Y 8 Statistics assessment Do Y 8 boys jump farther than Y 8 girls in long jump at NIS?

Fah-Sai Punyashthiti 8C

Introduction:
In our math class, our current unit is on statistics. In class, we had to choose a topic that you are interested in and you want to research on. I did a research and experiment on do year 8 boys jump farther than year 8 girls in long jump? In this experiment, my partner (Pimboon) and I had discussed and decided to do a sample of two year eight classes to represent every student in year 8 at NIST. I have collected data and information to answer this question. In this report, there will be information and graphs to show you how I did the calculations and I will be showing you about the results of the survey. I will be presenting the boys data and information and then, I will be showing the girls calculations and data. For the graphs, I used the midpoints and the center to show the results in the graph. I have used this because I thought that this calculation will be appropriate for this experiment since the calculation for the result might be less misleading and this is also because it will be easier for me to calculate the results clearly without too much numbers involved.

My research question:
Do year 8 boys jump farther than year 8 girls in long jump?

Hypothesis:
I think that year 8 boys will jump farther than girls because most of the boys are taller than girls and that will give them advantage. Also, I think that the boys will jump farther than girl because most of them do more sports than girls this will be one of the affects because by playing sports regularly will keep them stronger and fitter than the ones who dont.

Reference to AOIs:
In this report, I have chosen the Health and Social Education theme to research on, this theme will help me develop a sense of responsibility and health. I chose this theme because I am very interested in sports and doing this topic, do boys jump farther than girls in long jump, has interested me even more in long jump.

Evidence (data collection and collection):

This was the data that I have collected; I did an experiment which included all of the year 8C and 8E kids and I have asked them to jump as long as possible and I had recorded the length they had landed and how long they had jump from their starting point to the end point were their feets had landed. I got my information from the whole class of 8C and 8E except one of the student that could not be able to do the experiment because of an injured leg. My partner (Pimboon) and I called the names of people and ask them to come with us to do the experiment.

This is our specifications for the experiment: Must land with two feet Must take off on the line Must not step back from starting line Must measure from back of feet where landed, not where stuttered to.

I will be explaining the boys results and the calculations first: The frequency table: This is the data and the frewuency table of the boys long jump results in CM : Length (CM) Frequency (f) 0 4 9 11 3 27 Midpoint / Centre Fx

Graph: This is the graph shows the results for the boys long jump in CM:

The distance of long jump (boys) Cm

12 10 8 6 4 2 0 75 125 175 225 The length of Long Jump (cm) 275 Boys

Analyzing:
The graph above shows that there is 0 boys who got lower than 75cm, 4 boys whos midpoint is 125, 9 boys whos midpoint is 175, 11 boys midpoint is 225 cm and only 3 boys which got 275 cm as their midpoint. On the Y axis represents the Number of boys who jumped and the X axis is the length of how far they had jumped to. As you can see, the graph is escalating up until the 225 cm and then it drops down very fast. By looking at this graph, I can tell that most of the boys jumped around 225 cm and down wards. ADFS

Now, I will be talking and explaining about the girls data that I have collected:

The frequency table

This is the frequency table that I have created in order to show the girls results: Length (CM) 50 but less than 100 100 but less than 150 150 but less than 200 200 but less than 250 250 but less than 300 total Frequency 1 0 13 3 2 19 Midpoint/ centre 75 125 175 225 275 FX 75 0 2275 675 550

CALCULATIONS FOR GIRLS : This is the calculations I did for the girls information and data that I have collected: Mean : 125 + 125 + 125 + 175 + 175 + 175 + 175 + 175 + 175 + 175 + 175 + 175 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 225 + 275 + 275 + 275 = 5250 / the amount of data (27) = 194.444 Median: 125 125 125 175 175 175 175 175 175 175 175 175 225 225 225 225 225 225 225 225 225 225 225 275 275 275 = (27) numbers altogether and divide by 2 to get the middle number = 13 and 4 =and 225 and 225 = 225 Mode: (125 = 3) (175 = 9) (225 = 11) (275 = 3) = 225 is the mode because it is the often

how far the girls have jumped (length) Cm

14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 75 125 175 225 275 Girls

Analyzing: The graph above is not very similar to the boys data and graph that I have shown above. This graph shows that there is 1 girl whos midpoint and/or center is 75cm, there is 0 girls whose midpoint is 125, 13 girls whos midpoint is 175cm, only 3 girls whos midpoint is 225 cm and only 2 girls which got 275 cm as their midpoint. On the Y axis represents the Number of girls who jumped and the X axis is the length of how far they had jumped to. As you can see, this graph is also escalating up until the 175 cm and then it drops down very fast. By looking at this graph, I can tell that most of the girls had jumped around 175 cm and down wards because 175 cm is the highest midpoint on the data that we had collected.

Now, I will compare both of the results in order to answer my big topic question which is Do Y 8 boys jump farther than Y 8 girls in long jump? The frequency tables: As you can see, these are the two frequency table which is the boys and the girls.

Girls
This is the girls results (shown before) Length (CM) 50 but less than 100 100 but less than 150 150 but less than 200 200 but less than 250 250 but less than 300 total Frequency 1 0 13 3 2 19 Midpoint/ centre 75 125 175 225 275 FX 75 0 2275 675 550

14 12

Number of boys and girls jumped

10 8 Boys 6 4 2 0 75 125 175 225 275 Girls

The Midpoints/ centre (CM) Length

Analyzing (comments and explanations) As you can see in this comparison graph above, the girls are in blue and the boys are in green. You can tell that boys jump farther than girls, you can see that there are only 2 girls whos midpoint/ center is 725 cm and there is 3 boys whose midpoint is 225 cm. It was a quite similar result from the boys and the girls because in the 175 cm column, the girls jumped farther than the boys but for 225, there were more boys than girls. This shows that the boys can jump farther than the girls because there were more boys who got 275 cm as there midpoint more than the girls and since 275 was the highest midpoint of the year 8 boys and girls, it shows that year 8 boys can jump farther that year 8 girls.

COMMENTS & EXPLANATIONS:

THE ANSWER TO THE RESEARCH QUESTION:
My topic / research question is Do Y 8 boys jump farther than Y 8 girls in long jump at NIS? As you can see from the pages before this, I have all the data and information that I have collected in the graphs and my answer to that question is yes, Y 8 boys do jump farther than year 8 girls in long jump at NIS. My hypothesis before this, on page one was correct, since my hypothesis was that year 8 boys will jump farther than year 8 girls in long jump.

COMMENT ON THE METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION:

I think that my method of the data collections was successful because my partner (Pimboon) and I had used excel to collect all of the information to present and record to make all of the graphs above. This is because I got the data I needed and I had specifications that I followed and this made it clear for me in order to record the information in time in an organized manner.

COMMENTS ON THE GRAPHS:

I think that the type of graph that I have used to produce the work is very accurate and very simple yet appropriate for this type of work because it is easy to see and compare between both graphs. . I think that this like of graph was a very good Idea because it can compare two things without having it too complicated to see and look at. I do not think that line graphs would work as well as this out (column graphs) because you cannot really compare two things with the line graphs.

WHAT WENT WELL, WHAT DIDNT, IMPROVEMENTS:

In my perspective, I think I did the collecting the data and organizing it was went very smoothly since I had a very big space to do the experiment and this is because we had specifications. I think that it think that didnt go very well was making the graphs because I had technology difficulties and it had impact me a lot because I had to ask others for help and fixing the technology difficulties. One of the improvements I could have made was to divide my time better because the time management wasnt very good so I can improve that by dividing my time and organizing it clearly so I can spend equal amount of times doing calculations and reflection

CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, I chose to do a research on a sports topic for my math investigation. My topic question is Do y 8 boys jump farther than year 8 girls in long jump at NIS? I had to research and experimented to find out the answer to that question. I decided to do my experiment as a sample of the whole year 8 at NIS. My hypothesis was that year 8 boys will jump farther because of their health and their heights. At the end, my hypothesis was correct and according to the results that I have gotten. I have learned lots of things and communicate with new people since we did out experiment with 2 classes which was 8E and 8C.
