Network Design for Somewhere High School

Anna Newton Spring 2012 EDTC 625

I was chosen to design a plan for hardware and support for a 30-workstation computer lab for Somewhere High School as a technology specialist, as well as a teacher in the new school. Somewhere High School is a new school within the Somewhere Public School District in Somewhere, Maryland. My task is to set up one 30 workstation computer lab for the 400 students in the building with a budget of $45,000.00. Below is the detailed budget summary. I list what will be purchased, the price, the amount to be bought, and the reasons for the purchase.

Budget Summary:

Instructional Purpose:

Network Design Project 2012

There are many aspects of the instructional purpose for the computing facility. First of all, this computer lab will be a general purpose lab for student use, teacher-led classroom instruction, or faculty professional development. Second, the lab is set-up for students to work in groups on research projects, multimedia productions, and teleconferencing. These purposes will help fulfill the teachers goals to help students become more active in the global learning community. The lab will need to be reserved for use in order to make it fair for the entire faculty. Layout: I chose a trapezoid layout for the computer lab. Two desks will be placed together to create a trapezoid. Six students can work at each trapezoid. There is a riser placed on top of each trapezoid set in order to give more space for various peripherals, such as the webcams. I chose the trapezoid layout because each of these clusters of students will be able to work together on group assignments easily or individually because there is plenty of space beside them to place their work on their desks. The seventh trapezoid will serve as the teachers desk and a place to put the printer for easy access for everyone. All of the pieces of furniture is the appropriate size for high school students. Desktop Computers: In this lab are 31 desktop computers, one computer will be for the teacher and there are 30 student computers. The computers I decided to pick were the Dell OptiPlex 390 Desktop with monitor. Each computer features a 3.1 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, a 23 inch wide monitor, a DVD-R drive, speakers, keyboard, and mouse. Each computer comes preloaded with Windows 7 Professional and Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 software package. I decided that the inclusion of all of these items in one was preferential over more customized computers because it keeps the price down to a minimum, while having a well made computer that can perform all of the tasks and needs of the students and the teachers. Each trapezoid of computers will share two surge protectors to protect from power outages and surges. Peripherals: Several peripherals were purchased to help meet the instructional purpose of the computing facility. I decided to purchase a wireless projector, headphones with microphones, a printer/copier/scanner, web cameras, and camcorders for use in and outside the computing facility. The wireless projector will allow the teacher to show students what is on the teachers computer screen. This can be used in various ways. The teacher can lead instruction by showing how to complete a task step by step from their computer, the class can have a discussion with a class or guest speaker from across the globe, and they can present multimedia projects using this wireless projector. The school will provide a whiteboard and pull-down screen to project on. Headphones with microphones were purchased to allow student to listen and record their voices 5|Page

without interrupting others around them. These headphones can be used in conjunction with the webcams purchased for each of the computers. Individual webcams were purchased to allow students to teleconference with someone individually. One webcam was also purchased for the class/teacher to conduct class teleconferences. A printer that has the capability to print in black and white and in color, as well as scan and copy documents will also be purchased. I decided to get one printer to cut down one costs. The one downside is that it will be the only one so the IT staff will need to maintain it to keep it running properly. Teachers will need to monitor students so they do not print unnecessarily. This printer also allows teachers and students to bring in camera SD cards to download/print pictures. Finally camcorders were purchased to allow students to create videos for multimedia projects. Five were purchased to allow multiple groups to record all at the same time. Software:

Network Design Project 2012

Several pieces of software programs were chosen to help meet the instructional needs and purpose of the computing facility. Microsoft Office has all of the basic programs that every subject uses, such as Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Adobe Acrobat 10 was purchased to allow students to view, create, and edit PDF files. Dreamweaver was also purchased to allow students to create their own websites from scratch. Teachers may assign web design projects Fireworks was purchased to allow teachers and students to create and edit images that can be used in various multimedia projects. Finally the MegaMeeting.com Web conferencing program was also purchased to allow teachers and students to interact with other classrooms across the globe, and have discussions guest speakers that cannot come to the school. All of these programs can help students become more active members in the global learning community. Network & Server hardware: The computer lab is run by a Dell PowerEdge T310 server, which will be the file, print, DHCP, and authentication server. The server has a 2.4 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive. Using one server to control all of these functions addresses what Terrill (2006) calls a multi-function server. According to Terrill (2006), supporters of the multi-function server philosophy argue that putting several services on a single computer can make technical and economic sense (p. 56). Multi-servers do have some weaknesses though. The machine can get overloaded and become sluggish if it is doing too much. If the server crashes, or if it is compromised by a virus or malware, the whole lab goes down rather than just one function. Connectivity for the lab runs through several Netgear 8-port intelligent switches, and all hardware is connected to the switch using CAT-6e cabling. The school will be a part of the school network. Security: Security is important to maintain the safety of our students and our equipment of the school. Two programs will be purchased to help achieve this goal, McAfee and CyberPatrol 6|Page

SiteSURV Web Filtering. McAfee SaaS Endpoint protection was purchased for one year for the entire lab. This will need to be renewed each year. The SaaS Endpoint protection software will protect the computers and server from viruses, spyware, adware, and other potentially harmful programs that would compromise or slow our system. The software also has a firewall for each computer, which helps to block hackers and others from accessing our system and potentially reaching sensitive data. Finally, SaaS Endpoint protection also has MacAfee Site Advisor, which can warn students and teachers of potentially harmful websites before they access them. CyberPatrol SiteSURV Web Filtering will also be purchased to help protect our students and our computing facility. This software will allow the school/IT specialists manage internet access. Internet access is managed through a portal site that can be viewed from any computer that has an Internet connection. The Control Panel on the portal site allows the manager to add and manage access points, select and create filtering profiles by category, create a custom Blocked/Allow list of web sites, and view activity graphs and charts. All of these options will make sure students are going to age appropriate and safe websites and also help prevent access to websites that may be harmful to the computers. Staffing for Maintenance: The Somewhere Public School District provides full-technology specialists the schools. The salaries of the IT staff and helpers are an in-kind contribution. This means that the Somewhere Public School District will provide trouble-shooting and maintenance needed for the computer lab without charging the school. However, these specialists will not be able come every day. To make sure the lab is always available for the staff to use, I have volunteered to help maintain the computer lab with a group of student interns. In exchange for my services as a technology specialist, I will teach four classes instead of six, instead of a stipend/salary for my services (Somewhere High School is on a block schedule). I will use those blocks to maintain the computer lab and work with the student interns to keep the facility and equipment running properly so all the teachers can use the lab as planned.
