5. Test Requirements and Quality Assurance
5.1 Inspection and Rejection-While samples may be taken from incoming shipments and checked for
conformance to the requirements of this document by the buyer, the supplier shall accept the responsibility of
making shipments which meet the appropriate specification limits. Shipments may be rejected if they do not
meet specifications.
5.2 QuaIity Acceptance Criteria-Surface imperfections shall meet the requirements outlined in SO 3601-3 for
offset, combined flash, offset and parting line projection, backrind, trimming, flow marks, non-fills, and
indentations.
5.3 SuppIier Inspection Limits-nspection limits that fall within the general specification limits for SAE J515 O-
rings may be established for individual compounds approved under this document. Shipments may be
rejected if they do not meet these supplier inspection limits.
5.4 Certification of QuaIity-ndividual companies may establish certification requirements for O-rings
manufactured from SAE J515 materials.
6. Packing and Marking
6.1 Part Identification Number (PIN) for O-Rings to this SAE Document-O-rings to this SAE document shall
be identified by a part identification number consisting of the following:
a. The standard, J515
b. The ASTM/SAE material type (see 4.1 and Table 1)
c. The size designation code
EXAMPLEFor a 90 durometer nitrile O-ring for a 4 (6 mm) tube end face seal fitting, the ordering code
information would be as shown in Figure 6.
FGURE 6PART DENTFCATON NUMBER (PN) EXAMPLE
7. Notes
7.1 Identification Statement-Use the following statement in test reports, catalogues and sales literature when
electing to comply with this part of SAE J515:
O-rings conform to SAE J515, Specification for Hydraulic O-ring materials properties and sizes for inch and
metric stud ends, face seal fittings, and four screw connections.
7.2 MarginaI Indicia-The change bar (l) located in the left margin is for the convenience of the user in locating
areas where technical revisions have been made to the previous issue of the report. An (R) symbol to the left
of the document title indicates a complete revision of the report.

UNITS
Dimensions are given in millimeters.
Inch dimensions shown below the millimeter conform to ISO 4412-1.
LETTER SYMBOLS
For the purpose of this standard, the following symbols apply:
a) A, B, P, T, L, V, X and Y identify ports in accordance with ISO 9461;
b) F
1
, F
2
, F
3
, F
4

and F
6
identify threaded holes for mounting fasteners; and
c) G

, and G
2
identify location pin holes.
MOUNTING SURFACE IDENTIFICATION CODING
The following prefixes relate to the mounting surface valve type:
C = is the non-return (check) valve
D = is the directional control valve
FB = is the cam-actuated two-stage compensated flow control valve
F, 2F, 3F = are the compensated flow control valves
P = is the pressure control valve (other than the relief valve),
sequence valve, throttle valve and non-return (check) valve.
POC = is the pilot operated valves
R, RP, RV= are the pressure relief valves
TOLERANCES
The following tolerances shall apply, unless otherwise specified in table.
Surface roughness (R
T
)
NOTE: See ISO 4287 and ISO 4288 for further surface roughness tolerances.
Surface Flatness:
0.01 mm over a distance of 100 mm
(.0004 inch over a distance of 4
inches)
NOTE: See ANSI/Y14.5M for further
surface flatness tolerances

Locating Pin Hole: Tolerance for
diameters
NOTE: See figures and table dimensions
The following tolerances shall apply along the x and y
axes with respect to the orgin:

NFPA/T3.5.1 R2-2002
Mounting Surface Description
1) The minimum thread depth is 1.5 times the fastener diameter. The recommended full thread depth is 2D
+ 6 mm to facilitate interchangeability of valves and to reduce the number of fixing screw lengths. The
minimum recommended engagement of mounting fastener thread for ferrous mounting is 1.25 times the
fastener diameter. Coarse pitch metric fasteners are standard for this mounting surface.
2) The dimensions specifying the area within the dashed lines are the minimum dimensions for the
mounting surface. The corners of the rectangle may have a radius smaller than or equal to the thread
diameter of the mounting fastener.
Along each axis the mounting fastener holes are at equal distance to the mounting surface edges.
3) This dimension gives the minimum spacing distance between the valve and adjacent obstructions, for
example, another valve or a wall. This dimension is therefore, the minimum distance from centerline to
centerline of two similar mounting surfaces placed on a manifold block. The mounting fastener holes are
at equal distances to this dimension.
The valve manufacturer's attention is drawn to the fact that no part of the width of the complete valve
assembly shall exceed this dimension.
4) Blind hole in the mounting surface to accommodate the locating pin on the valve. The minimum depth is
4/16.
NOTE: The supplier shall stipulate the maximum working pressure for subplates and manifold blocks.
MOUNTING FASTENER HOLES AND TOLERANCES
Mounting surface dimensions in this standard are based on metric coarse series fasteners and normal
clearance hole sizes, per SO 273, for those fasteners.
Earlier editions of this standard provided for UNC inch series fasteners. Use of such fasteners with the
dimensions in this new edition will require particular attention by valve suppliers to assure integrity of
the port seals. See annex B for illustrations.
IDENTIFICATION STATEMENT
Use the following statement in test reports, catalogs and sales literature when electing to comply with this
standard:
