Reading Enrichment (Extend) -students first experiences with reading should be joyful, and as students grow, they should

continue to enjoy times spent reading and listening to books in the company of classmates. -the more pleasurable these experiences, the more likely it is that students will want to read independently and remain lifelong readers. -enrichment activities are designed to provide children with challenging lessons ad activities to increase their reading abilities using games, puzzles, riddles, contests and stories. -activities include lesson in word skills, vocabulary, study skills, comprehension, and literary forms. SEM-R -the shooolwide enrichment model reading framework (SEM-R) is an instance of an enrichment based reading program designed to: -stimulate interest in and enjoyment of reading -promote and develop higher reading achievement -improve self-regulation and automaticity in reading -encourage students to select high-interest books that are slightly higher to moderate above their current reading levels -create independent, lifelong readers -purpose for having remedial and enrichment activities -to help pupils to overcome gaps and errors in their English, especially fossilized errors -to reactivate, consolidate, clarify and review previous knowledge -to distinguish between general and individual problems -to help pupils to overcome their mistakes -to monitor pupils errors, mistakes, and slips -to evaluate effectiveness of the T&L process and materials Enrichment activities & Remedial activities -specific functions -to assist pupils to master certain skills -to be used after lesson is finished -Materials suit the pupils level

Enrichment activities -measure pupils understanding of certain topics or skills -could be combination of more one skills

Remedial activities -will be given to weak pupils (to help them with certain skills or topic) -only one skill to be drilled

REMEDIAL READING Defining remedial reading -remedial reading lessons are often used as a way to help struggling students bring their reading skills up to grade level -at school, students who are behind may be pulled from class for specialized instruction -remedial reading lessons are typically necessary for children with a learning disability, such as dyslexia -there are need to identify why the children is struggling before deciding on the best way to provide instruction -reading comprehension is the ability to analyse and understand books and other texts -to help the child work on this skills, do comprehension exercises before, during and after reading -before reading a text with pictures, take the child on a picture walk -encourage him to notice details in the pictures and make predictions about the story -while reading the story, encourage the child to use the pictures when answering comprehension questions asked -ask questions about the action of the characters and the tone of the narrative -in order for this techniques to work, make sure you choose books with pictures that closely match the text

Reading Fluency -sight words are words that are instantly recognizable -memorizing these words may increase the childs reading fluency because it decreases the number of words that are unfamiliar to him -write words like the and is on flashcard and go over them with the child every day -after reading, discuss the childs thoughts about the ending. -how did it make the child feel? -relating the childs personal feelings and memories to a text can help her to understand elements such as plot and character motivation

-if the child is struggling with specific types of words, give her a lesson on the specific vowel and consonant combinations that are consistently challenging -for example, if the child cant distinguish between hard and soft consonants, write a number of words like kick , cod, knee and cheese on a flashcards and review their sounds

Addressing Reading Disabilities -if the child is dyslexic, or suffers from any other disability, consider contracting a child psychologist or reading expert to get a detailed report on what needs to be done to help the child -dyslexia creates confusion for readers -if the child is dyslexic, its possible that letters and words appear to be out if order. -lines of text can be distracting from other lines of text -by using a piece of paper to block out the other lines of text, the child may be able to focus on one line at a time

Remedial Reading Programme A few suggestions: -assess the students that are in the remedial reading program -the easiest way to figure out a students reading level is to do a running record on a levelled book the student is reading -group your remedial reading students by reading level if possible -plan the daily lessons -remedial reading does not just include reading. Think of it as all language arts because spelling and writing are connected with reading -introduce a book and read it through with students a few times before they read it on their own -guided reading is a wonderful tool to use when teaching remedial reading students
