The GMAT Information Bulletin is prepared for people who will take the Graduate Management Admission Test to apply for admission to graduate schools of management. The policies and procedures described in this edition of the Bulletin apply to all aspects of the GMAT program, effective July 1, 1999. Fees are subject to change without notice. The GMAT is sponsored and directed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a global organization of 131 graduate schools of business. GMAC creates awareness of and extends access to management education. Educational Testing Service (ETS) consults with the GMAC about general policy, develops test material, administers the test, and conducts research to improve the test. Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc., administers the computer-adaptive GMAT at Sylvan Technology Centers.

The GMAT
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) measures general verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that are developed over a long period of time. It is designed to help graduate schools of business assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. GMAT scores are used by nearly 1,300 graduate management programs throughout the world, and about 850 schools require GMAT scores from each applicant. GMAT scores are only one predictor of academic performance in the first year of graduate management school. The GMAT does not presuppose any specific knowledge of business or other specific content areas. It does not measure achievement in any particular subject area. International students should note that the GMAT is entirely in English and all instructions are provided in English.
The GMAT
The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that is available, year-round, at test centers throughout the world. However, the GMAT program recognizes the fact that the GMAT CAT is not available in a limited number of countries. If you are located in a country that does not currently offer the GMAT CAT and you cannot travel to another country to take the test, please contact us, by using any of the communication methods listed in the Customer Service section on page 6, and advise us of your circumstances. It may be possible to make arrangements to open a supplementary test center in your country. WHAT IS A COMPUTER-ADAPTIVE TEST?
In a computer-adaptive test, the computer screen displays one question at a time, which is chosen from a very large pool of questions categorized by content and difficulty. The first question is always of medium difficulty. The selection of each question thereafter is determined by your responses to all previous questions. In other words, the CAT adjusts to your ability level youll get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you. The CAT requires you to enter an answer for each question, and you may not return to or change your response to any previously answered question. If you guess a correct answer or answer a question incorrectly by mistake, your answers to subsequent questions will lead you back to questions that are at the appropriate level of difficulty for you.
Requests must be received no later than three days following your test date.

Because scores that are more than five years old present special interpretation problems, many institutions will not accept them. At your request, the GMAT program will release scores for tests you took between October 1979 and June 1994 but will send with the score report a statement indicating the special nature of the scores. Some institutions may require applicants to take the GMAT again and supply more current scores. All data retained at ETS are subject to GMAC policies on confidentiality described in this Bulletin. GMAT scores are measurement information. They are not the property of the examinee, but the use, reporting, and cancellation of scores are subject to various rights and restrictions as indicated in this Bulletin. HOW SCHOOLS USE AND INTERPRET SCORES GMAT scores have two important characteristics: They are reliable measures of certain developed skills that have been found to be important in the study of management at the graduate level. In repeated studies, GMAT scores have been consistently found to be good, although imperfect, predictors of academic success in the first year of study at graduate schools of management. Unlike undergraduate averages, which vary in their meaning according to the grading standards of each institution, GMAT scores are based on the same standard for all examinees. Graduate Schools of Management: The Graduate Management Admission Council has published guidelines for the use of GMAT scores. The guidelines are provided to all graduate management schools that use GMAT scores and are included on page 30. Since the test does not measure all the characteristics related to success in graduate school, admissions officers use GMAT scores as one kind of information about an applicant. Evidence indicates that the undergraduate record is generally at least as good a predictor of success as the test scores, and most schools give it as much weight as the scores. An admissions officer may even discount mediocre test scores when they are counterbalanced by good grades from an institution in which he or she has confidence. Information about your character, your interest in management, and your willingness to apply yourself as obtained from your application, interviews, and letters of recommendation is also considered. Each school evaluates the scores in its own way; there are no set passing or failing scores. Your performance can be related to that of the original 1954 scales, the total testing population for the past three years (percentile scores), or others applying to the same school (local norms). Undergraduate Institutions: Your undergraduate adviser receives your scores if you so