P L O T S U M M A RY
The story is set towards the end of the French and Indian Wars which were fought between 1756 and 1763 along the border between upper New York State and Canada. The two daughters of Colonel Munro are being escorted to their father at Fort William Henry by Major Duncan Heyward. They are led along a short cut through the forest by the Indian guide, Magua, who wants to kidnap the daughters of Munro in revenge against their father. The party comes upon Hawkeye and his two Mohican companions, Chingachgook and Uncas, in the forest. Hawkeye becomes suspicious when Duncan tells him that Magua appears to have lost the trail. Magua flees into the forest and Hawkeye and the Mohicans lead the party to a cave hidden behind a waterfall. They are discovered there by Magua and a party of Iroquois Indians. Hawkeye and the Mohicans escape, promising to follow and rescue the others, who are taken prisoner. Magua wants to keep Cora prisoner as revenge for the time when Colonel Munro had whipped him. Magua tells Cora that if she goes with him and lives in his lodge, he will free the others, but she refuses. The Iroquois prepare to burn the four prisoners. As the firewood is being stacked around their feet, Hawkeye and the Mohicans attack the Iroquois and rescue the captives. They manage to elude Magua and another band of Iroquois, as well as the French troops, and reach the gates of Fort William Henry. The two women are reunited with their father and the men join the defence of the fort. Colonel Munro is eventually forced to surrender the fort to the French commander, General Montcalm. As the three thousand troops and settlers leave the fort, they are attacked by the Iroquois and massacred. Magua captures Alice and Cora. David Gamut starts to sing. The Indians think he is possessed by spirits and therefore cannot be harmed, so he is able to follow the captives. Hawkeye, the Mohicans, Colonel Munro and Duncan Heyward survive the battle and take up the womens trail. They eventually come upon David Gamut in the forest. He is able to give them information about the villages where the two women are being held. They manage to rescue Alice and proceed to the friendly Delaware Indian village where Cora was left by Magua. Magua comes to the village to claim his prisoners and demands the death of Hawkeye and Uncas. Tamenund, the ancient leader, comes out to judge who is in the right. His decision is that Cora is still legitimately Maguas prisoner and must go with him, but the others are allowed to go free. Uncas organises a war party to rescue Cora. In the subsequent chase and battle both Cora and Uncas are killed. Magua dies when he tries to leap a crevice during his escape. Cora and Uncas are buried side by side by the Indians and Tamenund makes a moving speech about the death of the last of the Mohicans.

The Last of the Mohicans

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

James Fenimore Cooper was born in New Jersey, USA, in l789, twenty-six years after the end of the French and Indian Wars. He was raised on his familys estate near Cooperstown, New York. Coopers father was one of the founders of the town. Many of his novels are set in the area around his home where the battles of the war had been fought. He entered Yale University at the age of thirteen but was expelled for playing a joke on somebody. Subsequently, he sailed as a British seaman and later served in the American navy. After his marriage, Cooper settled down on his family estate as a country landowner and began to write novels. Cooper established the tales of frontier adventure and the sea romance as typically American genres. His second book, The Spy, written in 1821, made him famous in both the USA and Europe. Coopers best known work is a series called The Leatherstocking Tales, named after the leather leg coverings worn by the hero of the books. The first book in the series, The Pioneers, introduced hunter-hero Natty Bumppo. It was followed by The Last of the Mohicans (1826), in which Bumppo is given the Indian nickname Hawkeye, The Prairie (1827), The Pathfinder (1840) and The Deerslayer (1841). These books are all adventure stories that show pioneer and American Indian life as it had been a generation previously. By the time of Coopers death on his estate in 1851, he had written 52 separate works. He was a famous man and was considered Americas first great novelist.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Indians of the Americas are descendants of people who crossed a land bridge, now the Aleutian Islands, from Asia to North America between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. They gradually expanded southwards and eastwards, usually in small tribes. The Indian tribes along the eastern shore, the Algonquin-speaking Delaware, first came into contact with the Europeans and were the first to be destroyed. Warfare and diseases unknown to the Indians caused a severe decrease in the population. Displacement of Indians by white settlers continued until an official government policy of resettling Indians in reservations on undesirable land in the West was instituted. The Iroquois League was a loose confederation of Iroquois-speaking tribes: Mohawks, Oneidas, Senecas, Cayugas, Onondages and later, Tuscaroras. They combined to maintain a military and political presence that held the balance of power between the British and French by allying themselves with one side or the other and occasionally with both. The League successfully prevented European expansion into the important Ohio Valley area until after the French and Indian Wars. The French and Indian Wars (1756-1763) were the last of four wars fought between the British and French forces in North America. These wars coincided with the period of the Seven Years War in Europe. At the time of the French and Indian Wars, there were approximately 12,000 French settlers in North America. Frances main interest was in the fur trade. British settlers numbered 200,000, primarily engaged in agriculture and manufacturing. Both sides wanted to expand into the fertile Ohio Valley region. The decisive battle of the war, which was fought on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec, resulted in the Treaty of Paris, in which France ceded to the British all French territory east of the Mississippi River including Canada and Florida.

SUGGESTIONS
FOR

LEAD-IN ACTIVITIES

In pairs, students ask and answer the following questions. Alternatively, you can ask the questions and elicit the answers from the whole class. (Some suggested answers are provided in italics.) 1. Have you read any books or seen any films about American Indians? Make a list of the things that you know about them. (lived by hunting and fishing, worshipped nature) 2. Think about the title of the book, The Last of the Mohicans. Make some guesses about what you think the book is about. (Indians, death of a tribe) 3. One of the characters in the book is called Hawkeye. Why do you think he has this name? (He has good eyesight. Indian names say something about the person.) 4. The story is set at the end of the French and Indian Wars in the period of French and English colonisation in North America. Why do you think the French and English were fighting over a country with so few people? (They each wanted more land for future settlers. They wanted trading rights with the Indians.)

3. had planned 8. were hiding 13. captives

14. were taken 15. During

C. Accept all logical and grammatically correct answers. Possible points for inclusion: 1. The Last of the Mohicans is an exciting story because it has an interesting setting, a lot of action and some romance. The frontier during the French and Indian Wars is an exciting setting because of the conflict between the customs and beliefs of the Indians and the white men. There is a lot of action in the story, with battles, captures, escapes and rescues. There are also the romances between Duncan and Alice and between Uncas and Cora. 2. Magua blamed the trouble in his life on the white men because they gave him whisky. It caused him to be driven from his people, captured by the Mohawks and enslaved. Later he was adopted into their tribe. When the Mohawks became allies of the English, Magua broke a rule that Colonel Munro had made about drinking whisky in the camp and Colonel Munro had him beaten. Magua wanted vengeance for this. He planned to kidnap the two daughters of Colonel Munro and take them back to his Huron village. He wanted Munro to suffer every day knowing that they were in his power. 3. The forest Indians in the story hunt and fish for food. They carry tomahawks, scalping knives and rifles given to them by the English or French. The French and English also give the Indians whisky, which causes many problems. They paint their faces and bodies to look fierce and the Mohican warriors shave their heads except for the tuft of hair at the top. Tribes can be identified by their dress and weapons and by the symbols they use to decorate their clothes, tools and houses. Healers and magicians help the people when they are ill. They respect the spirits of the dead and they believe that mad people must not be harmed. The dead are buried with honour and respect. Bravery is highly respected even in enemies and cowardice in a warrior is shameful and may be punished by death. Tribes respect each others laws and customs.
