Get to know your way around the new iPad

Headphone jack This is a standard 3.5mm audio jack found on most devices (including the iPod and iPhone).
Sleep/Wake button Press this button to lock your iPhones screen. (The phone will still receive calls and play music, but the screen itself will be o ). If its already locked, you can press this button and slide a nger across the screen to wake it up.
Retina display The new display has over 3 million pixels (2048 by 1536) and a pixel density of 264 PPI (pixels per inch). Its called retina because the pixels are more densely packed than the average human eye can discern between.
FaceTime camera This camera on the front works with FaceTime video chat so other people can see your face.
Multi-Touch interface Unlike a laptop, the iPad lacks a physical keyboard, instead you interact with the device by tapping and swiping the display.
Home screen The Home screen contains app icons, and folders. Tap an icon to launch an app, while tapping folders reveals the apps contained inside. Swiping left and right on the Home screen displays di erent sets of apps and folders (which you can organise yourself ).
Home button The only physical button on the front of the iPad is this one. Press it to instantly return to the Home screen at any time.

iSight camera This 5-megapixel camera can shoot high-de nition video and still images. Side switch This switch is used by default to lock the rotation (so the iPad stays in horizontal or vertical mode). You can also switch its function in Settings to act as a mute switch for the iPads volume, if you prefer.
Volume buttons These side buttons adjust the iPads volume setting.
Sim card slot The iPad (3G + WiFi) uses a micro-SIM card, which can be inserted and removed using the SIM card tool or a paperclip. The new iPad can connect to regular 3G or faster HSDPA networks, and even the upcoming 4G LTE networks.
Speaker Youll nd the speaker grill on the bottom edge of the iPad. Dock Connector The iPad uses Apples 30-pin dock connector to hook up to your computer and other accessories.

Status symbols let you know whats going on with the new iPad
ike a Macs menu bar, the top of the new iPad screen displays a number of status icons shorthand for various settings and connections. The icons that tell you what phone, Internet or other connection your device is making are visible in the upper left-hand corner, while icons in charge of the devices other functions appear on the right. With the help of this handy guide, you can learn what each symbol actually means.
Signal strength These bars reflect the network and voice signal in your area. They fluctuate between one bar (little to no service) and five (strongest reception). Wi-Fi strength Youll see this fan-shaped symbol if youre connected to a nearby Wi-Fi network. The stronger the local signal is, the larger the array ofbars youll see. Bluetooth Turn on Bluetooth, and youll see this icon. By default, the symbol is gray, but if you make a Bluetooth connection, it will turn blue. VPN If you are connected to a Virtual Private Network (VPN), this icon will appear. Airplane mode If you turn on Airplane mode in Settings, your phone will turn off all Internet and Bluetooth connections, and youll see this icon. While in Airplane mode, you can still use Wi-Fi. Processing icon When your iPad is trying to make a network connection, it says: Searching in the upper-left corner. This circle appears if its syncing something over your network, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Battery status In the upperright corner of your iPad is the battery status icon, which shows how much charge your iPhone battery has. If your battery is charging, youll see a small lightning bolt. Location services When an application such as Maps is using location services on your iPad, this purple pointer will appear to the left of the battery icon. Play button If youre playing an audio track in iTunes, this triangle will appear to the left of the battery icon in the menu bar. If your music is paused, no icon will appear. Alarm clock When you have an alarm set in the Clock app, this small clock appears to the right of the time on the top of your iPad. Lock When your iPad is locked, this lock icon appears on the top of your tablets screen, replacing the time. Orientation lock You can lock your iPad display in Portrait mode by double-clicking the Home button and scrolling to the left in the multitasking bar.

lthough Apple has designed the iPad (and the iPhone, iPod touch) to be simple to learn, sometimes you may want a primer on the basics. Heres a detailed breakdown of all the major Multi-Touch gestures, navigation options, Home screen tips and tricks and multitasking features youll need to master your iOS device.
Gestures and techniques
If youve never before owned a Multi-Touch device from Apple, you may be unfamiliar with crazy phrases like pinch-to-zoom and the difference between flick and swipe. Have no fear: While some of these gestures may have odd names, theyre easy enough to pick up.
Tap: As clicking is to a desktop computer, so is tapping to an iOS device. Tapping is the most common and basic gesture.
Double-tap: Tap an object twice in succession to effect a double-tap. Double-taps are primarily used for zooming in or out on text.
Tap, hold, and drag: For some functions, such as highlighting text, copying and pasting or deleting and moving apps, youll need to tap and hold down on the screen. When you do this on a piece of text, it will highlight in blue, and editing handles vertical lines with blue dots will appear on either side of the highlighted area. You can tap, hold and, while holding down, drag your finger to increase or decrease the selection.
Flick and swipe: Swiping is one of your primary navigational tools. You use a left or right swipe to move through app pages on your Home screen or images in the Photos app; you use an up or down swipe to read text in Safari, iBooks, Newsstand or elsewhere. Its one of the easiest gestures to learn.
Pinch: To zoom in or to open something, place your thumb and index finger, pinched together, on screen and spread them apart. To zoom out, do the reverse.
Rotate: You can even rotate some elements with two or more fingers. Just place two fingers on the screen and make a circular gesture, clockwise or counterclockwise.

ow that youve taken your first step into the iOS world with Multi-Touch gestures, its time to learn how to navigate your new iPad. Well go over where your apps are stored, how to organise them, search for them anddelete them.
When you first turn on your device, youre brought to the Home screen. Here, youll see an assortment of icons grouped into rows, and several more icons grouped in the silver Dock along the bottom of the screen. The Homescreen is where your apps live, and where you can launch them. The Dock. The grey translucent bar along the bottom of your Home screen is called the Dock. If youve tried swiping between app pages, youll notice the icons in the Dock dont change from one app page to the next; this is because the Dock is for the most frequently used apps (up to six apps).
The Home screen
Swipe right on your Home screen until you reach Spotlight. (If youre on the first Home screen page, pressing your Home button also summons the Spotlight screen.) To search, just type your query in the text box at the top. Open and close an app. To open an app, all you have to do is tap its icon. Once its open, you can return to the Home screen at any time by pressing the Home button. Rearrange and delete apps. To rearrange the order of your icons, tap and hold any icon on the Home screen. After a few seconds, all your app icons, including the one youre holding, will start to wiggle, and a small black X will pop up in each icons top-left corner. Once they do this, you can rearrange any apps on the Home screen, or even drag them into or out of the Dock. If youve installed a third-party app you dont want any more, you can tap the X to delete it (you cant delete the apps that came pre-installed on your device). When youre finished, press the Home button, and your icons will stop wiggling and stay in their new location. Use folders. A folder is a group of apps, represented by a single icon, on your Home screen. To create a folder, start by tapping and holding any app icon to enter Edit mode; after the icons begin to wiggle, drag an app on top of another app. When you release the app, youll create a folder, which will open and display both apps. The multitasking bar. Switch between apps by bringing up the multitasking bar and quickly double-press the Home button; a bar below the Dock will rise up with the apps most recently run. To switch to a different app, tap its icon. Multitasking shortcuts. Swipe right on the multitasking bar for further controls: rotation lock, adjust brightness, control music, adjust volume, and access the Music app.

any of the questions people and pundits have spent the past few months obsessing over have been answered but not all. We know it has a nicer screen, a faster processor, better cameras, 4G networking, and voice dictation. Heres a quick primer to all the new features and technology found in the new iPad Retina display. Like the iPhone 4 and 4S, the new iPad has a Retina display a term Apple uses to describe a screen with a high-enough pixel density that you cant discern individual pixels at normal viewing distances. The Retina display for the iPad boasts a resolution of 2048-by-1536 pixels thats over 3.1 million pixels in total at the same 9.7-inch (diagonal) screen size as before.
The new iPad has had a significant power bump
New cameras. The new iPads front camera the one facing you as you use the tablet remains a FaceTime-quality camera with VGA resolution. The back camera, however, has been upgraded significantly. Whereas the iPad 2s back camera could take photos and videos at 720p resolution (1280 by 720, or roughly 0.9 MP), the new iPad sports a 5-megapixel (2592-by-1936 pixels) iSight camera, much like the one in the iPhone 4. Apple says the new camera offers improved sharpness, and it supports auto-exposure, auto-focus, auto-face-detection, auto-exposure lock, auto-focus lock, and (for low-light images) temporal noise reduction. It can record 1080p video, and it uses the iPads improved processing horsepower to provide image stabilization. RAM upgrade. Apples tech specs webpage doesnt include information about the amount of RAM in the new iPad, although our friends over at iFixit (www.ifixit.com) have torn the device apart and discovered that it has 1GB, compared to just 512MB in the iPad 2. The A5X processor. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are both powered by a custom-designed A5 system-on-a-chip processor. The new iPad gets a significant bump in power thanks to a new, dual-core A5X processor, which also contains a quad-core graphics processing unit (GPU). Apple claims the A5Xs graphics performance is four times that of the Tegra 3 chip used in many competing tablets, although the company doesnt indicate the metric its using. In addition, that improved graphics capability lets app

developers increase the level of detail in their apps and take advantage of the new Retina display. 4G LTE wireless. Like its predecessors, the new iPad is available in versions with just Wi-Fi and versions with both Wi-Fi and cellular networking capabilities. But this time around, the cellular models include 4G/LTE wireless, along with additional 3G-network compatibility. That may not mean much to the average person in the UK, because 4G rollout isnt expected to take place until 2013, but the main differences from the previous iPad are the additions of two other faster wireless technologies: HSDPA, and HSPA+, which offer theoretical maximum download speeds of 42 and 21Mbps, respectively, compared with a maximum HSPA download speed of 7.2Mbps on the iPad 2. Bluetooth 4.0. Like the iPhone 4S, the new iPad includes Bluetooth 4.0, the latest version of the Bluetooth standard. Bluetooth 4.0 includes all the features of Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (the version used in the iPad 2), so existing Bluetooth accessories should work fine. But version 4.0 adds a new protocol called Bluetooth low energy, which allows for devices that require much less power to operate and connect. (The folks behind this technology call Bluetooth 4.0-capable devices Smart Ready.) Examples of devices that might take advantage of Bluetooth low energy are exercise and medical devices such as heart-rate and blood-sugar monitors. Bluetooth 4.0 might also be a boon for artists who want to use pressure-sensitive styluses. Battery life. The iPad 2 claimed 10 hours of battery life for Wi-Fi surfing, movie watching, and music listening, or 9 hours of 3G surfing. Despite having a screen and wireless connectivity that use more power, and a more-powerful processor, the new iPad claims to offer identical battery life. Wheres Siri? When Apple introduced the iPhone 4S, it introduced two software features that are often conflated: Siri and dictation. Theres no Siri in the new iPad, but the dictation features have made the move. Just as with the iPhone 4S, the new iPad features a microphone button on its virtual keyboard. Press it and speak, and your words will instantly be translated into written text. Smart Cover. The new model has the same magnetic Smart Cover functionality. The iPad 2 Smart Cover has a different model number, but Apples website claims the new version works with both iPad models. This means that the original Smart Cover models will fit the new iPad, as well.

ne amazing feature on the iPad is that you can use it to send and receive text messages (even on the Wi-Fi version). This is thanks to Messages, an application that lets you exchange text-only SMS (Short Message Service) messages and photos and video MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) messages with other iOS devices. To start a message, tap the Messages app on the Home screen, and then tap the new message icon (a box with a pencil). You can enter a recipients mobile number, type a contacts name (which, as with Mail, brings up a list of contacts that match; choose one by tapping it) or tap the + sign to choose an existing contact from your Contacts list. Make sure you choose the contacts mobile number, or your message wont go anywhere. You can send messages to multiple contacts, but they count as multiple messages, so if youre paying per text message, keep that in mind. Use the on-screen keyboard to type a text message, then tap Send. iMessage is Apples all-in-one replacement for text, group, and MMS messaging sort of. If youre familiar with BlackBerry Messaging, its Apples answer to that approach. In short, its a new, easy-to-use communication platform limited to iOS devices. Unlike regular SMS text messaging, iMessage supports niceties like delivery receipts (to know when your message has been delivered), read receipts (to know when your message has been read) and live typing status (so you can know that your buddy is replying). Note, however, that by default, your iOS device wont tell your contact when youve read his/her message; you must enable that manually. Be careful though: on the iPad you can only send messages to other people using iOS devices (the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch).

s it did with Safari, Apple slimmed down its Mail program for iOS. Mails fast and powerful features make up for the devices lack of a physical keyboard. In this section, youll get to know its best features.
Set up new accounts
When you first set up your device, iTunes will ask if you want to transfer your existing email accounts from your computer. On a Mac, you can transfer accounts from Apple Mail. On a Windows PC, you can transfer account details from Windows Mail, Microsoft Outlook Express or Outlook. If you use a different email program, youll have to enter your account information manually. On the Home screen, tap the Settings button and then select Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Under the Accounts header, tap Add Account. Youll see a screen with buttons for Microsoft Exchange, iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL and Other.
Work with email
Every time you view your Inbox either by tapping it from the Mailboxes screen or by returning to it from another app your device will check that account for new mail. Youll see a preview of each message, including the sender, the time it was sent, the subject line and, if desired, a few lines of text. Unread messages display a blue dot to the left. Mail youve replied to or forwarded to another address will have small indicator arrows to the left of it.
New account The iPad simplifies adding an email account from these services. Tap Other to add an account from a different service provider
You can delete a message, which moves it to the Trash folder, in one of several ways. If you have the email open, simply tap the Trashcan icon at the bottom of the screen. The email message will be sucked into the Trash and the next message will appear. If youre in the list view, on the other hand, you have two options for deleting messages without opening them. The quickest way is to simply swipe your fingertip across the message and tap the Delete button. The second way is to tap the Edit button at the top of the screen, tap unwanted messages, and then tap the Delete button.
Delete messages
Send email
You can send an email message in one of several ways. The easiest is to reply to an existing message by tapping the left-arrow icon at the bottom of the viewing screen. To send a new message to the sender of an existing message, tap the persons name in the From field and then tap Email in the resulting screen. To start a completely fresh email, tap the new message icon (it looks like a box with a pencil) from either the message-viewing or the message-list screen. Once youve entered your subject and message, tap Send.

ew to the iPad is a microphone button on the virtual keyboard, one that looks just like the corresponding icon on the iPhone 4Ss keyboard. You can use that microphone for dictation anywhere the keyboard appears. Getting started with Voice Dictation couldnt be easier, simply start speaking and the iPad will start transcribing your voice into words. Youll be surprised at just how good voice dictation is if you havent used it recently. Its light years ahead of how it used to be a few years ago. Unless you frequently dictate missives, however, reciting your punctuation aloud doesnt feel quite natural. But without it, any time Voice Dictation transcribes what you say, your text will resemble a texting tweens stream of consciousness. Thus, when the iPod asks you what youd like your new message to say, speak like this: Dear Jason comma new paragraph Im working on that Voice Dictation story we discussed comma and I expect it will be ready soon exclamation point
Instructions

Some commonly used dictation instructions that the iPad can handle include: Saying all caps will make the next word uppercase, while all caps on and all caps off toggle caps lock. Saying cap will capitalize a single word, as in: I named my dog cap Cat. Speaking the names of punctuation marks and symbolsampersand, asterisk, open/close parenthesis, em dash, percent, copyright, registered, section, dollar, cent, degree sign will make them appear.
Voice control You can dictate long messages on your iPad by following a few simple rules
Editing text
Tap on the mis-transcribed text, and it becomes editable. You can use the on-screen keyboard to make corrections, and tidy up text. Even better: when the on-screen keyboard appears as you edit the transcribed text, you can, of course, use the microphone button to get your iPad to start taking dictation as you edit your transcribed text.

Tips and tricks that make using the iPad keyboard easier
or many, the biggest challenge of the iPad (aside from resisting buying one) is getting accustomed to using the virtual keyboard. But theres nothing to worry about, it really couldnt be any easier. Whether youre coming from a full-size computer keyboard or a thumb-based smartphone, here are some ways to tap into the iPads typing features.
Catch and release
The iPad differs from most other keyboards as it registers the key youve pressed when you take your finger off the key, instead of when you tap on it. The added benefit is if you press a key and see that its the wrong one, you can easily slide your finger to the correct key.
Punctuation slide
Heres a real time-saver: The next time you need to add a punctuation mark, press and hold the .?123 button until the numeric and punctuation keyboard appears, slide your finger to the key you want, and release it. Not only will you type the punctuation mark, but youll find yourself back in alphabet mode without having to press the ABC key.
Unlock caps lock
Typing in all caps may be considered impolite, but sometimes its necessary. The caps lock functionality isnt enabled by default; to turn it on, go to Settings: General: Keyboard and tap on Enable Caps Lock. Then, when youre typing, quickly double-tap on the Shift key; itll turn blue to tell you caps lock is on. Tap on it once more to disable caps lock.
Department of corrections
No matter how good a typist you are, mistakes happen. Fortunately, the iPads pretty darn smart. By looking at the letters near the ones you typed, it can deduce with surprising accuracy what you meant to type. Once youve typed a few more letters, the iPad will likely figure out what you meant and will offer the suggestion in a text bubble. To accept the iPads suggestion, just press the spacebar or a punctuation mark. If the iPads being a little overeager, tap on the suggestion and itll go away. Dismiss the iPads suggestion for the same word twice, and itll add the word you actually typed to the internal dictionary, so it will be checked for in the future.
If you discover a typo, its easy enough to fix. Simply tap on the spot where you want the cursor to appear, and then tap on backspace to clear your mistake. However, controlling the cursor this way can be challenging. For even more precise results, tap and hold on the text to make a magnifying loupe appear. As you drag the loupe around the body of text, the text insertion point will follow it so you can easily position the cursor exactly where you want it.

ith the advent of Internet communication, the amount of contact information people have to remember has quadrupled. Phone numbers, email addresses, chat handles, usernames, aliases needless to say, it can get complicated, fast. Thankfully, your device can store all of this and more in the Contacts app, which syncs across iOS to provide communication auto-completion across the board. To make sure your Contacts list is as up-to-date as possible, here are a few ways to keep things neat, organised and useful.
Import contacts
iTunes, in addition to syncing calendars, apps and email accounts, can also take care of your Contacts organisation. To sync your contacts, iTunes will require you to connect specifically with one computer. Syncing is also bi-directional any changes made to a contact on your device will show up on the computer the next time you connect the two, and vice versa.
Sync with the Mac
On the Mac, your device can sync contacts from OS Xs Address Book, an online Yahoo Address Book or your Google contacts. The first time you connect your phone to your Mac, iTunes will ask which contacts you want to import. You can choose to import every contact in OS Xs Address Book or specify only selected groups. Yahoo and Google users can sync their contacts by selecting the respective Sync Contacts option for their service. Supply a username and password for the correct account and iTunes will take care of the rest.

Sync wirelessly
You can synchronise your devices contacts without having to connect to your computer. However, you need to be using either Apples iCloud service or a Microsoft Exchange server (including Google, via the Google Mobile service). To enable over-the-air syncing, visit Settings, iCloud and tick Contacts to turn this feature on. Once youve set up your contacts to sync, any changes you make on your iPhone or iPod touch will be reflected in the service you sync with for example, your iCloud contacts on your Mac and on the Web, or your Exchange address book. If you turn off mobile syncing later on, the synced contacts will be removed. Youll need to either re-enable syncing or connect your device to your computer to restore them.
Enter contacts manually
You can also add contacts to your device by accessing your Contacts list. Tap the Contacts button from the Home screen. To create a new contact, tap the + sign at the top-right of the screen. A blank form will appear. Tap each section to enter the appropriate contact information, including the name, company, number (or numbers), email address and website. But youre not limited to the default list of contact fields (see New Additions). Tap Add Field at the bottom of the screen to access a list of additional options, including birthday (or any important date), nickname, job, IM username and a general Note field that you can use for any other details. To delete a contact, tap the Edit button, scroll down and tap Delete Contact.

In the Contacts app, All Contacts alphabetically lists every contact (you can set it to sort by first or last name in the Settings screen). You can scroll up and down or use the alphabet running down the right side of the screen to jump to contacts starting with a particular letter. You can also look for someone by using the search bar at the top. Alternatively, you can perform a Spotlight search in the main Spotlight screen (swipe left of the first Home screen). Your results will include matching contacts, along with matching results in other categories (see Search Party). If you have your contacts divided into groups and synced, you can also look through them using the Groups button.
Share a contact
To share a contact on your device with someone else, select the desired contact, scroll to the bottom of the page, and tap Share Contact. You can choose from sharing via email (which will create a new message with the information attached as a vCard (.vcf) file), or via Messages, which will send the contacts information in a text message to another person using an iOS device with the Messages app.

As when it rst launched, the iPad does feel somewhat magical to use. Its not that you cant gure out how it works (its a tablet computer, after all), but with so much contained in such a small space you nd it hard to believe how Apple have managed to cram it all in. And, like most Apple products (in fact, more than other Apple products), the new iPad is a sealed unit designed to keep your prying eyes away from its innards. So what does the new iPad contain? Our friends at iFixIt (www.ixit.com) are experts at taking apart technical devices (and showing people how to x them). Theyve taken the iPad apart, stripped it down and discovered what hides behind the screen and what holds it all together. Lets take a look inside

1: Heat up
Some heat, guitar picks, and a plastic opening tool make relatively quick, arduous work of removing the front panel. Just like its predecessor, the new iPad is very dicult to disassemble. Adhesive secures the glass to the case, making common repairs and battery replacement tricky.
2: Screen o
A heavy-duty display should only be removed by using a pair of heavy-duty suction cups. As we lift the LCD, we hear the muted cries of 3,145,728 pixels being dislodged from their homes inside.
3: Cut the cord

Its time to cut (spudge) the umbilical cord on the display and touchscreen. The display connectors in the iPad 2 and iPad 3 are di erent, meaning that the two displays are incompatible with one another for now.
5: A screw loose
Connectors and screws, connectors and screws, to secure a logic board, thats what you use! We might not be very good at writing original poetry, but with spudger and trusty screwdriver in hand, were undisputed masters of our teardown craft.
4: Mysterious graphic barcodes

The model numbers on the back of the 9.7-inch LCD lead us to believe this is a Samsung LCD. Beside the numbers we nd three mysterious graphic barcodes. They allure the teardown expert, a dubious distraction indeed. What do they do? Our best guess: crash your iPhone or turn it into an iPad scan at your own risk.

Come now, iPad. Let go of your logic board, please. Thank you Siri... Siri? Are you there? (silence). The logic board is out! Using some leftover pixie dust from our recent iPhone 4S teardown, we will coax the stubborn EMI Shields o so we can take a good look at the logic board.

So heres a bonus for all of you: the A5X cover removed. Underneath the cover we nd the A5X processor ip chip mounted onto the carrier PWB. Its a safe bet that the A5X cover is a heat sink for the CPU, given theres thermal paste underneath and a thermal pad on top of the cover. The A5X measures 12.82mm x 12.71mm (162mm2) which is 36 per cent larger than the A5.
12: Power up
As is the case with most tablets, the iPad 3 is really just a giant battery. While the iPad 2 housed a formidable 25-watt-hour Liion battery, the iPad 3 has upped the ante to 42.5 watt-hours. Its 3.7 volts and estimated 10 hours of use are comparable to the iPad 2, but we assume the extra 17.5 watt-hours are put to good use powering the extra RAM and greatly improved GPU.

Each separate cell lists its rating of 3.78 volts and 14.60 watthour. Theyre graced with some more matrix barcode tags and wonderful inscriptions that read 741-0065-A P11GG9-01-F01TS. Swoon. Chris Foresman at Ars Technica compared the energy density to the battery in the iPad 2, and it comes out about the same around 0.0014 watt-hour/mm3. Apple physically increased the size of each cell by about 70 per cent explaining the big jump from 25 to 42 watt-hours.

As we progress through the teardown, what remains is just the carcass of a once mighty iPad. Being the vultures that we are, lets continue picking away at the remains of this aluminium beast. First on our list is the dock connector. This seems to have the same pin layout as the iPad 2, we have yet to determine whether or not the dock connectors are swappable. Pesky, nicky screws be gone and let us remove the antenna in peace.

With faster innards, but a more demanding screen, the new iPad is a technical marvel. We put one through its paces By Jason Snell
he iPad 2 was much faster than the original iPad, thanks to its dual-core A5 processor. But the A5X processor that powers the third-generation iPad doesnt really offer more processing power than its predecessor. In all our processor-based tests, the new iPad ran about as fast as the iPad 2. (Which is not to say its slow theyre the two fastest iOS devices ever.) With this update, Apple wasnt as concerned about boosting the iPads speed even further, because it had another, bigger problem to solve: boosting the iPads graphics capabilities so that it could update the 3.1 million pixels on its Retina display. (Keep in mind, previous iPad screens only had about 786,000 pixels.) Updating that many pixels requires a whole lot more graphics power just to keep things running as smoothly as before. That power comes from the X factor in the A5X processor a new quad-core graphics engine. And sure enough, the thirdgeneration iPad blows away every other iOS device in terms of graphics performance. In our tests using the GLBench 3D graphics testing app, the third-generation iPad could draw a complex 3D scene at the full frame rate of its display, 60 frames per second, without breaking into a sweat. And in GLBench offscreen tests, which arent constrained by the displays frame rate, the
third-generation iPad had a frame rate 1.6 times that of the iPad 2 (and an impressive 13 times that of the original iPad). As we said: fast. So the new iPad definitely has the horsepower to render highquality graphics on its Retina display. However, app developers will need to update their apps to work well on the new iPad. All of Apples built-in apps worked well with the Retina display, scrolling smoothly at all times. But several third-party apps had glitches, including unresponsive interfaces and stuttering scrolling. What this suggests is that developers who could get away with some inefficiencies when painting the relatively small canvas of previous iPad screens will find those inefficiencies laid bare when they first run their apps on this new hardware. Apples apps show that the new iPad has the power to keep it all smooth; but it looks like app developers will need to run their apps on this new hardware and then spend some time optimizing their code so that it shines on this new, bigger display. Going beyond pure graphics performance, my tests found the new iPad to be roughly the same speed as the old one. The GeekBench testing app said the iPad 2 was slightly faster. The Sunspider JavaScript benchmark gave them both the same scores. And in my webpage-loading test, the new iPad was faster. Measuring 3G performance (the 4G network is not available yet in the UK) shows that the new iPad with its twin antennae roughly matches the iPhone 4S for speed. (There is some natural fluctuation in network speeds, so we can discount the slight difference). Of course, when the HSPA+ networks appear in the summer this speed will improve in compatible areas (and then even more when 4G LTE finally arrives), but 6.36Mbps isnt to be sniffed at anyway. All in all, the iPad remains a spritely device.

ellular versions of the new iPad come with support for the latest and greatest wireless networking technology, LTE (Long Term Evolution). On first glance this would seem great. 4G is one better than 3G, right? But its not as simple as all that. LTE is an early version of fourth-generation (4G) cellular technology. So early, in fact, that you are unlikely to be able to hook up your iPad directly to a true LTE network in the UK until 2013. Given all that, you might be wondering why Apple has gone with 4G for its new iPad. While it does seem a tad early, the networks are being tested at the moment, and the initial rollout will be next year. Also, the 4G technology in the iPad is compatible with a new version of 3G called 3GA (3G Advanced) or HSPA+ (Evolved High Speed Package Access). While not as fast as LTE, this still offers a marked improvement over current 3G technology.
You might be wondering why Apple has gone with 4G for its new iPad
LTE in the UK
The UK is in the slow lane when it comes to upgrading our mobile network. As Apples excitement about LTE 4G would suggest, the standards already in use in the US. And its not just the United States thats beaten us to this one. Germany, Sweden, France and Italy are all ahead of us in the 4G stakes. Its kind of embarrassing really. Telecoms watchdog Ofcom is supposed to be auctioning off chunks of radio spectrum (the 800MHz and 2.6GHz frequencies) that will support the 4G services. This auction had been planned for early 2012, following consultations during 2011, but Ofcom has delayed the auction due to: Substantial and strongly argued responses to this consultation. It doesnt matter when Ofcom gives the auction the go-ahead, the frequencies being auctioned wont be available until next year yes, 2013. The 800MHz frequency isnt available right now as its still being used for analogue TV in some parts of the UK. When the switchover to digital television is finally completed later this year, the spectrum that was being used for analogue transmission will be up for auction.
Double frequency
The reason why 4G needs to be able to use two dierent frequencies is so that it can get to people in the depths of the countryside, as well as have enough to go around in cities. 2.6GHz is perfect for cities, 800MHz is better for rural areas. Three million UK residents live in areas not covered by even a 2G connection, and Ofcom is tasked with ensuring that this Digital Divide doesnt continue. In fact, in January 2012 Ofcom said that they would only grant the spectrum on the condition that at least one of the new licence holders achieved 98 per cent coverage across the country. Its this 800MHz band, which can travel further, that will allow this. (Incidentally, in the US, the 700MHz band was auctioned to AT&T and Verizon this lacks the long-range reach of 800MHz. Germany is using 800MHz for LTE, and Norway and Sweden are using 2.6GHz for LTE).
Whats so great about LTE anyway?
The more data that can be carried over a given allotment of spectrum, the more customers a carrier can serve in a given area covered by a base station, and the more revenue (and, one expects, prot) it can generate. The technology also reduces latency, which is the lag time usually measured as being the time from initiating a request to a network and receiving the response. Think about turning on a tap and waiting for the water to ow (latency) compared to the volume that comes out (throughput). The latency on 3G networks is like an old pump well which you have to prime to start the ow. On an LTE network, its the convenience of pressurised indoor plumbing. Less latency means better buering, quicker starts, and less choppiness for streaming video and less stuttering for Internet telephony calls. LTEs latency can be as low as wired broadband. LTE is also much more exible than the two dominant 3G standards that are part of CDMA and GSM networks. Those standards work with

fixed channel widths, measured in megahertz. If a carrier can only obtain licences in a given geographical area or even an entire country for ranges of frequencies that dont precisely match up with those fixed widths, it cant make use of 3G or use it efficiently. But with LTE, carriers can use slices of 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20MHz. LTE has yet another trick up its sleeve: the use of multiple antennas with multiple-in, multiple-out (MIMO) technology. This lets LTE use different amounts of signal power to transmit each data stream. The multiple antennas on the receiver let it interpret the transmission distinctly from others passing in the same space. The result is that MIMO lets carriers double up (and, in the future, even octuple up) the throughput of the network.

Apple has made it clear that LTE is fast, fast, fast! And in every way, thats true. LTE networks will nearly always be faster than comparable 3G networks in the same place. But thats not the best part of LTE. It wont be just faster; it will remain faster, in a consistent and reliable fashion, a greater portion of the time than 3G. The new iPad also supports the faster versions of 3G, so you get a speed and coverage advantage on the most up-to-date HSPA+ and DC-HSPA networks, toojust not as much. The iPad can access all of the following kinds of networks: EV-DO = 3.1Mbit/s HSPA 7.2 = 7.2Mbit/s HSPA+ = 21Mbit/s DC-HSDPA = 42Mbp/s LTE 4G = 73Mbp/s
Everything Everywhere, Three (3) and O2 have plans to roll out 21Mbit/s HSPA+ nationwide by the third quarter of 2012. And the good news is that, according to Apples Phil Schiller, The New iPad will be able to support that. Where you might have coverage gaps, high congestion with other users in the same mobile cell in a city (or even a small town with few base stations), or a huge variation in speed, its likely that LTE will smooth all that out. Carriers will have a much larger pool of bandwidth that the technology lets them to divide it up more precisely among users trying to gain access.
The use of MIMO helps by reducing the number of coverage holes and poor reception areas that exist. MIMOs ability to bounce data around lets areas with marginal signal strength get far better results than theyd get with single-antenna systems. So while it might take, on average, half or a quarter as long to download an image or a movie or load a webpage with LTE than with a 3G network in the same physical location, the experience will also be less frustrating, because LTE will work more reliably more of the time.
What about the tests?
Dont despair. All is not lost. Everything Everywhere, (the parent company that formed when UK networks T-Mobile and Orange merged), has announced that its planning to roll out 4G this year. In fact Everything Everywhere has joined forces with BT to run a trial of LTE 4G with 180 residents of Newquay and St. Newlyn in Cornwall. They are achieving this LTE 4G by utilising 10MHz of the test 800MHz spectrum. According to Everything Everywhere, those taking part in the trial have achieved an average download speed of 7Mbps, which enables access a range of content including On Demand television, HD video and VoIP services. O2 is also doing a 4G test across London, in the Hyde Park area and The O2 in Greenwich, although only compatible 4G dongles supplied by O2 work with the service. Three is also testing 4G services along the M3 corridor (in sites close to Slough and Maidenhead). All major networks intend to roll out full 4G LTE services in 2013. Apple has future-proofed the latest iPad by adopting 4G. Honestly, were a bit surprised that Apple would take the hit in terms of battery, weight, and size in order to put LTE chips in their devices at this early stage of the technologys development. But by keeping the price the same as the iPad 2, and improving performance and the display, along with adding support for the fastest 3G flavours and current 4G technology, we dont think anyone will be feeling the twinge of buyers remorse. Far from it, in fact.

The Sennheiser 250-IIs also employ active noise-reducing technology, with an integral volume knob thats much easier to use than the small buttons on many other models. Overall, these are a great pair of headphones with incredible sound quality.

While the roller isnt the most businesslike (or even adult) offering on show, its blue and white styling has a playfulness thats ideal for the young-at-heart. Its also available in black and bright pink, but youll need to wear a pair of sunglasses if you opt for the latter as it borders on fluorescent. Think Barbie, and youll be on the right lines.
HP Photosmart 5510
Company: HP URL: www.hp.com/uk Price: 79 The HP Photosmart 5510 is a printer you can use with your iPad (or iPhone or any iOS device) thanks to Apples AirPrint technology. This is built in to the iPad and means all you have to do is connect the printer to the same wireless network, select a document, photo, or Mail message and hit Print. Its hard to find fault with HPs Photosmart Premium. Its fast, versatile and produces very good-quality prints and is a great price to boot.
Shure SRH440
Company: Native Union URL: www.pixmania.com Price: 79 Shure is a firm known for professional-quality microphones and studio headsets. The SRH440s are a substantial, heavy set of phones, industrially styled in thick plastic. The cord is coiled, durable and rubberised, locking and twisting into the headset. The cups are large, easily fitting over the ears, with comfortable padding. They have great sound quality and almost no sound leakage.
Union Jack Sleeve

Company: Orbyx URL: www.orbyx.com Price: 29.99 This is one for the patriots a tri-tone leather-look sleeve. Its large enough to accommodate the new iPad with a Smart Cover attached, so is a good choice if youd rather not pair your Smart Cover with a specific-fit rear cover. The iPad slides in from the right-hand side and is held in place by the slot-in tab. The interior is made from a beige faux-suede material. Our only concern is that the edge of your iPad could be vulnerable if you were to drop it in the Orbyx. The styling is a personal choice, but at 30, its not bad value, though.

But dont underestimate the power of Apples diminutive TV device: its a fantastic piece of kit to have in the home. The Apple TV enables you to buy, download, and stream content from iTunes on your television (you can rent and download movies); it has support for Netflix; and you can stream and play music, podcasts, videos and photos from a Mac or PC, or directly from your iPad. While it still lacks some functionality that wed like (theres no BBC iPlayer support, for example) its still the easiest way to stream iTunes content to your TV.
LA robe Moorea
Company: Be.ez URL: www.be-ez.com Price: 25 Named after the French Polynesian island of Moorea, this sleeve is big enough for your new iPad with a Smart Cover attached. Each side is padded with 5mm low-resilience polyurethane (thats hard foam to you and I) and is lined with a soft material. An inner lip protects the iPad on every edge, including from the zip along the top.Its also available in green and pink, but there are other designs in the 10-inch LA robe range (Allure and Club) if the Moorea is too flowery for you.
iPad Camera Connection Kit

Company: Apple URL: www.apple.com/uk Price: 25 The Camera Connection Kit for the iPad is a perfect accessory for photographers looking to take advantage of the iPads display capabilities. Instead of having to connect an iPad to a Mac to load it up with your photos and videos, you can move this content directly onto an iPad from a camera using one of two dock connectors in the kit. This kit is simple to use and turns the iPad into an excellent tool for photographers who need to back-up or preview photos in the field. If you shoot with a camera that accepts SD memory cards, use the SD dock connector to transfer media (mini-SD cards can also be used with an adapter). Push the reader in the iPads port and insert the card. If you shoot with another type of media card, such as CF, then use the companion USB connector. The iPads Photos app launches immediately and displays thumbnails for every image on the memory card.
Smart Cover
Company: Apple URL: www.apple.com/uk Price: 35 The Smart Cover clips on to the side of the new iPad using two magnets and a clever clamp that makes it easy to attach and remove, while simultaneously ensuring that it doesnt slip off. Another set of magnets clamp it to the screen of the new iPad, and opening and closing the Smart Cover wakes up and puts the device to sleep. It also folds into a triangle to form a stand for the iPad to make it easier to type and the inside of the Smart Cover is a micro fibre surface that helps keep the screen clean as you open and close the cover. What it doesnt do particularly well is protect the new iPad, which is a virtually solid piece of glass that will happily shatter if you drop it onto a concrete ground. So you should seriously consider a full case as well.
Digital AV Adapter
Company: Apple URL: www.apple.com/uk Price: 35 This handy little adapter enables you to mirror anything you see on your iPads screen on a HDTV. Its useful if you want a quick and easy way to show off whats on your iPad on a bigger screen without investing in an Apple TV. While its not as versatile as an Apple TV its also a third of the price, and can be carried around with you. The Digital AV Adaptor is a great way to play video, stream audio, and show off photos. Its also useful for doing presentations, which are increasingly shown using HDTVs or projectors with a HDMI input. A second Dock connector input enables you to keep your iPad on charge while streaming the video out to the HDTV, which is great when playing long movies (which can be played up to 720p resolution on the iPad.
Smart Feather
Company: Incipio URL: www.incipio.com Price: 25 Apple chose not to make a companion rear cover to go with the Smart Cover, so plenty of companies have stepped up to the plate to fill the void. Incipio has modified its original Smart Feather to fit the new iPad. It comes in the same colours as Apples Polyurethane Smart Covers, so looks like an original Apple cover. Theres also a screen protector in the box. Look for part code IPAD-255, as its easy to confuse with the iPad 2 version IPAD-235.

Tech this good deserves to be taken advantage of but, alas, many existing iOS apps arent yet optimised for the display. Theyll still look good on the new device, but they could look great. So, to help you fully put your new tablet through its paces, weve compiled a list of the best Retina-ready apps currently on the App Store.
Sky Gamblers
Price: 2.99 The App store blurb for arcade veteran Namcos brilliant aerial dogfight sim promises, 4x anisotropic filtering, High Dynamic Range (HDR) rendering, radial blur and refractive raindrops. Not sure what all that means? Neither are we, but were assuming its longhand for looks ruddy amazing. Not only is it a fun, addictive shoot em up, but Sky Gamblers squeezes every last drop of horsepower out of the new iPad. A phenomenal showcase for what Apples machine can really do.

Price: 2.99 The new iOS version of Apples brilliantly accessible photo-editing suite is a great tool for showing off the new iPad screen. Not only does it offer unparalleled clarity when displaying your high definition photos, but it also makes it that much easier to accurately edit your images. Unwanted blemishes are easier to spot, subtle tweaks are easier to appreciate and crops are easier to judge. Honestly, youll want to glue a picture hook to the back of your tablet and hang it on the wall.
Infinity Blade 2
Price: 4.99 The game that Apple originally used to showcase what the iPad 2 could do now offers a similarly impressive benchmark for its successor. Developer Chair Entertainment has updated its acclaimed action game to fully support the new screen and it looks better than ever. Put this up against a top-end PlayStation 3 game and you wouldnt be able to spot the difference. Whats more, the touch screen swordplay action is still great fun, offering some of the deepest gaming on the system.
Sketchbook Pro
Price: 2.99 Not only has developer Autodesk updated its popular digital sketchbook app so that it supports the new iPads Retina screen, but it has also leveraged the devices new processing power to add additional functionality. Artists can now make use of more layers on their images 18 (up from 12) for the 1024 x 768 canvas, and six (up from four) for the 2048 x 1536 canvas. In short, one of the best art packages available on the system just got better, and at no extra charge.
iMovie
Price: 2.99 It should come as no surprise that one of Apples own flagship apps was among the first programmes to receive an update adding support for the manufacturers new generation of tablet tech. Full HD footage captured with the iPads impressive new camera looks ace at 1080p. Whats more, Apple has even added extra features: new cross-app content sharing with GarageBand, a few new editing tools and the ability to cut together a Hollywood-style trailer for your movie.

Price: 6.99 Apples popular word processing app was another obvious candidate for a Retina update and the platform holder has failed to disappoint. As well as full support for the new screen, the latest update has brought with it a couple of additional features. You can now include a variety of charts in your documents, and theres improved Cloud support too. And on top of that, the new built-in dictation tool in the iPads virtual keyboard really comes into its own here!

Price: 4.99 The iOS companion piece to megaselling PC and console space RPG Mass E ect is one the rst new apps to come with Retina support as standard. The game itself is a stripped-down, arcadey take on its more nuanced and complex source material, but is a fun 3D shooter nonetheless, and a brilliant showcase for the systems power. In a similar vein, the Dead Space app, from the same publisher and developer also has Retina support.
Solar Walk
Price: 1.99 The fascinating interactive galactic map app was always going to bene t from the new iPads extra power and developer Vito Technology doesnt let us down. The app now includes new high resolution textures, slick visual e ects and a handsome new user interface that makes exploring our galaxy even more of a sensory assault. New space objects have been added too including the asteroid belt and the moons of Neptune.

Price: 6.99 Apple hasnt wasted any time updating its Pages spreadsheeting app to take advantage of its newly empowered tablet. As well as support for that razor sharp Retina screen, its shoehorned a number of performance improvements as well as the ability to display your data in an impressive array of 3D charts. It remains the best app of its kind on the App Store and a hugely useful o ce tool no matter the scope of number crunching.

Price: 2.99 Firemints best-selling racing sim has made impressive use of Apples latest hardware update. Naturally, the already eye-popping visuals have received an additional boost with full support for the Retina display. But the developer has gone above and beyond by adding a nice new feature that lets third generation iPad owners capture and edit screen grabs of the racing action which you can save in a gallery or share with friends. Its a fun extra that really helps showcase the new iPads power.
Labyrinth 2 HD
Price: 5.49 Labyrinth 2s core concept is as old as the hills you tilt the playing surface to guide a marble through a maze dotted with obstacles and pitfalls. However, developer Illusion Labs has breathed new life into it on the iPad by upping the challenge and broadening the scope. Its added multiplayer, } incorporated a vast array of o -thewall new elements and included a full-featured level editor allowing you to create your own stages. Whats more, it also looks fantastic, thanks to a new Retina update.
Photoshop Express
Price: Free Adobes alternative to iPhoto isnt quite as slick and accessible as Apples editing suite, but is a solid package nonetheless, o ering a range of tools, lters and special e ects with which to touch-up your snaps. Be warned, some of the features on o er are only available via an additional in-app purchase, so go in with your eyes open. As is the case with Apples iPhoto, the newly Retina-friendly app is both a great way of showing o the new iPads amazingly detailed screen and all your images.
Keynote
Price: 6.99 Another part of Apples o ce suite, Keynote lets you easily create presentations and slideshows from your iPad. Like all Apple software, its extremely user-friendly and has a range of clever tricks to help set your work apart. You can add your own animations, incorporate media youve created in iMovie or GarageBand, build dynamic charts and graphs, all with a few quick swipes of the display.
iStopMotion
Price: 6.99 Does what it says on the tin. iStopMotion is a rather brilliant little package that lets you create your own stop-motion animation on your iPad. Once youve set up your scene, you can trigger a time lapse photo sequence which takes an image every few seconds, giving you time to move objects around and create a complete movie. Its well put together, easy to use and, with added Retina support.
Order and Chaos

Price: 4.99 Lets not beat around the bush Order and Chaos is a fairly shameless iOS ri on the hugely popular fantasy MMO World of Warcraft. Though it wins few points for originality, Gamelofts e ort scores with its moreish gameplay, classy feature set and accomplished visuals. Take note its a subscription title, so you have to pay a monthly fee on top of the purchase price to keep playing.
Star Walk
Price: 1.99 From the same developer behind the excellent Solar Walk app, Star Walk is an essential iOS purchase for amateur astronomers. The app o ers an astonishingly detailed map of the night sky complete with pro le pages for all of the main heavenly bodies. Whats more, thanks to GPS, it also works in real time. Just hold your device up to the night sky and the app will overlay information about the stars visible in your display.
Flight Control Rocket

Price: 69p Flight Control remains one of the true App Store classics fun, easy to pick up and impossible to put down. A few years on from their original e ort, developer Firemint has unleashed a sequel of sorts, and its every bit as addictive. The principle remains the same you need to guide your vessels onto a series of landing pads while avoiding other air tra c. This time, the action has shifted to outer space, bringing with it a range of new gameplay possibilities. As one of the rst games released in the wake of the new iPad, it fully supports the new Retina display.
Incredibooth
Price: 69p Just the thing for a wild night on the town, Incredibooth lets you snap strips of photobooth-style images with friends, o ering you a range of wacky lters and backdrops to up the fun factor. The results are often hilarious. Its a straightforward point-and-shoot app, but its also very thoughtfully put together with a wide range of editing and sharing options.

Either plug in one of your own instruments or use the virtual keyboards, drumkits and guitars included, and record your own mini-masterpiece. Its as complex and sophisticated as you want it to be. Newcomers can record a brief jingle, while experts can work on an epic multi-track symphony. No musical ability is required.
Barefoot World Atlas

Price: 5.49 This fantastic new kids app is an iPad-only interactive atlas that colourfully immerses youngsters in the myriad wonders of planet Earth. Its a great way of engaging children in geography, detailing di erent wildlife, the worlds great cities, geological features and weather systems. Theres spoken narration as well as written text, vibrant photography, lovely illustrations and a massive library of sound e ects and music.
iBooks
Price: Free One of the iPads few weaknesses is that, as an e-reader, it cant hope to match up to a Kindles E Ink display. The tablets more traditional screen is harder to read for longer periods than the competitions virtual paper. However, with the advent of the Retina display and a corresponding iBooks update, thats much less of an issue. The added clarity makes it much easier on the eye with a number of new functionality enhancements too.
In nity Blade: Dungeons

Price: TBA Its not available yet, but when it does make its way onto the App Store you can expect the latest entry in Epic Games In nity Blade series to be the best looking title on the device. This new top-down action-orientated spin on the original is built with the new iPads beefy specs in mind. Epics head honcho Mike Capps insisted that its only going to look like this and play like this on the new iPad.
Another Monster at the End of This Book

Price: 2.49 This Sesame Street interactive story book is one of the most charming kids apps currently available on the App Store. And theres a fair few young-at-heart adults wholl get some chuckles out of it too. Its not terribly complicated its just a well-told story dotted with a few lively mini-games and animations designed to build youngsters vocabulary and spatial-relations skills. And a new Retina update really helps bring things to life, with vibrant colours and smooth transitions. Highly recommended.
Touchgrind BMX
Price: 2.99 A great example of a game that could only ever work on a touch screen device. This ingenious creation sees you pulling o BMX stunts by manipulating your bike in real time using the multi-touch display. Its an ambitious concept but work beautifully in practice, o ering some of the purest fun of any App Store game. In a nice touch, it even lets you record your most outrageous tricks for posterity and share them with friends. The latest stunning Retina display update has it looking even better than ever to boot.
The best looking title on the device
Modern Combat 3
Price: 4.99 The closest thing youll get to a full Call of Duty game on the App Store. The rst person shooter genre isnt naturally a great t for touch screen controls, but Modern Combat 3 does its best within the limitations, o ering up a fun, slick and perfectly playable action game. It wins no points for originality this is an app that knows exactly who its audience is but as shooting galleries go, this is a solid, Retina-enabled choice with great multiplayer functionality.
Ashphalt 6: Adrenaline
Price: 69p This slick racer from iOS specialists Gameloft runs Real Racing 2 pretty close for pole position as the best motorsport game on the App Store. The newly Retinafriendly visuals are up there with the very best on the system, the customisable tilt steering controls are intuitive and smooth, and there are some fun online multiplayer modes that let you duke it out with friends. Theres heaps of content to work with too. Start your engines.
Evernote
Price: Free Simply put, Evernote is one of the very best productivity apps available for iOS devices. This hugely popular piece of software lets you draw up lists, jot down reminder notes, take photos and record voice memos, and then le them by date and/or location. You can sync everything across multiple devices, email items to friends and colleagues, and post content to various social networks. Its a great way to stay organised and reduce your paper trail.