designate and if your school participates in the Undergraduate Roster Service. By evaluating your scores and your undergraduate record and average, your adviser can make sound recommendations about your opportunities for graduate study in management and may be able to suggest schools that would be the most suitable for you. If you are unsure whether to have your scores sent to your undergraduate institution, check with your undergraduate counseling office. RESCORING SERVICE FOR ESSAYS If you have reason to believe that your essay scores are not accurate, you may request that your essays be rescored. For a fee of $45 your essays will be rescored by independent readers. Requests for rescoring must be made within six months of your test date. A request received more than six months after the test date will not be honored. The multiple-choice sections of the test cannot be rescored. You may request this service by either telephone or fax if paying by credit card. Otherwise, enclose a check made payable to ETS-GMAT with your GMAT registration/identification number, your date of birth, and your Social Security number (if you included it in your biographical information). Also, explain why you feel rescoring is necessary. Mail your request to GMAT, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6102, Princeton, NJ 08541-6102 and on your letter note: Attention: GMAT Rescoring Service. Rescoring may result in increases or decreases in your scores. If there is a discrepancy between the original and the later scores, ETS rescoring results will be final. Revised results will be sent to you and the management schools you designated. You will be notified of the results of the rescoring within about three weeks of receipt of your request at ETS. GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION SEARCH SERVICESM (GMASSSM) The Graduate Management Admission Search Service helps you become aware of full-time and part-time graduate programs, admissions procedures, and financial aid opportunities offered by institutions. Test takers are chosen to receive a particular schools mailings because their background characteristics match those the schools look for in applicants for admission. You are automatically included in GMASS unless you notify ETS no later than three days following your test date. You may remove your name by e-mailing gmass@ets.org, faxing (609) 771-7088, or calling (609) 771-7064.

Test-taking Suggestions
To use the allotted time wisely, familiarize yourself with the mechanics of the test and the kinds of materials, questions, and directions in the test. Become familiar with the formats and requirements of each section of the test. Read all test directions carefully. The directions explain exactly what is required in order to answer each question type. To review directions during the test, click on the Help icon. Read each question carefully and thoroughly. Before answering a question, determine exactly what is being asked. Never skim a question or the possible answers; skimming may cause you to miss important information or nuances. If you do not know the answer or if the question is too time-consuming, guess. Confirm your answer only when you are certain you are ready to move on to the next question. You cannot omit questions or go back and change answers. Pace yourself so that you have enough time to answer every question. Pay attention to the number of questions and the amount of time remaining during your testing session (see chart on this page). On average, you have 13/ 4 minutes for each verbal question and 2 minutes for each quantitative question. (If you do not finish in the allotted time, you will still get a score as long as youve worked on every section.) Your score will depend on the statistical characteristics of the questions presented to you, your answers to those questions, and the number of questions you answer. To prepare for the Analytical Writing Assessment, practice with the sample writing topics in this Bulletin. Additional topics are included on the MBA Explorer Web site and in The Official Guide for GMAT Review. These topics may appear in your actual GMAT. You will have 30 minutes to compose each essay using the word processor, which you can practice on before you start the test (see Tutorials below).
Tutorials
You will be provided with everything you need to know about taking a computer-adaptive test when you arrive at the test center. You will have an opportunity to complete tutorials before beginning the actual test. The interactive tutorials will allow you to review the testing tools you will use for responding to the questions, both multiple-choice and essay, as well as gain experience using a mouse and scrolling. You will have plenty of time to become familiar with the computer-based testing environment before starting the test. The tutorials can also be found on POWERPREP Software.
Verbal (Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, & Sentence Correction) 41 Questions Total Time
The quantitative section of the GMAT measures basic mathematical skills and understanding of elementary concepts, and the ability to reason quantitatively, solve quantitative problems, and interpret graphic data. The verbal section of the test measures the ability to understand and evaluate what is read and to recognize basic conventions of standard written English. The analytical writing section of the test measures the ability to think critically and communicate complex ideas through writing. Individual test questions are reviewed to eliminate language, symbols, or content considered to be potentially offensive or inappropriate for major subgroups of the testtaking population or that serve to perpetuate any negative attitude about these subgroups. In addition, statistical procedures are applied to help identify questions that may be unfair.

