Celebrating the Third Sunday of Easter

In Lectionary Cycle C, our Sunday Gospels are usually taken from the Gospel of Luke. The Gospels for the Easter Season, however, are taken from the Gospel of John. Today's Gospel is one of the post-Resurrection appearances reported by John. Recall that in John's Gospel, Jesus appears first to Mary of Magdala, second to all of the disciples except Thomas, and finally to Thomas and the disciples (which we heard last Sunday). After those appearances, John's Gospel seems to conclude with a reference to other signs that Jesus gave after his Resurrection, which have not been recorded. Because it follows this apparent conclusion, most scholars believe today's Gospel passage (and all of John 21) to have been an addition to John's original text. Because there are significant differences between this report and the other appearances described in John's Gospel, it is quite likely that this story is from a different source. There are details in the story that recall Jesus' call to Simon Peter and the other fishermen as well as the miraculous catch of fish (found in the Gospel of Luke, with parallels in the other Synoptic Gospels). The end of the chapter, where Jesus asks Peter three times whether he loves him, most likely is meant to represent the reconciliation that occurred between the community represented by John's Gospel with the larger Christian community represented by Peter. This Gospel reading is a rich and textured story that speaks of Jesus' presence in the Eucharist and our commission to serve others as Jesus did. Last week we heard that Jesus appeared to the gathered disciples in a locked room, probably in Jerusalem. In today's Gospel, the disciples are no longer in Jerusalem; they are in Galilee, returning to their work of fishing. Simon Peter is still presented in the role of leader: when he announces that he is going fishing, the other disciples follow. They spend the night fishing but are unsuccessful. Jesus calls to them from the shore, but just as when Jesus first appeared to Mary of Magdala, the disciples do not recognize him immediately. Still, they follow the stranger's instructions and bring in a large haul of fish. It is at this point that one of the disciples (the disciple whom Jesus loved) realizes that Jesus is appearing to them. Upon hearing this news, Simon Peter leads the way again, jumping from the boat and swimming to shore. The other disciples follow in the boat, dragging the fish. The disciples have brought to shore a tremendous catch of fish that Jesus has directed them to find. But once on the shore, they see that Jesus has already prepared fish and bread on a charcoal fire. Jesus directs the disciples to bring their catch of fish as well. Jesus is host at the meal that follows, feeding the disciples the bread and fish. In this detail we see allusions to the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and the fishes told in John 6. There are also allusions in the Gospel to our gathering for the celebration of the Mass. In the Eucharist, we too are fed by Jesus in the bread and wine that have become his very Body and Blood. We also find in this story insight about the Presentation of the Gifts at Mass. The gifts we bring to the altar, bread and wine, are made from gifts that God gave first to us: grain and grapes, the fruit of the earth. God has no need of anything further. Yet God accepts the offering we bringbread and wine, the work of human handsand transforms our offering into the gift of his very presence. After the meal, Jesus directs himself to Simon Peter. The community of John's Gospel probably looked down on Peter because of his denial of Jesus. This dialogue with Simon Peter is a reversal of Peter's three denials. Peter is forgiven. Having been restored to friendship with Jesus, Simon Peter is sent on a mission. Feed my lambs . . . Tend my sheep . . . Feed my sheep. These commands indicate that Peter is to be as Jesus, even unto sacrificing for the flock. As Jesus has fed Peter in this meal and as Jesus feeds us in the Eucharist, so he also sends us to follow him, asking that we offer our lives in service and sacrifice. Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor
By Kurt Jensen Catholic News Service NEW YORK (CNS) -- The stereotyped characters and windup plot of "Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor" (Lionsgate) put the stale in morality tale. Only Perry's most devoted fans will likely enjoy this story of Judith (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and her struggle -- not, admittedly, an especially heroic one -- with adultery. No one actually listens to Judith. Instead, they talk at her -- endlessly. As in all of Perry's stories, however, there's a stiff moral spine. In this instance, the ethical backbone derives from Judith's churchgoing youth in the rural South, which was overseen by her devoted single mother Sarah (Ella Joyce), a minister. With a master's degree in counseling and hoping to launch her own marriage-counseling firm, Judith is married to her childhood sweetheart, stalwart but dull Brice (Lance Gross). They live in Washington, where Brice is a pharmacist at a small independent drugstore; Judith is stuck working for a high-end dating service for wealthy men. Judith is ordered by boss Janice (Vanessa Williams) to cultivate Harley (Robbie Jones), a high-tech multimillionaire Janice hopes will invest in the firm. Harley is unhappy because he says it's tough "to be able to buy whatever you want, and beg for what you need." He's fascinated that Judith has only ever had one man in her life, and begins a simmering flirtation as they develop a computer program to determine compatibility. He even grills her about her marriage: "Does he challenge you mentally? Does he bring out the best in you?" When Janice orders Judith to accompany Harley on a business trip to New Orleans -- well, there you go. Judith takes on an entirely new personality as a sultry, well-dressed, wine-swilling -- and brazen -- adulteress. It's time for the Rev. Sarah to reappear, lecturing all in her path, including Brice. There's the predictable bickering, and when she learns that Brice has faltered in attending worship services, Sarah proclaims, "You need yo' (behind) whipped with the King James Version!" Moral bearings are righted, as is the pattern in Perry's films, after considerable emotional pain. But it's mostly just talk, talk, talk -- slow moving, and not in the least compelling. The film contains an adultery theme with two nongraphic adulterous encounters, drug use, sexual banter and fleeting crass language. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III -- adults. St. Michaels Parish at Fort Gordon is looking for a dedicated, hardworking person, sensitive to the ways God calls and equips people for mission in daily life, to help the members of our congregation grow in both spirituality and in participation. Positive communication skills, including both quality listening skills and comfort with cold-calling, are a necessity! Ability to maintain open and often communication with parish volunteers. Duties will include, but are not limited to: - Establish and maintain relationships with congregation members and community organizations to assist the congregation in accomplishing its missional responsibilities. - Create and maintain databases of congregational member information such as skills and interests. Such databases may include some or all software such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Publisher. - Establish and oversee recruitment procedures to meet specific group needs for activities and functions of volunteers. - Evaluate the work of volunteers to ensure that work is of appropriate quality and that resources are used effectively. - Assist in the assimilation process of new members. Work with the Parish Life Coordinator to acknowledge, recognize, and support volunteers as well as recommend new directions for ministry. - Help connect members with existing ministries and programs within the congregation. - Report questions, comments, or concerns regularly to the Parish Life Coordinator. - Other duties as assigned by the Pastor and/or Parish Life Coordinator or as deemed necessary. We are looking for a volunteer to coordinate the Care Ministry. This ministry assists parishioners who are sick at home or hospital. The ministry coordinator is responsible for coordinating visits in consultation with the senior pastor and PLC. The coordinator will be willing to visit parishioners who request this assistance, share the Word of God and prayer with them, and offer Holy Communion at the time of visit. Pastoral Visitations
There is simply no place more appropriate than the home for pastors to interact with their parishioners in a personal manner. And this holds true whether such interaction is for the purpose of leading a person to Christ, reclaiming a lost soul, or offering support and guidance. For this reason, our Pastor, Father Joseph would like to start Pastoral Visitations to give parishioners the opportunity of meeting and knowing him. He would like to visit parishioners homes twice a week, so if you are interested in receiving the special visit of our Pastor, please contact the PLC Lola Rivera to schedule a Pastoral visitation @ (706) 791-4829, or plc@saintmichaelparishfg.org. Father Joseph is looking forward to visit your home, talk and pray with you and your family in earnestness and humility.