Setting up your new iPad for the first time

Get your new iPad up and running without a PC or Mac
YOUVE FINALLY GOT YOUR HANDS ON THE BRAND new iPad and now its time to get it set up and ready for use. The excitement of buying a new iPad has, over the years, been tempered by the fact that to get your device up and running you were rst required to plug your tablet into a computer. Whether you stood in line for two weeks to get your hands on one, or pre-ordered for it to be delivered to your house, the rush of delight was often held in check by the necessity to wait until iTunes told you that your shiny new tablet was ready. Now with iOS 5.1 your new iPad no longer needs to be physically connected to a computer rst in order for it to work. As you might expect from Apple, the process is simple and quick; about the most technically dicult part is inserting the micro SIM card into your new iPad. However, in typical Apple style theres a SIM tray pin included in the box to make this task even easier. Well assume that you have all the boring stu like tablet price plan sorted out and have un-boxed and inserted the SIM card into your new iPad. From here on in its no more than a ve-minute process. Wire-free setup is a breeze and all you have to do is follow the simple steps here to make sure that you and your tablet are ready to go as quickly as possible. After that, theres a whole world of calling, texting, tweeting, internet browsing and taking photos, as well as all the apps to enjoy.

STEP by STEP guIdE: Set up your new iPad for the first time
1 Turn on
Press and hold the button on the top of the new iPad until you see the Apple logo on screen. After a few moments youll see the above screen. Slide to get started.
2 Pick your language The first screen lets

you choose what language to use on your iPad. Tap on the language you want and a blue tick will appear next to it. Now tap the blue arrow.
3 Where am I? Pick your country next. Its likely that the new iPad will have your location as the top choice. If its not, tap on Show More Pick your location and then tap Next.
4 Location tracking If you want your new iPad and apps to know where you are handy for mapping and social media tools, enable it by taping Enable Location Services and then Next.
If you have a wireless network at home or at work, you can connect to it here. Tap on the wireless network name, if you dont just use your mobile connection.
5 Connect to Wi-Fi
Before you start using the new iPad, take time to read the terms and conditions. Click the blue Agree button when you are ready to continue.

By default your Home screen is filled with Apple apps. To move them around, tap and hold an icon until they start to wobble. Drag to move them around.
7 Activation
If this is your rst iPad, choose Set Up as New iPad and click next. Otherwise you can use iCloud or iTunes to transfer the data from one iPad to another.
8 Sign in You need an Apple ID to fully use your iPad. Click Sign In if you already have one, or Create a Free Apple ID to go through the process of signing up with Apple. Youre now good to go.

Wireless syncing works when both your new iPad and computer are connected to the same wireless network and when your tablet is connected to a power source. Youll have to keep your computer on and running iTunes, too. This means that you can leave your new iPad charging overnight and wake up to a fully synced tablet and iTunes. The more content youve purchased the longer it will take, but wireless sync covers everything: applications, music, bookmarks, books, contacts calendars, movies, photos, notes, documents and ringtones are all synced wirelessly over your network. When your new iPad is connected to a power source and on the Wi-Fi network, it shows up just as it would, were it plugged into your computer through a USB cable. This means you can change settings and other options wirelessly, too. Somewhat ironically, you have to plug your new iPad into your computer to enable wireless syncing, but after that, its all wire free.

1 Connect your new ipad the first step of setting up a wireless sync is to connect your new ipad
to your computer and open itunes. Once itunes has launched, click on your new ipad.
2 Start Wireless Sync
in itunes, click on the Summary tab and under the Options section, tick the box next to Sync with this ipad over Wi-Fi. Now click Apply in the itunes window.
3 Connect to Wi-Fi
Make sure your new ipad is connected by going to Settings and tapping on Network then Wi-Fi. Select your wireless network and enter the passwords as necessary.

If youd like all new apps that you buy to automatically sync to your device, simply check the option Automatically sync new apps.
If you have loads ofapps, music, photos and videos to sync to your new iPad, its best to do it over USB before going fully wireless. This makes any later syncs much smaller and faster. Once youve got all your stuff synced up, the incremental additions will besmoother.
7 Sync music
If you have a large music collection you may find that your new iPad gets filled up pretty fast. Click on the Music tab to choose which playlists to add.
8 Wireless speeds Its worth noting that the speed of your sync can be affected by other traffic on the network. So, if you can, avoid running a sync when youre surfing the web.

5 Storage capacity To see how much of your

5GB data allowance you are using simply tap on Storage and Backup. Here youll see how much is left for your documents, photos and settings.

Photo Stream
If you want to share your pictures easily, turn on the Photo Stream part of iCloud. This lets you share up to 1,000 photos between an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and your Mac. As soon as you take a picture with your iPhone, its put in your Photo Stream.
7 Documents & Data You can let your iPad

The app isnt just for those terrible worst-case scenarios where you actually do lose your new iPad, but for the more mundane times when youve discovered that youve left your new iPad at home or at work, too. The relief of nding out that your missing tablet is, in fact, still in your house somewhere is great. There have even been reports of people using technology to nd new iPads that were actually stolen and having the police recover them. You have to remember to keep the Find My iPad service on at all times, but this will use some battery power. However, slightly less battery life is probably better than a completely lost tablet. Once youve turned the GPS tracking on youll need the Find My iPad app, to use on another iOS device, or you can track your device down online. WOULDNT IT BE GREAT IF YOU DIDNT HAVE TO PAY for text messages? Well, now you dont. iMessage is built in to iOS 5 and lets you send free messages to anyone else with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. You can send pictures and video, as well as just plain text messages, as long as the intended recipients are running iOS 5. The best part is theres no setup involved. Your iPad will automatically detect if that person has a device with iOS 5 and send the message to them using a system Apple calls iMessage, which you access using the Messages app. You can send group messages, so if you need to let everyone in the family know whats going on, just add them to the conversation and type away. You can see when the other person is typing a reply and there are delivery and read receipts so that you know when your message got through. All the messages are encrypted with the latest security software so theres no chance your conversations can be read by anyone else. Also, thanks to the new voice recognition system, you can dictate messages direct to your iPad. This makes sending those short messages even faster, and its surprisingly accurate, too. Dont worry though, you can still use the keyboard if talking to your phone makes you feel a little bit self-conscious. Here well show you how to set up iMessages and start sending free messages to all your iOS 5-owning friends and family.

4 iOS only On the iPad you can only send Messages to other people using iMessage. On the iPhone it uses SMS to send messages as well. So bear in mind your sorry non-iOS owning friends.
If you want to send a picture, just tap on the camera icon. Here you can choose an image from your library or take a new picture with the iPads camera.
5 Picture message
If you want people to know for certain that youve read their message, you can switch on read receipts. Enable these receipts in theSettings app.

Clear your messages
Over time youre likely to get hundreds of messages. This can make navigating the Messages screen tricky. You can delete conversations in the Messages app. Swipe across the message from rightto left and then tap Delete.
7 See the response When the other person is typing a response you can see it in the chat window. The speech bubble with three dots indicates that the other person is writing a reply.
8 Speak your messages
Instead of typing messages you can dictate them. Tap the microphone button and speak. Tap Done when nished. The iPad turns your speech into text.

Notification Center is the perfect way to see your alerts and messages
PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF iOS NOTIFICATIONS COULD become a bit of a pain. The single message windows that popped up and interrupted whatever you were doing were really distracting. Halfway through reading a web page it would suddenly pause and youd get a message that someone had just checked in on Foursquare, or that youd been mentioned on Twitter. Not to mention that if you had a lot of apps with notications, it could take ages to wade through and dismiss them all. It made using your new iPad a bit of a pain, if were honest. With Notication Center in iOS 5 all this has changed and now your new iPad experience is much more streamlined. The Notication Centre lets you see far more detail about exactly whats going on, and you can get to it from anywhere at any time. You can happily continue to do what you were doing, be that watching a movie, playing a game or editing a document, and your other apps wont get in the way. You still get to see what notications are coming in, but its on your terms. The Notication Center doesnt have to be restricted to standard messages though. It will display the weather forecast and if youre interested stock prices, too. All the notications are kept hidden away until you really need them. Dont worry, you can still get all those old-style notications back if you wish. Youll nd out how in the next tutorial.

6 Scroll down The Noti cation Center has all your alerts, but you cant see every one on a single screen. Once Noti cation Centre is open, swipe down to see more of your messages and noti cations.
If you like the old style of pop-up alerts and badges, you can still see those red badges to tell you of any activity, such as text messages andmissed calls.
7 More detail If you want to get more detail on any of the items in Noti cation Center, simply tap on it to be taken to the relevant app. Here we tapped on a Twitter mesage.
8 Home screen Even if youre in the home screen, your noti cations will still appear at the top of the screen. So, no matter what youre doing, youll always get those important messages.

With the additional iCloud support you can easily see all your appointments and mail in one place. Messages and emails can all be read and assessed for importance at a glance. In short, its a truly eective way of seeing all your updates in one simple screen. The only problem with this approach, however, is there are so many apps that want to send you alerts and notications that the Notication Center itself can become overwhelmed. Too much information to scroll through and the usefulness of Notication Center is gone. Happily, you can manage how your notications will appear and which apps will be able to use them. Want to use an app but not allow it to send you notications? Thats not a problem. Even better, you can decide what type of notications you receive, be they banners or old-style alerts. 3 Banner or Alert To change notification

Decide if apps can use a badge, or how often alerts are repeated. You can choose to include or exclude thenotification from the iPad lock screen.
5 Alert repeat
By default, alerts are set to repeat just the once. If you often nd yourself missing alerts, you can have them repeated up to 10 times so that you never miss a noti cation.
If you want to see more ofyour messages, simply tap on Recent Items. You can choose to show just 1, 5 or 10 recent items in the list in Noti cation Center.

When you install a new app on your iPad it may ask you if it can send you updates and notifications. Tap on OK to set up notifications automatically or Dont Allow if you dont want it to. Youcan always edit the settings later.

WANT TO BE ABLE TO FIND YOUR FRIENDS NO matterwhere they are in the world, day or night? It might sound a bit creepy, but the Find My Friends application can really be very useful and a bit of fun too. By utilising the GPS thats built into new iPads, its possible for you to see exactly where your friends are on a map. Say, youve gone shopping with some friends and have been split up, you can easily nd your way back to each other. Though it might sound a bit strange to be tracked, or to track your friends and family, you have to allow people to follow you. Likewise, they have to allow you to track them. Its worth noting that you can turn o tracking at any time. Best of all you, can set up temporary tracking and invite loads of people to see exactly where you are. This means that they can see your location, though only for a given period of time, which is great if youre having a party or similar and need people to be able to nd you easily. You can use Find My Friends to let you know where people are, too. All this tracking can seem a bit like Big Brother, but you can turn it o easily and hide yourself away, whenever you choose. All Friends Tap on All Friends to see a zoomed-out view of where all your friends are at any one time. Obviously, if your friends are all over the world, the image is zoomed out to take in the distance between people.

1 Get Find My Friends Go to the App Store and download Find My Friends. When the app appears on your home screen its called Find Friends because the My makes the title too big.
2 Log in
Now you need to log in to start using the service. For this youll need an Apple ID. Simply enter your details here or, if you havent set up an account yet, tap on Get a free account.
3 Add friends To start finding your friends tap on Requests. Here youll see if anyone wants to add you to their Find My Friends service. Tap on Invite Friends to start inviting people.
4 Search contacts Type in the name of the

person you want to add. Each letter that you type will narrow down your contacts. Simply tap on a name to send a request.
5 See friends
Once youve sent some requests and been authorised to nd them, your friends will show up on the map. The blue dot is you, the purple dots are your friends.
6 Di erent maps
Custom labels
By default, the view you see of the map is a standard Google street map. Tap on the bottom-right to see other options. You can choose between a Satellite or Hybrid view.
To make it easer to know where your friends are you can add labels to their locations. So, you can add the tag Home to a location so that you know when your friend is at home. You can also customise your tag name.
7 Temporary sharing You can set up shortterm Find My Friends location sharing for those you might not want a permanent location for. Tap on Temporary and then Invite Friends.
8 Set the date Give your sharing event a name and set a date and time for when the location sharing will end. It can be for a short period of just a few hours or weeks at a time.