Sample Questions
The sample questions that follow will familiarize you with the types of questions in the test. Although the sample questions represent the general nature of the test, it is possible that a type of question not illustrated may appear in the test or that material illustrated may not appear. Directions are similar to those in the test. On the GMAT CAT, you will not see lettered answer choices. They are presented here for your use with the answer key on page 27.
SAMPLE QUESTIONS 1. The passage provides information to support which of the following generalizations? (A) Observations of animals physiological behavior in the wild are not reliable unless verified by laboratory studies. (B) It is generally less difficult to observe the physiological behavior of an animal in the wild than in the laboratory. (C) The level of lactic acid in an animals blood is likely to be higher when it is searching for prey than when it is evading predators. (D) The level of lactic acid in an animals blood is likely to be lowest during those periods in which it experiences oxygen deprivation. (E) The physiological behavior of animals in a laboratory setting is not always consistent with their physiological behavior in the wild. 2. It can be inferred from the passage that by describing the Weddell seal as preparing for the worst (lines 36-37), biologists mean that it (A) prepares to remain underwater for no longer than twenty minutes (B) exhibits physiological behavior similar to that which characterizes dives in which it heads directly for its prey (C) exhibits physiological behavior similar to that which characterizes its longest dives in the wild (D) begins to exhibit predatory behavior (E) clears the lactic acid from its blood before attempting to dive 3. The passage suggests that during laboratory dives, the pH of the Weddell seals blood is not adversely affected by the production of lactic acid because (A) only those organs that are essential to the seals ability to navigate underwater revert to an anaerobic mechanism (B) the seal typically reverts to an anaerobic metabolism only at the very end of the dive (C) organs that revert to an anaerobic metabolism are temporarily isolated from the seals bloodstream (D) oxygen continues to be supplied to organs that clear lactic acid from the seals bloodstream (E) the seal remains submerged for only short periods of time
Multiple-Choice Questions
READING COMPREHENSION The questions in this group are based on the content of a passage. After reading the passage, choose the best answer to each question. Answer all questions following the passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. One sample reading passage follows. SAMPLE PASSAGE Studies of the Weddell seal in the laboratory have described the physiological mechanisms that allow the seal to cope with the extreme oxygen deprivation that occurs during its longest Line dives, which can extend 500 meters below the oceans surface (5) and last for over 70 minutes. Recent field studies, however, suggest that during more typical dives in the wild, this seals physiological behavior is different. In the laboratory, when the seal dives below the surface of the water and stops breathing, its heart beats more slowly, (10) requiring less oxygen, and its arteries become constricted, ensuring that the seals blood remains concentrated near those organs most crucial to its ability to navigate underwater. The seal essentially shuts off the flow of blood to other organs, which either stop functioning until the seal surfaces or switch (15) to an anaerobic (oxygen-independent) metabolism. The latter results in the production of large amounts of lactic acid which can adversely affect the pH of the seals blood, but since the anaerobic metabolism occurs only in those tissues which have been isolated from the seals blood supply, the lactic acid is (20) released into the seals blood only after the seal surfaces, when the lungs, liver, and other organs quickly clear the acid from the seals bloodstream. Recent field studies, however, reveal that on dives in the wild, the seal usually heads directly for its prey and returns to (25) the surface in less than twenty minutes. The absence of high levels of lactic acid in the seals blood after such dives suggests that during them, the seals organs do not resort to the anaerobic metabolism observed in the laboratory, but are supplied with oxygen from the blood. The seals longer excur(30) sions underwater, during which it appears to be either exploring distant routes or evading a predator, do evoke the diving response seen in the laboratory. But why do the seals laboratory dives always evoke this response, regardless of their length or depth? Some biologists speculate that because in (35) laboratory dives the seal is forcibly submerged, it does not know how long it will remain underwater and so prepares for the worst.

