AUCTION TERMS
1. This is an electronic auction conducted by Classical Numismatic Group, Inc. (CNG). Bidding in the auction constitutes acceptance of the CNG web site Terms of Use, of which these Auctions Terms are a part. 2. The property in this auction is offered for sale by CNG for itself and as agent for other consignors. We reserve the right to prohibit any bidder from participating in the auction, to reject any bid, to determine the opening price, to set bidding increments, to withdraw any lot, to bid on behalf of CNG, and to permit the consignor to bid on his own lots. 3. A 12% Buyers fee will be added to the hammer price. 4. All items are guaranteed genuine. Attribution, date, condition and other descriptions are the opinion of the cataloguer, and no warranty is expressed or implied. Please note that an auction sale is not an approval sale. Lots may be returned only in the case of misdescription or lack of authenticity. Lots examined by the successful bidder prior to the close of the sale may be returned only in the case of lack of authenticity. Any claim of misdescription must be made within 5 days of receipt of material. Any claim of lack of authenticity must be made in writing by the original purchaser immediately after discovery that an item is not authentic, and upon making such a claim the original purchaser must return the lot to CNG in the same condition as at the time of the auction. Coins that have been encapsulated (slabbed) by a grading and/or authentication service may not be returned for any reason, including authenticity, if they have been removed from the encapsulation (slab). If payment is made by credit card, rights of return are governed by these Auction Terms which supercede any rights of return promulgated by the card issuer. 5. Invoices are due and payable immediately upon receipt. Interest and late fees of 2.0% per month, or at a highest rate permitted by law, whichever is less, from the date of the auction, shall be payable on invoices not settled within 30 days of the auction date. Payment may be made by check or bank wire. Credit cards (Visa or MasterCard) will be accepted; credit card payments will not be accepted more than 14 days after the sale date. Payment by check must be made in either US dollars ($) drawn on a US bank or British sterling () drawn on a British bank. All successful bidders outside North America and the United Kingdom will be charged an additional $20 fee for bank charges that are the result of international wire transfer fees; this fee will be deducted for credit card or check payment as described above. Bidding is only open to those who have registered on the Site for the electronic auction, and have been authorized to bid by CNG staff. Bidding is permitted only to parties who can lawfully form contracts and lawfully participate in the auction under applicable laws. Title does not pass until lots are paid in full. Upon receipt of lots, the buyer assumes full responsibility for loss or damage. Delivery to the buyers address of record constitutes receipt by the buyer regardless of the identity of the person accepting delivery. 7. Estimates and bids are in US dollars ($US), and bids must be in even dollar ($) amounts. CNG places an estimate and an opening price on each lot. Estimates are intended as a guide only and not as a statement of opinion of value. Ordinarily the opening price is 60% of the estimate. CNGs electronic auction site software will execute bids on behalf of all bidders up to their maximum limit. Subject to the opening prices, bids will be executed at one bidding increment over the next highest bid. In the case of identical bids, the earliest bid wins. Once a bid is placed it may only be cancelled by CNG staff. Bidders are responsible for errors in bidding.

