Introduction
The Bachelor of Engineering in Network and Software Engineering is a comprehensive four-year degree designed to meet the criteria for accreditation as a professional engineer with Engineers Australia (EA). The course provides professional education in core areas of network and software engineering and concentrates on the development of analysis, network design, network security, programming skills, communication theory, and wireless communications and on the societal and business context of network and software systems. In their last two years, students acquire in-depth knowledge of network communications and software engineering as well as a broad coverage of specialist technical subjects such as: network operating systems, ubiquitous computing, real-time control, wireless communications, network and computer security, web design and programming, large scale software systems, embedded systems and RFID technology. It is designed to enable students to commence tailoring the course to suit their own needs after their second year. The course is completed with an industry-oriented engineering project. Career prospects for Network Communications and Software Engineers are good, both in Australia and overseas. Learning Outcomes:

- develop a functional specification from an initial brief, evaluate the various design options available to meet a given set of specifications, formulate a final design specification, and implement and test the preferred option; - determine which principles in the sciences and engineering are appropriate to use in the solution of complex technological problems in the field of information engineering; - assess the impact of an engineering project on the social and physical environment; - manage the human, physical and financial resources required to implement or maintain a complex engineering project; - transfer and enhance the knowledge and skills acquired during the course to new or complementary areas of engineering and technology through lifelong learning; - communicate effectively in oral and written form; - design, implement and maintain large software systems, following contemporary software engineering practices; - understand and participate in the processes of business analysis of systems; - apply relevant theories and techniques to the analysis and solution of problems in information technology; - apply their particular engineering strengths to the design, construction and maintenance of hardware, software, and systems in all sizes of computer installations, from the large mainframe and client-server systems encountered in the Commonwealth Public Service and its supporting organisations, to embedded microprocessors dedicated to controlling a single appliance or process; - apply their particular engineering strengths to the design, construction and maintenance of systems in network communications and software engineering, such as those encountered in the Commonwealth Public Service, major telecommunications companies and national and international standard electronics and electrical industry companies.
