Rightnow,lawmakersinWashingtonareconsideringaproposaltochangethewaycostoflivingadjustmentsare calculatedforbothcurrentandfutureSocialSecuritybeneficiariesandthosereceivingveteransbenefits.The changewouldreduceexpectedincreaseseachyearstartingnowandreductionswouldgrowovertime.The proposal,thesocalledchainedorsuperlativeCPI,wouldalsoaffecthowthetaxcodeisadjustedforinflation, whichwouldtranslateintohighertaxesformosttaxpayers.Theproposalisbeingconsideredaspartofalarger agreementtoreducethedeficit.ThissurveyexaminedMainevotersopinionsonaproposaltoadoptachainedor superlativeCPItoreducethedeficit.ItalsolookedathowfavorabilitywouldbeaffectedtowardsMembersof Congresswhovotedforsuchaproposal.