4. Which of the following best summarizes the main point of the passage? (A) Recent field studies have indicated that descriptions of the physiological behavior of the Weddell seal during laboratory dives are not applicable to its most typical dives in the wild. (B) The Weddell seal has developed a number of unique mechanisms that enable it to remain submerged at depths of up to 500 meters for up to 70 minutes. (C) The results of recent field studies have made it necessary for biologists to revise previous perceptions of how the Weddell seal behaves physiologically during its longest dives in the wild. (D) Biologists speculate that laboratory studies of the physiological behavior of seals during dives lasting more than twenty minutes would be more accurate if the seals were not forcibly submerged. (E) How the Weddell seal responds to oxygen deprivation during its longest dives appears to depend on whether the seal is searching for prey or avoiding predators during such dives. 5. According to the author, which of the following is true of the laboratory studies mentioned in line 1? (A) They fail to explain how the seal is able to tolerate the increased production of lactic acid by organs that revert to an anaerobic metabolism during its longest dives in the wild. (B) They present an oversimplified account of mechanisms that the Weddell seal relies on during its longest dives in the wild. (C) They provide evidence that undermines the view that the Weddell seal relies on an anaerobic metabolism during its most typical dives in the wild. (D) They are based on the assumption that Weddell seals rarely spend more than twenty minutes underwater on a typical dive in the wild. (E) They provide an accurate account of the physiological behavior of Weddell seals during those dives in the wild in which they are either evading predators or exploring distant routes. 6. The passage suggests that because Weddell seals are forcibly submerged during laboratory dives, they do which of the following? (A) Exhibit the physiological responses that are characteristic of dives in the wild that last less than twenty minutes. (B) Exhibit the physiological responses that are characteristic of the longer dives they undertake in the wild. (C) Cope with oxygen deprivation less effectively than they do on typical dives in the wild. (D) Produce smaller amounts of lactic acid than they do on typical dives in the wild. (E) Navigate less effectively than they do on typical dives in the wild.
CRITICAL REASONING For this question, select the best of the answer choices given. 7. There are fundamentally two possible changes in an economy that will each cause inflation unless other compensating changes also occur. These changes are either reductions in the supply of goods and services or increases in demand. In a prebanking economy the quantity of money available, and hence the level of demand, is equivalent to the quantity of gold available. If the statements above are true, then it is also true that in a prebanking economy (A) any inflation is the result of reductions in the supply of goods and services (B) if other factors in the economy are unchanged, increasing the quantity of gold available will lead to inflation (C) if there is a reduction in the quantity of gold available, then, other things being equal, inflation must result (D) the quantity of goods and services purchasable by a given amount of gold is constant (E) whatever changes in demand occur, there will be compensating changes in the supply of goods and services 8. Which of the following best completes the argument below? One effect of the introduction of the electric refrigerator was a collapse in the market for ice. Formerly householders had bought ice to keep their iceboxes cool and the food stored in the iceboxes fresh. Now the iceboxes cool themselves. Similarly, the introduction of crops genetically engineered to be resistant to pests will -------. (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) increase the size of crop harvests increase the cost of seeds reduce demand for chemical pesticides reduce the value of farmland reduce the number of farmers keeping livestock
9. Since 1975 there has been in the United States a dramatic decline in the incidence of traditional childhood diseases such as measles. This decline has been accompanied by an increased incidence of Petersons disease, a hitherto rare viral infection, among children. Few adults, however, have been affected by the disease. Which of the following, if true, would best help to explain the increased incidence of Petersons disease among children? (A) Hereditary factors determine in part the degree to which a person is susceptible to the virus that causes Petersons disease. (B) The decrease in traditional childhood diseases and the accompanying increase in Petersons disease have not been found in any other country. (C) Children who contract measles develop an immunity to the virus that causes Petersons disease. (D) Persons who did not contract measles in childhood might contract measles in adulthood, in which case the consequences of the disease would generally be more severe. (E) Those who have contracted Petersons disease are at increased risk of contracting chicken pox.