The Robert and Julius Diez Collection

Classical Numismatic Group, in association with Gitbud & Naumann, are pleased to offer selections of Greek coinage from the Diez Collection. This collection contains a number of coins with pedigrees to important sales of the early twentieth century. Most of these pieces, especially those from Magna Graecia and Sicily, have not been seen on the market since their appearance in sales over a century ago. Prof. Dr. Robert Diez (1844 - 1922) was the son of Emil Diez, the mayor of Pneck. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Dresden, a city renowned for its culture and artistic associations. There, Robert studied art, becoming a well-known sculptor in the process. Much of his work was created for public moments in Germany, including the Reichstag in Berlin. A member of both the Dresden and Berlin Academy of Arts, Diez was influenced by the sculpture of ancient Greece. This naturally drew him to ancient Greek coins, which he collected until his death in Loschwitz, a district of Dresden, in 1922. Munich-born Julius Diez (1870 - 1957), like his relative, was an artist, professor, and intellectual. A painter and a graphic artist, Diez was influenced by the prevailing artistic trends of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among his works were book illustrations and items of ephemera (postcards, etc.). At the same time, Diez employed his artistic abilities to liberate art from conservative constraints. Besides publishing illustrations in the satirical journal Simplicissimus, Diez, in 1908, created a bookplate for the author and fellow member of the Mnchener Secession, George Habich. This last work is notable not just for the social association, but also because two Greek coins were included in the design. Diez was also an associate of the German poet and writer, Richard Fedor Leopold Dehmel. While it is uncertain which of the two men, Prof. Dr. Robert Diez or Julius Diez, started and built it, the Diez Collection offers a unique window into the collecting of Greek coins at the beginning of the last century. Of the 176 coins in this sale, only 26 are not pedigreed to earlier sales. Most of those that are pedigreed were sold by the important German and Austrian auction houses of the time A. Hess Nachf., Brder Egger, and Dr. Jacob Hirsch and came from important collections including Consul Weber, Virzi, Philipsen, and von Schennis, as well as the Berlin Knigliches Mnzkabinett duplicates which were originally part of Imhoof-Blumers collection. The few other pedigreed coins were purchased from smaller German dealers, such as K. Schild in Berlin during World War II, and C.G. Thieme, who operated in Leipzig and Dresden between the 1870s and 1933. Since many of the coins in this collection where not illustrated in the original sales catalogs, their illustration in this sale will provide a useful supplement to those important sales of the first two decades of the twentieth century.

From the Robert and Julius Diez Collection. Williams lists the specimens from these dies under plated, which is likely correct due to the low weights of the two coins he cites. However, the present piece is much heavier, and correct for this issue, suggesting this might be the prototype used for the plated examples.

The dies used at Katane in the mid-late 5th century BC display some of the finest classical style engraving in Sicilian numismatics. Parallels in style between issues of Katane in this period and contemporary signed pieces from other mints have led numismatists to assign many dies to the work of master engravers such as Euainetos. The present piece, however, is signed , for the artist Prokles, whose full signature is known on tetradrachms at Katane in this period (cf. CNG 57, lot 83). This Prokles is thought to be the same artist who engraved a number of magnificent didrachm, hemidrachm, and litra dies at Naxos (cf. Cahn 108, 122, and 136, respectively). The quantity of his work there suggests that Naxos was his home (see also ACGC pp. 224-5).