USING YOUR iPAD FOR REMINDERS AND TO DO LISTS is a great idea. Youre likely to have your new iPad with you at all times so it just makes sense. Odd, then that it took Apple so long to add a reminders app. Now, however, the rather aptly named Reminders app is here to help you with all your to-do lists. The app itself is built into iOS 5 and has some neat touches. Integrations with Voice Dictation is just one of the great features of Reminders. Additionally, you can use the GPS to activate reminders when you leave or arrive at certain places. So, your phone will remind you to pick up some milk on the way home as you leave work. Naturally, you can set your own time-sensitive reminder too, and if you have a lot of reminders you can easily search through them. They can be sorted in a list or by date and you can see a calendar view of all your reminders a month at a time. If youre using the iCloud service all your reminders can be synced across devices. 1 Reminders app Open the Reminders app toadd a to-do item to your list. Here youll see all your reminders and if youre using iCloud, the account name used to synchronise reminders.
2 New reminder Tap on the + icon to create anew reminder and the standard keyboard pops up. Type the reminder and tap Return. To edit it further, simply tap on the reminder again.
3 Dictate reminder
If you dont want to type your reminder, you dont have to. Tap on the microphone icon next to the spacebar and simply speak your reminder. Tap Done to enter it.
4 Edit reminders To change a reminder, when you are prompted about an event, simply tap on it to change the reminder time and alert Repeat settings, as well as Delete the event.
5 Location-based reminders You can

have a reminder pop up when you leave or arrive somewhere. The iPad uses GPS to track you and when at the right spot, it sends an alert.
6 See your month You can see all your

reminders in the month by tapping on Date then the calendar icon in the top-left of screen. Simply swipe up or down to see your monthly reminders.
Feel good about completion
You can check out the tasks that youve done by clicking Completed. Ticking things off and seeing the things youve done is a great way to feel better about achieving things during the day.
7 Search reminders If you cant see the reminder youre after, use the Search tool. In List orDate view tap on the top-left button to bring upthe Search eld.
8 Completed tasks Once youve completed all your tasks, you just tick them o , but your iPad keeps them handy in case you want to doublecheck that youve done them.

YOU CAN CREATE MESSAGES JUST BY SPEAKING your words and watch as your iPad transcribes them into any app youre currently using. This can be a great timesaver, especially if youre still getting used to typing on a glass keyboard. Its true that some people can reach truly amazing typing speeds, but those blisteringly fast wordsmiths denitely reside on the tail end of the bell curve. For most of us, typing on an iPad is slightly slower than using an actual keyboard, so the dictation tool could prove highly useful. And, it has to be said, theres just something plain cool about being able to dictate messages and notes directly on the iPad. Be aware though that your iPad needs to be connected to the internet in order to work: all the grunt work of transcribing your voice is done by Apples giant server farms, but its a small price to pay for not even having to train your device to recognise your voice. If youre used to dictation tools on traditional computers, youll love just being able to dive right in without hours of teaching your machine that you meant six, not sucks. Well show you the ins and outs of dictating some text onto your new iPad, and where you can enable and disable that feature at will.

1 Wheres the mic? Launch an app like Notes and youll notice that the keyboard looks just like it did on the previous iPads. Wheres the microphone? Thats because its not enabled by default.
2 Enable dictation To enable the dictation feature, you must take a trip to the Settings app, tap on General and locate the Keyboard options. Slide Dictation to On, then tap on Enable.
3 Back to notes Go back to the Notes app and youll notice that your keyboard now has a small microphone to the left of the spacebar (notice that this shrinks the spacebar a little).
4 Tap and speak Tap on that key and speak your first sentence of dictation. Your iPad will listen to you until you tap on either the large or small microphone buttons again.
5 Its thinking
Once youve stopped the recording, the iPad will then send your dictation to Apples server who will transcribe it for you and bring it back. This could take a little time.
6 Punctuation You may be disappointed to

see that the dictation tool doesnt add punctuation automatically, so your rst sentence may not look quite as you had expected.
Fixing typos
Any word highlighted in blue could have been a mistake. Tap on it and youll be offered an alternative transcription. If that alternative is the correct answer, tap on it to replace the typo. If it isnt, you dont have to resort to your keyboard: with the work selected, turn the microphone on and speak the correction instead.
7 Try again Dictate your sentence again, only this time, when you want to add a comma, say comma. A full stop, full stop (not period), a dash, dash, etc. It takes a little getting used to.
8 Disable If you wish to stop your iPad from listening to you, you can disable that feature by going back to the Setting app and sliding the Dictate option back to O .

THE MUSIC APP ON THE iPAD REPLACES THE iPOD app that was on all iPads before the iOS 5 launched. As you might expect the Music app is where youll nd all your audio les. In it, youll nd all your iTunes songs, albums, playlists and more. Its not just all your music either, because its here that youll also nd your podcasts and audiobooks. Although the name of the app has changed, the functionality hasnt altered all that much. If youve used the iPod app on a previous iOS device, youll probably not notice the changes theyre that subtle in implementation. One thing that has stayed the same is the exibility of the app, though it remains easy to use. Getting to your favourite music is easy with options to create your own playlists on the iPad or have the Music app create some for you with Genius Playlists. With album artwork you can use the coverow view to swipe through your albums by cover. As well as helping you manage all the music you own, theres also a quick link to the iTunes Store to let you get your hands on even more. And if you have iTunes Match you can stream and download all the tracks from all of your iTunes collections. So, whether you want to hear the same song over and over again, or shue your songs to add a bit of variety, or just have Genius go to work and create some creative playlists for those long journeys to and from work or in the gym, this tutorial will help you get to grips with the app.

Stream every song you have in any iTunes with iTunes Match
ONE OF THE BIGGEST TECH TRENDS OF THE LAST year or so is the shift to cloud computing, where you save data, and then access it, from a remote server rather than on your own machine. Naturally, Apple has put this to excellent use in iTunes, allowing users to store their entire music library in the cloud and access it from any device without using up memory. Apples service, called iTunes Match, scans your music library and either matches the track with a high quality version from the iTunes Store or, if it doesnt have the track in its database, uploads your version to cloud. Once complete, you can stream your tracks from any device (providing you have an active internet connection) without having to download them to that device. If you do want a hard copy of a song on one of your machines, Match also lets you download it from the cloud free of charge. The best part? You can store up to 25,000 tracks, transforming your humble iPad into a serious music archive. Whats more, you can access your songs from up to 10 dierent iTunes-enabled devices. Unsurprisingly, the service doesnt come for free it will set you back 21.99 a year. However, as our tutorial will demonstrate its easy to set up, easy to use and very versatile.

1 Getting started
First things first, you need to sign up to the Match service. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC desktop and hit the iTunes Match link under the Store tab in the left hand menu.
2 Matching tracks Follow the prompts and iTunes Match will then automatically cycle through your music library, either matching tracks with those in its central database or uploading any it doesnt recognise.
3 Access tracks
To listen to your library from your iPad, open Settings and then tap the Music tab in the left-hand menu. Toggle the iTunes Match switch to On. Hey presto, youre good to go.
4 Use cellular data Streaming music can quickly eat up a lot of your data contract. If you have an iPad 4G+WiFi you might want to switch the Use Cellular Data switch to Off.
Multiple devices
5 Downloading Should you want to download a track onto your device so you can listen to it when you dont have an internet connection, jut tap the the cloud icon to the right of a track.
6 Deleting tracks
If you nd your device lling up and want to remove a song from your library and send it back to the cloud, just swipe over a track to the left to bring up a Delete tab.
You can use iTunes Match on up to 10 different devices per account. To link a device, make sure your signed in to your Apple ID. If its an iOS device, go to Settings > Music > iTunes Match, and if its a computer just hit the iTunes Match tab in your iTunes menu panel.
7 Hiding cloud tracks If youd rather your iPad only displays tracks that you currently have stored on your device, go back to Settings, bring up the music tab and toggle Show All Music to O .
8 Resyncing To resync your cloud library when you buy new music via your desktop iTunes hub, just bring up Settings, tap on the Store tab and toggle Automatic downloads to On.

IN THE DAYS BEFORE THE INTERNET, SUBSCRIBING to a magazine was a great way to keep up to date with the latest news about your favourite subjects. But the web has changed this for many and the lure of instant information has been hard to resist. How can you cope with the deluge of data available in a web browser? Its possible to spend all day reading garbage online and not learn a thing. Many people long to read in-depth articles, books (like this one), and classic magazines like Macworld all in a new digital form. Newsstand is designed to try and help bridge the gap between the print and online publishing worlds by combining the richness of published material with a highly convenient way of accessing that information wherever you happen to be, all from the comfort of your iPad (the best part is that you can also get the same content for your iPhone and iPod touch via the same app). You can choose to buy individual issues or subscribe for a set period of time. When you select the latter, new issues will appear automatically in your Newsstand without you even having to get up and pick up the mail. Newsstand isnt an exclusive feature of the new iPad. In fact, it can be used on any iOS device, even the earlier iPads, but the sheer quality of the new iPads screen makes reading magazines and newspapers that much more of a pleasant experience since it feels like youre looking at glossy print. 1 The Newsstand Find the Newsstand icon which is a specialised folder where all your magazines and newspapers are stored. Tap on it to reveal any available publications that you can read.
2 The Store
If this is the first time youve opened it, there should be nothing there, so tap on the Store button, to the right. This launches the App Store since the Newsstands store is a subset of it. Here you can download publications.
3 Search field Theres no obvious search field

to find what youre looking for so tap on one of the buttons at the bottom of the screen to get out of Newsstand and reveal the search field.
4 Results
Lets look for a magazine to purchase. Type Macworld in the search field and see what you come up with. Select Macworld UK Magazine from the results.
5 Preview
You can tap on its icon in the list to see a detailed description of what youre about to get. Macworlds price includes an issue of your choice to download.
6 Download
Reordering
Select your magazine and itll download to your iPad. To get back to Newsstand, press the Home button once. Youll then see your new magazine waiting for you.
Magazines are organised in the Newsstand in the order in which they were purchased, with the latest ones appearing on the left. This can be changed, just like with regular apps: tap and hold on one of them and they all start to jiggle, then drag and drop them into the order that works best for you.
7 Issue selection
Following the Macworld example, you then get to choose your free issue. You can also purchase any other issue on an individual basis.
8 Enjoy
Once downloaded, you can then select your issue and swipe through the pages (left to right, not up and down). Tap once on the page to reveal a set of menus to help with navigation.

Capture great photographs and save them direct to your new iPad
THE NEW IPAD HAS AN AMAZING SET OF CAMERAS. Much better than those found on the iPad 2, which appeared to be the same type as the one found on the iPod touch. However, such poor images wouldnt have done the new iPads amazing screen justice, so Apple beefed up the camera and brought it on par to the iPhone 4, capable of taking 5MP shots. It can also record video in high-denition (1080p) just like the iPhone 4S. In addition to this vastly superior camera, Apple has updated the Camera app, making it much easier to take photos with this rather bulky device compared with a regular camera or even an iPhone. But this improvement was also brought to the iPad 2, as long as it too was updated to iOS 5.1, so even though that camera is of a lesser quality, you wont struggle to take pictures with your iPad 2 any longer. This tutorial will guide you through the new Camera apps various options at your disposal. Follow this guide and youll be capturing amazing photographs in no time at all

1 To the right
Launch the Camera app. You may notice it looks quite different from the iPhone version. Rotate your new iPad and check out that the record button stays on the right.
2 Focus You may spot white lines forming a hollow square appear from time to time. This is your cameras focus. Tap anywhere to manually tell the new iPad where to focus.
3 The grid Tap on the Options button, lower left of the interface and slide the Grid slider to On. Thin lines now appear to help you frame your shot based on the rule of thirds.
4 Take a shot When youre ready, take a shot by pressing on the big record button. If you prefer, you can also use the physical volume up button to take your photo.
Slide the slider, lower right of the new iPad to the right to turn your stills camera into a camcorder. When you hit the record button, youll see a timer, top right.
5 Video
6 Roll call To see the photos youve taken, tap

on the button, lower left of the interface. This shows you the last shot you took. Swipe to the left to see others, one at a time.
Trimming
You cant edit video, but you can trim your footage to get rid of unwanted seconds at the start and finish. To do this, tap on your video to reveal a mini timeline at the top. Drag its edges inward and tap on Trim to delete the parts you dont want.
7 Edit Tap on the Camera Roll button to see thumbnails of all your shots. You can also edit your photos with the Edit button, like rotating shots, cropping, or enhancing them.
8 Done You can also share your shots in various ways or delete a failed image. To get back to your camera and take more shots, tap on the blue Done button and youll be able to continue shooting.

