E VERNOTE : N OTE -T AKING ON THE G O

WHAT IS IT?
If youre looking for an application to take and share notes between your mobile device and PC, you may want to consider Evernote. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders--and makes these notes completely searchable, whether you are at home, at work, or on the go. Evernote is available on a number of operating system platforms (including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Chrome OS, Android, iOS and WebOS), and also offers online synchronization and backup services.

Evernote is available in a Free version and a Premium version. The Free version is ad-supported, has monthly usage limitations, and displays a "usage" meter. The premium service currently costs $5 per month or $45 per year, and offers additional functionality, including improved customer support, increased upload limits (currently 1,000 MB/month), and version history.

This tool is well received in the market and may be useful to you in certain situations. Because it is a web based service, security procedures are not known so it should only be used to store or access information that has been identified as low risk. It is not an HBS-supported application and in depth product support is provided by the software developer.

WHAT ARE ITS STRENGTHS?

Any time, any where access: Notes that you create are synchronized on the Evernote servers and made available to any computer or mobile device where youve installed Evernote. You can also acce ss your notes from any browser. Versatile Notetaking: As noted above, you can create text-based notes as well as record audio-clips. Additionally, Evernote makes images containing printed or handwritten text searchable. (As a Premium user, your images get processed faster.) Note Sharing: Evernote allows you to share notes via email, Facebook, Twitter, or by providing a URL to those who you wish to share with. You can also share entire notebooks with individuals who also use Evernote. Offline Use: Evernote will allow you to create and edit notes while your device is offline, and will synchronize the changes when it next connects.

Searchable: Evernote enables you to search through your notes in the same manner that you would search through a Word document or a web page.

WHAT SUPPORT CAN I EXPECT?

HBS support: Technology Support Services can assist with downloading and installing the software and assist with basic questions regarding use. Limited Support: Because this is a third party application, in depth product support is provided by the software developer, not HBS. Evernotes web site indicates that they give preferential treatment to Prem ium Accounts, and they do not provide phone-based support. Purchase: Individuals must purchase the software via their mobile devices respective app store (Apple App Store, Android Market, Amazo n AppStore for Android, or Blackberry AppWorld). This software cannot be purchased by the Information Technology team.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?

Security: While Evernote has policies intended to protect the security of your information and takes reasonable precautions to protect it, they state that they cannot ensure the security of information you transmit to them. Therefore, Evernote should only be used to store or access information that has been identified as low risk, and must not be used for any High Risk Confidential information or any other information that is governed by law or regulatory requirements. Synchronization may Overwrite Changes: If you make changes from two separate devices, it is possible that the changes will not be merged. The copy which is saved last will overwrite the other. Unlike other applications, Evernote will not create a second copy.