Confessions
Private confessions at St. Michaels are available for you before Mass on Saturdays 4pm and Sundays at 8am in the confessional box located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, but also face-to-face and by appointment at your convenience. Confessions are available in Spanish when Father Joseph celebrates mass.

Matrimony
Arrangements for marriage preparation should be made at least six months in advance of the proposed date. If there has been a prior marriage that has not been annulled by the Catholic Church, more time may be required. Participation in a marriage preparation workshop/program is required. Initially, all requests of information should be directed to the Catholic Pastor at (267) 243-5861.

Baptism
In order to receive Baptism, parent(s) must be registered and attending Mass. Dates and times of Baptism can ONLY be set after registering for Pre-Baptism class, and talking with a Priest. Baptism and preparation for Baptism must be arranged 30 days in advance. Contact the PLC if you need assistance.

Adoration on Wednesday
Join us for adoration this coming Wednesday at 6:30pm. We meet every week to spend and dedicate an hour in Eucharistic Adoration. This is a great way to increase your faith and help you with your prayer life.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

The RCIA program is the process through which interested adults and older children are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic doctrine and way of life. Contact Kelley Culver if you need assistance at rcia@saintmichaelparishfg.org .

Wedding Anniversary & Marriage Vow Renewal

Send us an email if you are celebrating your wedding anniversary next month. We also encourage you to let us know if you would like to renew your marriage vows at Mass, at least two weeks in advance. Requests can be submitted at: plc@saintmichaelparishfg.org

Writing Checks: When writing checks for our weekend collections, please make sure you write the check to CTOF (Chapel Tithes and Offering Fund) Also remember , if you write a check $250 or above, you may ask for a receipt from the chaplain assistant.

St. Michaels Parish Council Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 7, 2013. The meeting will be at Good Shepherd Chapel (GSC), social room at 5:30 pm.

Mass Intentions
If you would like to offer a Mass for the repose of the soul of a loved one, or any other intention, you are encouraged to use one of our Mass cards from the bulletin board located in the hallway next to the Sacristy. You can also send it to the PLC via email at plc@saintmichaelparishfg.org.

Catechists Needed
We are recruiting catechists for the new CCD year. If you are interested in teaching religious education, please contact us. Experience is not required. We will provide you with the training and teaching resources that you need. We need teachers and substitute teachers for grades PreK through High School. CCD Registration
CCD registration is open throughout the year. Please know that in order to receive the Holy Sacrament of First Communion or Confirmation, children need to attend Religious Education as required. Contact the RE Coordinator Adriana Gramer if you have questions.

Religious Education Coordinator Office Hours