NOW THAT YOUVE TAKEN YOUR PICTURES AND, IF youre using iCloud, sent them to your Photo Stream, you might just want to leave them there. However, no matter how good a camera you possess, some judicious editing can always help to improve the nal result. You might want to make the colours and contrast really stand out, and sometimes a small crop is all thats needed to make a good picture a fantastic one. If youve taken a photo of friends and they all have the dreaded red-eye, youll want to get rid of that. Luckily, thanks to the power of the dual-core A5X chip inside the new iPad, your tablet is a powerful image-editing tool. The Retina display also helps you to be more accurate, thanks to the fantastic detail it provides. The new iPad itself lets you make your pictures look better with a single tap. It can also help you with some of the usual pitfalls of photography. If you take a shot of people with the ash, then sometimes theyll have red-eye. To help you make your subjects look a little less like theyve been possessed by the devil you can remove it quickly and simply. As well as this, theres a crop tool that allows you to cut out the best bit of a photo and reframe your shot for a better result. If you want to take image editing further you can download any number of apps to help you do more with your pictures, too.

1 Start editing Go to your images in the Photos app and then tap on the one that youd liketo begin editing. Simply tap on Edit to bring upthe iPads editing options.
2 Editing tools The new iPads editing tools are displayed across the bottom of the screen. You can rotate, enhance, remove red-eye and crop your image. Simply tap on one to get started.
3 Rotate your pictures If youve taken a picture at a funny angle, or just want to have some fun with a picture, you can rotate it. Tap on Rotate at the bottom left to spin your image.
4 Enhance your images The iPad has a

simple Enhance mode that improves the colour and contrast of your images automatically. Tap the magic wand icon to enhance your photos.
If the image has been taken with a ash on the iPhone (or other camera) it can end up with nasty red-eye ruining your shot. Tap on the red-eye button and then on the infected eye.
5 Fix red-eye
6 Tap the eye Tap each of the eyes to remove

the red circle. When done, tap on Apply to save your changes. It might not always work perfectly, but its generally e ective.
App Store
The built-in photos for editing photos are pretty good, but they are very basic. You can get more advanced image-editing tools from the App Store. Many of these are free or, at the very least, cheap.
7 Crop images To crop images tap on the Crop tool then drag in the corners of the grid to suit. You can move the crop box around until you nd the best t. Tap on Crop when youre done.
8 Constrain crop You dont have to use the standard crop box on your images. Tap on Constrain to see the various crop ratios you can select for your photos great help when printing.

Whats more, the new touch screen functionality makes it more intuitive and accessible than ever before. With a little practice youll be able to work on your images with a number of clearly dened tools, before cataloguing them, tagging them and sharing them with friends via email or social networks. Show original Hitting this tab will remove all the changes youve made to an image and revert back to the original shot. Just swipe this slider to the right.
Look at the loupe Touch the screen with two fingers and twist to bring up the magnifying glass tool, allowing you to zoom in on your shot.
Editing tools Youll find all your filters, brushes, effects and cropping tools here. A blue marker above a tab means youve already used it in your image.
Flagged up Tap the flag button and your image will be filed in the Flagged folder for future reference. Tap it again to remove the flag.

1 Organisation iPhoto organises your images by Album, Photo, Event and Journal. Pictures you take using the iPads camera will appear in a Camera Roll folder. To import images from your computer simply sync them in iTunes.
2 Select an image
To edit an image, either tap on a folder in Albums or Events or cycle through your image library in Photos. Once youve found the shot you want to work on, tap it once to bring it up, then hit the Edit tab.
3 Straighten up This shot is clearly off centre. To correct it, hit the Crop & Straighten button bottom left and slowly drag the wheel at the bottom until the horizon is horizontal.
4 Enhancing colours
iPhoto has a number of tools that let you sharpen the colours in your image. Hit the Auto-Enhance button (the one that looks like a magic wand).
5 Do it yourself
If you want a more hands-on approach, hit the Colour Palette tab on the bottom menu bar to bring up a variety of more detailed tools that let you tweak saturation, sky colour, vegetation clarity, skin tones and white balance.
Reckon your image might look better in black and white? No problem just bring up the E ects menu from the tool bar. As you can see, there are a range of di erent lters to choose from select one then swipe from left to right.
6 Add a lter
Built in help
iPhoto offers one of the best help features weve seen in a piece of Apple software. Just hit the question mark tab on the top menu bar and a comprehensive overlay of labels explaining what every button does will appear on the screen. Tap it one more time to toggle back to the normal view.
7 Remove blemishes
If theres a smudge on your lens or a small unwanted detail in your shot you can quickly remove it using iPhotos smart Repair tool. Youll nd it under the Brushes icon.
8 Title and share Once youve nished tweaking your image, you can label it for future reference by tapping on add a caption at the top of the screen. Finally, tap Share.

THE NEW iPAD DOUBLES AS A FANTASTIC DEVICE for taking photographs. Its large screen make snapping a joy, and the new powerful cameras ensure you get high-quality photos. You can quickly end up with hundreds of pictures and these are kept in the Photos app. By default these are stored in the Camera Roll. However, as you take more pictures, it can be tricky nding the good ones. To keep things in order you can create your own photo albums to collect the pictures you like, or to help you sort through the various places youve taken photos in. As well as the Camera Roll, the Photo Stream album will be in the Photos app as standard. Photo Stream holds the last 1,000 images and makes it easy to share them. If youve turned on the cameras Location Services feature it can also be used to sort your images by location. Simply tap on the various pins to see how many pictures there are in that location. Putting your pictures in albums makes it really easy for you to create fantastic slideshows that you can display on your new iPads screen or use with AirPlay to show o on your big-screen TV. Open the Photos app and tap on Edit. Now tap on Add and you will be asked to give the album a name. Give your album a name and then tap Save.
2 Add images
Select photos for the new album by tapping on your existing albums and selecting the pictures to add. Selected images havea blue tick. Tap Done to add these.
3 Create an album If youre looking at your Camera Roll and want to make an album, just tap on the top-right icon then tap on the images. Tap on Add To then Add to New Album to do this.
4 Add to existing albums
If youve created an album already, you can easily add more images to it. Select the images as described in Step Three and tap on Add to Existing Album.
If you have the location information settings turned on, you can see exactly where your images were taken. Tap on Places to see the pins then tap on a pin to see the images.
5 Places
Once all your images are in the appropriate album, you can create automatic slideshows. Simply tap on an image in the album then the play icon to get to the slideshow options.

Remember that you can use the screen gestures to get more out of thePhotos app. Pinch to zoom in toyour pictures to get a closer look.
7 AirPlay pictures If you have an Apple TV you can show o your images on the big screen. Tap on the image then tap the AirPlay icon to choose which screen to show the image on.
8 Share your images Tap on an image then the sharing icon at the bottom-left to share your pictures via email, iMessage and Tweet, or do a host of other things to share your pictures.

1 Getting started
First things first, theres not a separate app for video capture so dont go looking for one. Just tap on your iPads Camera app to get started.
2 Hit record To begin filming, switch to video mode by toggling the slider in the bottom right of the screen to the camera icon. Then set up your shot and hit the red record button.
3 Stay in focus The iPad includes a clever autofocus feature to help keep your footage sharp. Just tap once on the screen at the area you want in focus and it will automatically make adjustments.
4 Keeping time
As youre filming a timer will appear in the top right hand corner of the screen. Bear in mind that video can take up a lot of memory space, so keep your videos short.

5 Switching lenses
If you want to switch between the forward and back-facing camera lenses, just tap the icon on the bottom menu bar. However, remember that the back facing camera o ers a much higher picture resolution.
6 Video playback When youre done

You can record video in either portrait or landscape mode. Landscape generally looks better on a television, but both are pretty good for just showing off on the iPad. Dont switch from one to the other while filming though. The display will orientate itself and you think everything is okay, but itll be recording footage at a 90 degree angle. Be careful to stick to either one or the other.
7 Share with friends
To immediately share the clip with a friend, upload it to YouTube or simply email it to yourself, just tap the arrow icon on the top menu bar and make your choice.
8 Editing in iMovie To really make the most

of your footage, its worth picking the iMovie app (2.99). Apples acclaimed editing software lets you cut clips together into a full movie.

You can use an account you already have or create a brand new one. In addition, you can also use multiple accounts. So, if you have personal and business accounts you can tweet to both and keep your personal and private accounts separate. The Twitter integration isnt fully complete as you cant use Siri to send a tweet just yet. If you have a Twitter app on your iPad you can dictate your message into the text entry eld, but you cant ask Siri to send your tweet directly. 3 Add text Your image will be attached and shown as being paper-clipped to your tweet. The number of remaining characters is also shown. Here we have 93 left for the rest of this tweet.
4 Allow location sharing
If youd like to let your followers know where youre posting from tap on Add Location. Youll have to allow Twitter to share your location by tapping on OK.
Once youve been located the arrow will turn purple to indicate its found you. Tap on X to delete the location information. When youre ready to tweet tap Send.
5 Send a tweet
If you just want to tweet where you are and not attach a picture, open the Maps app and tap the red pin of your location, then tap the blue i button and Share Location.
6 Share your location

Tweeting from the Twitter app is still possible and even easier with Twitter integration. Youll get a better feel for whats going on, on Twitter if you use the app. Photo andlocation sharing is possible both from within the Twitter app as well as the maps and Photos apps.
7 How to share To share your location with Twitter you just need to tap on Tweet, and your location will be recorded and a Tweet created and sent out to all your followers.
8 Current location As with picture sharing the location data will be paper-clipped to the tweet. My Current Location is automatically added, though you can delete this, if you wish.

Now that Twitter has been integrated into the system setting of iOS, you can combine Twitter friends with your contacts. This means that your new iPad can search through your Twitter friends and where they match people in your address book, automatically add their Twitter username to the Contacts app. As well as this, your new iPad will drag across your friends avatars, so theres consistency across social media and contacts apps. When they change their picture, this is reected in your Contacts app. The other advantage to this close integration is that you can tweet your friends directly from the Contacts app. Simply nd the person you want to send a message to and tap on their Twitter username. As you might expect, you can add location data and photos to the tweet before you send it. 3 Merge Twitter Go to Settings and then tap on Twitter. Once here, you can see how many of your contacts share Twitter information.

Once the merge has nished, simply tap on a contact to see their Twitterusername. Their accounts avatar will also have been copied across.
6 Tweet options

With a 3G internet connection, the faster your browser can render a page the better as it all reduces the time you have to wait to see the page you want. Some website designs make it dicult to see the actual content that you want to get at . This isnt too much of an issue where you can pinch to zoom in or double-tap on text to get a closer view, but it can still be a pain when you just want to read the text. To get a better view of the main body text on web pages Apple has included a new feature in Safari called Reader. Reader automatically cuts out all the design elements of a page and just gives you the text. Reader is great for longer blog posts and news stories. You can enlarge the text to make it even easier to read, too. In the Reader view you also have quick access to other sharing options such as Reading list, Tweet and Print. The Reader function might not work on every web page, and youllhave to wait for the page to fully load before you can take advantage of this feature, but it makes reading on the web a much more pleasant experience. 3 Font size One of the best features of Reader is it gives you control over the text size. Tap on the AA icon at the top-left then tap to select for larger or smaller text.
4 Sharing service As well as giving you a clearer view of web pages, Reader lets you share a page in a number or ways. Send articles via email, Twitter or even print them out.
Even if you make the text size in Reader view very large, any images that are in the main body of the article remain in the place they are supposed to be in.
5 Images in posts
If you use Twitter you can quickly let your followers know about an article, directly from the Reader view. Tap on the Share icon then on Tweet.
6 Tweet an article
Mobile sites
If you visit a website that has a dedicated mobile version you may not be able to use the Safari Reader function. Navigating to the desktop version of the site will allow you to see the Reader function.
7 Email an article If youre not on Twitter you can still share any articles via email. Tap on the Share icon and select Email, and your link and subject will be automatically lled in.
8 Normal view Once youve read the article you can go back to the standard web view to see and read all the elements that Reader cut out. Simply tap on Done.

