Blueberries
Blueberries are a strange fruit. Im not sure why I find them so strange, but there is just something about them that I mysteriously enjoy. When you think of berries in general, they are not a sweet fruit. Raspberries and blackberries are very strong in flavor, and strawberries go great with peanut butter or sour cream and brown sugar, but blueberries have this flavor that only comes out when its used in other methods of cooking. The history of the blueberry is a little fuzzy. It only makes sense because of the nature of fruit being long-lived. The English blueberry that we see and eat in North America actually originated in North America. There are other forms of blueberries that come from other continents, with twenty species total. The commercial blueberry you see in stores grows in Eastern and North/ Central North America while most other species of blueberries are considered wild and grow all over the world.

New Grocery Sprouts Up in Norman

Sprouts Farmers Market, 559 W. Main St., is new, exciting and growing on people. Festooned with colorful fruits, veggies, bulk items, meats and more, Sprouts has something for everyone. Sprouts opened on March 27 and its still packed with people who are looking for great food at a great price during its grand opening event. Omnivores, vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free individuals can all find something yummy at Sprouts. With many organic and clearly labeled gluten free items, its easy to find items to pack the pantry. Vegans can choose from tofu in the chilly case or find it packed and ready in the food aisles. Organic milk awaits shoppers alongside traditional choices, and the cheese selections are plentiful. First-time Norman shopper and vegetarian Joanna Wall was impressed with the soy products. They have a great selection of frozen soy products, Wall said. Another first-timer, Tara Calhoun, likes the variety of foods and the central Norman location of the store. I like that its in the center of town, Calhoun said. It has the things you find in regular stores plus all-natural and glutenfree items. Its nice to have it all in one place. Sprouts offers dried fruits in many varieties including mangoes, blueberries, ginger, papaya, pomegranate, cranberries and apricots. Aisles of bulk items include nuts, edamame, oats of several varieties, over a dozen kinds of granola, hot cereals, peas, beans, well over half a dozen types of rice, bulk sugar and candies. But it doesnt stop there. The bakery offers flour-free muffins, fresh baked rolls, breads and sweets. The butcher shop has fresh-cut meats and sandwich fixins while offering pre-cooked options for those on the run. Canned goods, flowers and a health and beauty section are all available under one roof. First-time shopper Martine Smith was impressed with the produce and selection at Sprouts. I only went for the produce, Smith said. It was superb. Smith added that she avoids processed foods. If it comes in a box or package or a can, I dont eat it. According to Sproutss Facebook page, weekly coupons run from Wednesday to Wednesday, so shopping mid-week is a great way to save money. Ads are available online at Sprouts Facebook page, so its easy to keep up with whats on sale.

NHS Spring Sports Update

The Tigers, just like their crosstown rival, are having a very successful spring sports season. The orange and black look to keep that rolling through post-season play as well. For the Tiger baseball team, there has been no national headline-grabbing brawl, but they are competitive this baseball season. The Tigers recently lost in the finals of the Choctaw High tournament after run-ruling their first two opponents. The Tigers lost the final to Bishop McGuinness 13-2 in the final and look to take on a very tough Edmond Memorial team as they get back into district play. The Tiger boys soccer team, after their big win over crosstown rival, Norman North, have had close games and pulled out victory in those games. Three games have been decided via shootout most recently when the Tigers beat PC North 7-0. Three games have been by one goal, and only one has been by more than one. The main result for Coach Drummond and the Tigers is that they are still undefeated and continue to roll. The story of the spring sports season so far has to be that of the Norman High Track Team and the athlete named Patrick Ahearn. In this day of sports, with stories of players smoking synthetic drugs and coaches throwing basketballs and homophobic slurs at their players, the story of Ahearn is one that should make headlines. Ahearn lost part of his leg last summer in a personal watercraft accident. Recently Ahearn ran a 400-meter race, and hundreds of athletes and coaches lined the track to cheer him on. It wasnt about Ahearns speed, but the fact he was there, finished and demonstrated the human spirit necessary to continue the fight and never give up. That is the gold medal performance of the spring. Go Patrick!

