first HANA customers using LT replication server as data provisioning technology for their proof-of-concept and their future productive HANA scenarios. The following business scenarios are currently in focus: Stock Analysis/Inventory Management with out-of-stock control system Execution of contracts Fixed assets Using LT replication server, all application data relevant to the targeted business scenarios is being replicated from the ERP source system to the SAP HANA database without any measurable performance impact of the DB triggers on the ERP system. The replication server is hosted on a lightweight SAP NetWeaver system. It transforms the relevant data from non-Unicode into Unicode format and is decrypting encrypted data sets while replicating the data in real-time into the HANA database. Technical Requirements and System Set-Up Information: LT replication server does not have to be deployed on a separate SAP system and may run on any SAP system with SAP NetWeaver 7.02 ABAP stack (using SAP Kernel 7.20EXT), for example SAP Solution Manager 7.1. With the release of SPS02 for SAP HANA 1.0, the software required to install SAP LT replication server is included in the software download of SAP HANA. The installation consists of the following steps:

On the source system: install DMIS 2010 add-on (incl. latest released SP level) and prepare a user for RFC communication All platforms on release SAP R/3 4.6C onwards are supported On LT replication server instance: DMIS 2010_1_700 add-on (at least SP04) If a separate SAP system is used for the LT replication server, the following hardware configuration is suggested:
o o o o CPU 2-4 cores RAM: 16-32 GB Hard disk: >100GB Number of available background jobs: 10

On the SAP HANA 1.0 environment, SP Stack 02 has to be installed to benefit from the integrated use of the LT replication server functionality within the SAP HANA studio. The Installation and Configuration Guide as well as the Security Guide of SAP LT replication server for SAP HANA describe all steps in more detail find at: http://service.sap.com. First experiences confirm that the installation and basic configuration for SAP LT replication server is simple and fast (less than one day effort).