Use the Maps app to help you navigate your way around with ease
IF YOU ARE FOREVER GETTING LOST, THEN THE new iPad could prove to be a real lifesaver. Its great at knowing where you are, even if you arent quite sure. The powerful GPS inside your handset combines with local mobile phone reception towers to give incredibly accurate positioning. This means that Apples device is great at mapping, which is why one of the default apps on every new iPad is Google Maps. The app, used in conjunction with the GPS capabilities of the new iPad, makes it incredibly simple to nd where you are, and provide directions for you to make it from A to B as quickly as possible. You can map your journey by car, public transport or by walking, and there are alternative routes for you to choose from, too. You can search around you for local businesses or, indeed, companies in any location. So if, for example, you need to nd the nearest garage, you can use your new iPad to nd it and then have it tell you the quickest route. Googles maps app can show you the standard map view of your route or, if you prefer, itll show you the satellite view overhead. Theres also the option to get a hybrid view of the two together. You can even see the street view if its available, giving you an idea of what your nal destination looks like. If you have an AirPrint-compatible printer, you can get hard copies of the map before you set out on your journey just in case your battery runs out. If thegraphics get too much for you, its possible to see your journey in list view so that its just the instructions.

2 Suggested routes After a few seconds your route will be returned with alterative options if youre going by car or public transport. Each journey will come with an ETA and route distance.
3 Walking
If youre not in the car, tap on the walking icon at the top to instantly render a route for getting to your destination on two feet.
4 Search locally
If you need to find a local business, tap on Search and then type in its name. The nearest results will show as dropped pins. To get a route to them by tapping the pin.
5 More options To see a satellite view or to

show the tra c congestion on your route, tap the curled up page corner in the bottom right.
If you nd the map view toodaunting, you can see a list of instructions for your journey. Tap on the page curl and then List to see your route details.
6 Routes as a list

Thanks to Google Maps, you can now see what the state of the roads will be along your journey. As you look at the map youll see that some of the roads have flashing red lines on them. This means theres congestion, so these roads should be avoided.
7 Print your maps As well as having all the di erent view options if you have an AirPrint-enabled device, you can print them out from your new iPad. Tap on the page curl icon and select Print. 8 Street view Once you have seen your route and printed out the steps, you can use the Maps app to show you the street view of you destination so you know exactly where you are going.

Thanks to the AirPlay technology thats built into iOS 5 you can put the output of your new iPad screen onto your TV screen. Youll need an Apple TV to connect the two, but once youve hooked it up, sharing is easy. You can show video and pictures on the big screen. Lots of the TV and video apps have AirPlay enabled too, allowing you to have the television signal sent from your iPad to your TV. In addition, you can send the audio from the music app over to AirPlay-enabled devices many new iPod and iPhone hi- docks let you wirelessly stream music to them. AirPlay Mirroring also means that even if an app doesnt have a designated AirPlay capability you can still show it o on the big screen. Even if you rotate the screen, the image on your TV will rotate, and you can pinch to zoom in and out. As well as photo slideshows, music, video and games, you can AirPlay your web browser to give yourself a front-room browsing experience.

4 Turn AirPlay on The AirPlay menu will list

allof your Apple TVs, should you have more than one. Tap on Apple TV then slide Mirroring to On. Tap Done when youre finished.

Its entirely possible to ll up even a 64GB iPad just with apps. Its twice as easy to ll up a 32GB model too. This would leave you no space for music, videos or any of the other fun stu. Thankfully, iOS 5 lets you see exactly which apps are taking up the most space. This is great if you are running low on storage and need to dump some apps you dont need or use. Remember that you can always re-download any of your apps. Deleting apps to make temporary space is perfectly plausible now and easily done. The ability to back up your iPad to iCloud is great for your phone security and this storage can also be managed right on your tablet. 5 iCloud storage Your iCloud account includes

6 iCloud backup You can back up your iPad

to the iCloud; simply turn iCloud Backup on. Remember that your computer will no longer back up your iPad when connected to iTunes.
Music app
Not all of the apps and associated data can be removed its impossible to delete your Music app, for example. This is good as the last thing you wantto do is accidentally delete all of your music.
7 Space required If you need more storage space on the iCloud server you can always purchaseup to 50GB a year from Apple. Its 70 for 50GB and 28 for 20GB.

There are 16 templates to choose from that range from blank pages to three-column layouts with images and charts. Just because Pages for the iPad is a mobile app doesnt meant its not powerful. You can edit margins and page layouts, as well as tabs and rulers. You can have images in your documents and resize and rotate them to suit. If someone emails you a Microsoft Word or Plain text document Pages can open these, so its compatible with other apps, too. Obviously, its unlikely you are going to be writing your next 100,000 word novel on the iPad, but the keyboard is ne for getting your thoughts down on the page. If you nd the keyboard a bit of a pain theres the new dictation option in iOS 5 that lets you speak your words directly onto the page. Pages has iCloud syncing built right in so changes you make are always tracked and any edits you make on the road are ready for you when you get back to the oce. 1 Create a document To make a new blank
document from a template tap on the + icon. If you have a Pages document stored elsewhere, you can connect here to download it.
2 Template chooser When you create a new document you can choose between a selection of ready-made templates, or just select Blank to start creating your own document style.
3 Add text When you open up a new template the space is filled with dummy text. To edit it, simply double-tap and the keyboard will pop up for you to start typing.
4 Add graphics You can easily add charts, tables and pictures to your documents. Tap on the photo logo in the toolbar to add these elements to your pages.
If youd like to change the size of one of the visual elements, just tap on it and grab one of the blue anchor points to alter the scale. Tap on Done when youre nished.

Pages may be on a tablet, but its still quite advance. You can edit document setup, such as paper size, by tapping on the spanner icon then Document Setup.

If you are emailed Mirosoft Word files, you can share them from within Pages. Email documents, print them, share them in iTunes or at iWork.com.
7 Word count To get a permanently displayed word count you need to edit the settings. Tap on the Spanner icon in the toolbar then on Settings, and turn Word Count ON or OFF.
8 Edit styles
If youd like to edit the font or style of any of the text its really easy. Tap on any text or a blank space then tap on the i in the toolbar to make the changes.

CREATING SPREADSHEETS IS HARDLY THE MOST exciting of tasks, but Numbers for the iPad is a great piece of software. Its surprisingly powerful for a tool thats designed to work on a tablet. Thanks to the fast A5X chip inside the new IPad you can use the tablet for business documents. The Retina display screen also makes creating and editing documents a breeze. Though the iPad version of Numbers isnt what you could call a fully featured application it does have a lot of power. Tabbed documents, equations and charts can all be created on Apples tablet. Combine Numbers with iCloud compatibility and you have a truly mobile oce application. Start your spreadsheet on the new iPad at home and work on it during your trip to work on your iPhone. As well as starting from scratch, there are templates designed to help you get your data into a spreadsheet and looking good in the shortest time possible. The standard image browser tools are also available, so you can add your own images to your documents with ease. If you have colleagues that dont use Numbers, you can still use Numbers as it allows you to export in Excel format, as well as letting you create a PDF that you can share with just about anyone. 1 Template chooser When you open a new Numbers document you can choose from a selection of templates to get exactly the result youre after. Tap on one to get started.
2 Table styles You can easily change your tablestyle if its not to your taste. Simply tap on acell, then tap on the i in the Toolbar. Select a tableor tap on table options.
3 Edit cell text To edit the text in a cell doubletap on it, then tap in the text entry bar. Ifitsnot a plaintext cell, youll have to tap on the T in the toolbar.
4 Charts To add a chart to your spreadsheet tap on the picture icon in the toolbar then select Charts. Here you can add a host of chart types to your document.
5 New sheet To add a new sheet to your

Numbers document simply tap on the tab with the+ icon. Now you can choose between a new sheet or form.
If youd like a cell to be a currency or a percentage, instead of just a number, single-tap on a cell then in the i in the toolbar. Select Format.

It makes sense integrating the Numbers app with iCloud. If you link the account to Apples application, youll be able to store Numbers filesin the cloud and always have them to hand.

If youd like to edit the appearance of text in a cell by making it bold, for instance, tap on the cell then on the i in the toolbar. Select Cells and choose your styles.
8 Share and Print To share your Numbers spreadsheet tap on the spanner icon in the toolbar. Here you have options to send to iTunes, Print or email the document.

Double tap To edit an element on screen, be it text or image, simply double-tap it. You can pinch to zoom in or out on a page.

Save changes When you are done, simply tap on Done to get back to making your presentation.

1 iCloud When you launch Keynote you are given the option to use iCloud for storage and syncing your
documents. Simply tap on use iCloud to make sure that your work is saved to iCloud.
2 Create a new slideshow to create a new presentation tap on the + symbol at the top-left, then on Create presentation. you can select a Keynote file from itunes or another remote storage here.
3 Keynote theme Keynote has a number of fantastic themes for you to choose from. Some are simple black or white, others offer more texture. tap on one to start building your presentation. 4 get started When youve picked a theme youll see the document has a single page for you to start editing. tap on the + symbol at the bottom-left of the screen to add more pages.

5 Add text To add your own title just double-tap on the text and the keyboard will pop up. Type to add your titles, or you can dictate your text, too, by tapping on the microphone icon to start recording. 6 Resize and move and image To change the size of a picture just double-tap on it and the blue
anchor points appear. Resize or reshape the image, or create a mask to hide the edges of the picture.
Though you only get one example image when you start your new presentation on the iPad, each theme has a variety of pages to match. This means you end up with a stylish and consistent look to all your Keynote presentation slides.
7 Toolbar For any selected element simply tap the i button to see what editing options are available; images can be flipped and given styled boarders, for instance. 8 Tools To access more of the setting you just tap on the spanner icon. Here, youll see advanced options and extras like Presenter Notes. Youll also be able to print and share your presentation from here.

Forget the name, its the iPad itself that matters By Dan Moren
hose of us Apple fans who were around in the 90s suered through a barrage of incomprehensible product names: the Macintosh Quadra 660AV; the Macintosh Performa 6300CD; the Power Macintosh 6300/160. Not to mention dozens of others, before we even include the many Mac clones created by third parties. It was a proliferation predicated on the way that Apples competitors did business and still do, if the HP Omni 220 Quad series is any indication. It seems only logical that Apple wants to avoid the slippery slope of its competitorss terrifying product names, where exaggeration is piled on top of numbers piled on top of hyperbolic references. I mean, how do people walk into a store and say Hello, Id like to purchase a Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. With a straight face, anyway. By comparison, the iPhone naming scheme iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S looks inane. Every subsequent iteration has not only tacked on a new sux to the iPhone brand, theyve also each introduced an entirely new expectation of how that sequence will progress only to throw it from the train in the very next version. Its as if the company rolled out the iPhone 1, followed by the iPhone A, followed by the iPhone I. What exactly comes next in that sequence? Constantly reinventing a nomenclature is unsustainable. Is every iPad between now and 2022 going to have a dierent number, letter, or some combination appended? Is Apple going to eventually reach the iPad 13GS+ Extreme? Id argue thats exactly what the company doesnt want. Not that the lack of a label doesnt provide its own challenges. Will Apple call the next version The new new iPad? The newest iPad yet? But I dont think that matters. After all, if theres one thing the company doesnt have trouble with, its marketing products. The bottom line: Ask your average consumer what kind of iPhone they own and chances are their answer will be The white one. In the same way that those users dont care about processor speeds, amount of RAM, or how many Gs of networking they have, they dont necessarily care about what version of an iPad they have all that they care is that they have an iPad. And thats good enough for Apple.