Founded about 730/29 BC by the colonists from the neighboring Chalkidian colony of Naxos, the city of Katane was located on the eastern coast of Sicily on the fertile Katane plain near the southern limits of the lava flows from Mt. Aitna. Like its neighbor to the north, Leontini, the city prospered from its exploitation of the fertile plain for the production of barley. When it began striking coinage in the mid-fifth century BC, Katane included on its issues the local river, Amenanos, which was responsible for the fertility of the soil. Like other contemporary Greek riverine depictions, the river-god is portrayed as a human-headed bull. Later issues, however, perhaps influenced by other regional coinages, give the river-god a more youthful and androgynous appearance. Katanes prosperity attracted the attention of its immediate and more-powerful neighbor Syracuse. In 476 BC, Hieron I expelled the population from Katane, driving them north to Leontini. In turn, Katane was refounded with a new body of colonists consisting of Syracusan citizens and Dorian mercenaries. Renamed Aitna, it issued a short-lived and very rare coinage, featuring the head of Silenos on the obverse and either Zeus or his thunderbolt on the reverse. This Syracusan overlordship was short-lived, and in 461 BC the original inhabitants of Katane were restored to the city, while the inhabitants of Aitna were withdrawn to the fortress of Inessa, which they renamed Aitna. To commemorate the reinstatement of its original inhabitants, Katane struck a remarkable series of tetradrachms featuring the river-god Amenanos on the obverse and Nike holding a wreath, diadem, or fillet on the reverse. Several different adjuncts, such as a Silenos or a ketos are included on the obverse as well. Such additions may be evidence of regional influences resulting from Katanes recent history. Such is the case after about 460 BC when this issue was replaced by one featuring a quadriga similar to that of Syracuse, but without the additional Nike, on the obverse and the laureate head of Apollo, similar to that of Leontini, on the reverse. Katane continued to prosper until the late 5th century BC, when the city entered a period when it became continually embroiled in conflicts between other states. In 415 BC, Katane was attacked and captured by Athens, which used the city as the base of operations for the first year of the famous Sicilian Expedition. Later, in 403 BC, Katane fell to Dionysios I of Syracuse, who, like Hieron I before him, re-founded the city, this time with Campanian mercenaries. In the period leading up to this conflict with Syracuse, the coinage of Katane underwent another transformation. By the late 5th century BC, the numismatic art of Sicily had achieved an unparalleled degree of quality in the Greek world. This was due in large part to the great masters whose signatures are boldly displayed on their minute canvasses: Choirion, Euainetos, Eumenos, Exakestidas, Kimon, and others. Most of these artists are known from their work in the Syracusan series, but a few also created masterful works of art at other cities as well. Two of these, Herakleidas and Choirion, created a magnificent facing head types that are a standout among the famed Katanean issues. Certainly influenced by the Kimonean facing-head portraits of Arethusa on tetradrachms at Syracuse, the subject here was the god Apollo, whose profile portrait was featured on the reverse of earlier issues of Katane. While the portrait by Herakleidas features a partially facing head of Apollo, the gods portrait on the die of Choirion appears in a fully frontal aspect. One may sense the artists attempt to portray Apollo in a naturalistic form, retaining through his countenance an attitude of an otherworldly god, while introducing a delicacy that conveys the thought of a living being. The hair falls in individual locks reminiscent of Arethusa of Syracuse, but rather than radiating outward as if in an aquatic environment, they are depicted in a downward splayed fashion, evoking the picture of a woodland entity whose natural appearance would retain a hint of the wild. His laurel wreath is likewise splayed, as though placed upon his head directly from the laurel bush, without any thought of molding or preparation. In contrast, his wide eyes gaze outward with an obvious power that belies his heavenly nature. The viewer has the impression that he is looking into the face of a living god. The work of Choirion and Herakleidas represented the high point of numismatic artistry at Katane, a period that was cut short by the conquest of the city by Dionysios I. In the early 4th century, Katanes close relationship with Syracuse made the city a target for the Carthaginians. In 396 BC, they captured Katane, and held it for about 50 years, until it was finally liberated by Timoleon in the 340s BC. When Pyrrhos landed in Sicily in 278 BC, Katane was the first Sicilian city to welcome him, opening its gates and receiving him with great pomp (Diod. 19. 110; 22. 8). By the time of the First Punic War, however, Katane submitted itself to Rome, a friendly arrangement that allowed the city to regain much of its former prosperity. Katane was ravaged a final time, by Sextus Pompey, during the Roman Civil War, but its refoundation as a colony under Augustus resulted in a renewed prosperity as a provincial town.

Dionysios assumed power in 405 BC and immediately set out to make Syracuse the greatest and best fortified city in all of Greece. He was defending against the renewed imperialistic expansion of Carthage. Three times he defeated the Carthaginians, bringing further prestige and wealth to Syracuse. During his reign, the Syracuse navy became the most powerful in the Mediterranean, allowing Syracuse to expand her territorial control over much of southern Italy. Dionysios reintroduced the large and ostentatious silver dekadrachms, a denomination that had not been used in Syracuse since the issue of the Demareteion decades earlier. Dionysios entrusted two of the greatest local numismatic artists, Kimon and Euainetos, to design these impressive pieces. The regard for these coins in modern times is reflected by the fact that they are considered a must for any first rank collection of Greek coins.