Questions 10-11 are based on the following. An annually conducted, nationwide survey shows a continuing marked decline in the use of illegal drugs by high school seniors over the last three years. 10. Which of the following, if true, casts most doubt on the relevance of the survey results described above for drawing conclusions about illegal drug use in the teen-age population as a whole? (A) Because of cuts in funding, no survey of illegal drug use by high school seniors will be conducted next year. (B) The decline uncovered in the survey has occurred despite the decreasing cost of illegal drugs. (C) Illegal drug use by teen-agers is highest in those areas of the country where teen-agers are least likely to stay in high school for their senior year. (D) Survey participants are more likely now than they were three years ago to describe as heroic people who were addicted to illegal drugs and have been able to quit. (E) The proportion of high school seniors who say that they strongly disapprove of illegal drug use has declined over the last three years. 11. Which of the following, if true, would provide most support for concluding from the survey results described above that the use of illegal drugs by people below the age of 20 is declining? (A) Changes in the level of drug use by high school seniors are seldom matched by changes in the level of drug use by other people below the age of 20. (B) In the past, high school seniors were consistently the population group most likely to use illegal drugs and most likely to use them heavily. (C) The percentage of high school seniors who use illegal drugs is consistently very similar to the percentage of all people below the age of 20 who use illegal drugs. (D) The decline revealed by the surveys is the result of drug education programs specifically targeted at those below the age of 20. (E) The number of those surveyed who admit to having sold illegal drugs has declined even faster than has the number who have used drugs.
12. In elections in the United States, the proper role of the press is to cover only those factors in the campaign which bear on the eventual outcome. Since the outcome is invariably a victory for the candidate of one of the two major parties, the press should not cover the campaigns of candidates of minor parties. The argument above relies on which of the following assumptions? (A) The press has an obligation to cover the candidates of the two major parties because these candidates are likely to be better known to the public than are candidates of minor parties. (B) It is unlikely that there will be more than three candidates in any given race. (C) Many eligible voters do not bother to vote, and of those who do not vote, some would probably have supported a candidate of a minor party. (D) The number of votes cast for a candidate of a minor party is not likely to affect the outcome of the contest between the candidates of the two major parties. (E) Supporters of candidates of minor parties are less likely to be influenced by the press than are supporters of candidates of the two major parties. DATA SUFFICIENCY This data sufficiency problem consists of a question and two statements, labeled (1) and (2), in which certain data are given. You have to decide whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. Using the data given in the statements plus your knowledge of mathematics and everyday facts (such as the number of days in July or the meaning of counterclockwise), you must indicate whether statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked; statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked; BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient; EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked; statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data specific to the problem are needed. Numbers: All numbers used are real numbers. Figures: A figure accompanying a data sufficiency problem will conform to the information given in the question, but will not necessarily conform to the additional information given in statements (1) and (2). Lines shown as straight can be assumed to be straight and lines that appear jagged can also be assumed to be straight. You may assume that the positions of points, angles, regions, etc., exist in the order shown and that angle measures are greater than zero. All figures lie in a plane unless otherwise indicated.

Note:
In data sufficiency problems that ask for the value of a quantity, the data given in the statements are sufficient only when it is possible to determine exactly one numerical value for the quantity.

Explanation: According to statement (1), PQ PR; therefore, PQR is isosceles and y z. Since x + y + z 180, it follows that x + 2y 180. Since statement (1) does not give a value for y, you cannot answer the question using statement (1) alone. According to statement (2), y 40; therefore x + z 140. Since statement (2) does not give a value for z, you cannot answer the question using statement (2) alone. Using both statements together, since x + 2y 180 and the value of y is given, you can find the value of x. Therefore, BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient. The lettered answer choices that follow are for your convenience in using the answer key on page 27. (A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient . (B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient. (C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient. (D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient. (E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient. 13. What was the gross income of Corporation C for year X ? People often complain that products are not made to last. They feel that making products that wear out fairly quickly wastes both natural and human resources. What they fail to see, however, is that such manufacturing practices keep costs down for the consumer and stimulate demand. Which do you find more compelling: the complaint about products that do not last or the response to it? Explain your position using relevant reasons and/or examples drawn from your own experience, observations, or reading.

The following appeared as part of an article in a daily newspaper. The computerized onboard warning system that will be installed in commercial airliners will virtually solve the problem of midair plane collisions. One planes warning system can receive signals from anothers transponder a radio set that signals a planes course in order to determine the likelihood of a collision and recommend evasive action. Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
LIMITED A 3 paper demonstrates some competence in analytical writing skills and in its control of the elements of writing but is plainly flawed. A typical paper in this category exhibits one or more of the following characteristics: does not identify or analyze most of the important features of the argument, although some analysis of the argument is present mainly analyzes tangential or irrelevant matters, or reasons poorly is limited in the logical development and organization of ideas offers support of little relevance and value for points of the critique does not convey meaning clearly contains occasional major errors or frequent minor errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics SERIOUSLY FLAWED A 2 paper demonstrates serious weaknesses in analytical writing skills. A typical paper in this category exhibits one or more of the following characteristics: does not present a critique based on logical analysis, but may instead present the writers own views on the subject does not develop ideas, or is disorganized and illogical provides little, if any, relevant or reasonable support has serious and frequent problems in the use of language and in sentence structure contains numerous errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics that interfere with meaning FUNDAMENTALLY DEFICIENT A 1 paper demonstrates fundamental deficiencies in analytical writing skills. to the particular measures are appropriate for optimizing the prediction of performance in the program. 4. Avoid the use of cutoff scores. The use of arbitrary cutoff scores (below which no applicant will be considered for admission) is strongly discouraged, primarily for the reasons cited in the introduction to these guidelines. Distinctions based on score differences not substantial enough to be reliable should be avoided. (For information about reliability, see the GMAT Examinee Score Interpretation Guide.) Cutoff scores should be used only if there is clear empirical evidence that a large proportion of the applicants scoring below the cutoff scores have substantial difficulty doing satisfactory graduate work. In addition, it is incumbent on the school to demonstrate that the use of cutoff scores does not result in the systematic exclusion of members of either sex, of any age or ethnic groups, or of any other relevant groups in the face of other evidence that would indicate their competence or predict their success. 5. Do not compare GMAT scores with those on other tests. GMAT scores cannot be derived from scores on other tests. The GMAT is not intended to be parallel to graduate admission tests offered by other testing programs. 6. Interpret scores of persons with disabilities cautiously. The GMAT is offered with special arrangements to accommodate the needs of examinees with visual, physical, hearing, and learning disabilities. Test scores earned under nonstandard conditions are reported with a special notice that persons with disabilities may be at a disadvantage when taking standardized tests such as the GMAT, even when the test is administered in a manner chosen by the examinee to minimize any adverse effect of his or her disability on test performance. In using these scores, admissions officers should note the usual caution that GMAT scores be considered as only one part of an applicants record. Normally Appropriate Uses of GMAT Scores 1. For selection of applicants for graduate study in management. A persons GMAT scores tell how the person performed on a test designed to measure general verbal and quantitative abilities that are associated with success in the first year of study at graduate schools of management and that have been developed over a long period of time. The scores can be used in conjunction with other information to help estimate performance in a graduate management program. 2. For selection of applicants for financial aid based on academic potential. 3. For counseling and guidance. Undergraduate counselors, if they maintain appropriate records, such as the test scores and undergraduate grade point averages of their students accepted by various graduate management programs, may be able to help students estimate their chances of acceptance at given graduate management schools. Normally Inappropriate Uses of GMAT Scores 1. As a requisite for awarding a degree. The GMAT is designed to measure broadly defined verbal and quantitative skills and is primarily useful for predicting success in graduate management schools. The use of the test for anything other than selection for graduate management study, financial aid awards, or counseling and guidance is to be avoided. 2. As a requirement for employment, for licensing or certification to perform a job, or for job-related rewards (raises, promotions, etc.). For the reasons listed in number 1 above, the use of the GMAT for these purposes is inappropriate. Further, approved score-receiving institutions are not permitted to make score reports available for any of these purposes. 3. As an achievement test. The GMAT is not designed to assess an applicants achievement or knowledge in specific subject areas.