NNHS Spring Sports Update

The Timberwolves spring sports are in full swing and making their mark. Between track, baseball and soccer, the T-Wolves are having good seasons right now and are making the push toward the playoffs. For the North baseball team, this has been the craziest season to date. The Timberwolves went to Florida to play in a major national tournament and had a great showing going undefeated against some very tough competition. However, all anyone will talk about is the brawl with Jacksonvilles Arlington Country Day. The Timberwolves have bounced back and are now in district play and recently had a 2-1 finish in the Bo Bowman Tournament in Lawton, losing to the host school, Lawton High, 6-5 in the championship game. The Timberwolves hop back into district play with games against Putnam City North and South Moore looming ahead. The defending state champion boys soccer team is not going to South Carolina this year for the Palmetto Cup in South Carolina but are instead making the trip to Huntsville, Alabama and playing in the Southern Soccer Showcase. Going into Alabama sporting a 2-2 record is not how the Timberwolves wanted to show up, but after a 4-0 victory over Edmond Memorial before the trip, the Timberwolves were feeling a little better before returning to play US Grant. For the girls soccer team, Lexi Carroll is continuing her great play. Carroll tallied two goals in the upset of the number two team in 6A Edmond Memorial 2-0.The Lady Timberwolves are 4-0 and rolling this year with big victories over Norman High, Broken Arrow and Edmond Memorial. The girls have never played for the state title, but if they continue playing like this, there is a very good chance you will see the Timberwolves playing for it all at the end of the year.

A Crazy Idea
Film folks will do anything to sell seats.
Weve all seen gimmicks as advertisements before. Offer the customer something new and unique which sometimes means bizarre and hope that it draws them towards your product. Whether its a talking donkey on a commercial or the promise of a free shoeshine in the store, there are lots of new, inventive ways to try to sell products. In movies, this is often combined with the excitement of new technology or a new audience to create bizarre features in films that you never expected to see or hear, touch, smell or taste. Here are a few of the more bizarre moments in film history. Smell-o-Vision Thats right, its exactly what it sounds like. When sound first came on the scene (pun intended), a few producers thought that adding in all the senses to movies would add to the experience and the ticket sales. They synchronized the release of pre-made scents with parts of the films soundtracks. Unfortunately the noise of the smells pumping, as well as the horrible combination of odors that stayed in the theater, quickly put Smell-o-Vision in the grave. In a few instances, including a recent showing at a Japanese university and a do-ityourself scratch-and-sniff rip-off called Odorama, some people have tried to resurrect it, but so far they have been unsuccessful. Percepto! For his 1959 horror film The Tingler, director William Castle chose a few random audience seats to receive electrical shocks throughout the movie to cause panic. He also stationed fake nurses, gurneys, and staged fainters to be rushed away mid-showing. It certainly increased the horror of the film, but in the end the cost of the fright was too frightening to continue the gimmick. Signoscope The National Theater of the Deaf teamed up with Hollywood for this comedy film, the only one ever to be produced in sign language with a dubbed audio track for the hearing. Consider it open captioning. Hypnotism Werner Herzog claims to have hypnotized the entire cast of his movie Heart of Glass. Even more than that, he designed the opening of his film to hypnotize the audience, throwing them into a trance that would lead into the story of the movie. Youll have to watch and see if it works for yourself. Sensurround Sensurround is an audio technology designed to provide serious low-range bass for soundtracks. The technology was originally intended for the 1974 movie Earthquake, although it was used on a few others. Although popular, it was, unfortunately, too expensive and too dangerously realistic. The sound was so powerful that the Manns Chinese Theater lost chunks of ceiling plaster while showing Earthquake.

What do Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg and Mike Tyson have in common? Roles in this movie. The latest installment of the Scary Movie films is a usual romp through comedic horror through the lives of a young couple that discover a demon stalking them and their newborn son. Iron Man 3 May 2(9:00 pm)

TV Review - Pretty Little Liars

That group of popular girls who stuck together has reunited for the most bizarre occasion. When Alison, the ringleader, goes missing, Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily come back together to find out what happened. Anonymous messages begin to arrive from someone who knows all of their secrets and is more than happy to spread it in their gossip-loving little town of Rosewood, Pa. The show is based on a young adult novel series by Sara Shepard. It is currently in its third season and has been renewed for a fourth.

Robert Downey Jr. is back as Tony Stark, the millionaire superhero who acts out on his own power and wallet against the forces of injustice. Revenge is the theme of this third installment, as Stark chases down the enemy responsible for tearing his world apartand is forced to confront himself as he does so.

Ctrl + Alt + Date

Somewhere in this country, during an enchanted time frame, organic dating existed. It was era when men instinctually opened car doors for women and ladies knew wearing pasties to the lake wasnt a viable alternative to a swimsuit. Nonetheless, here we are: 2013. Wooing occurs via text, dirty girls rule and the nice guy is regularly skimmed over. Its a parallel universe to the Lets share a soda and hold hands at the drive-in scenario. Take, for instance, Kim Kardashian. She reported being honored Kanye West wrote the song, Perfect B*tch about her. Shes so totally honored and stuff. Welcome to dating avant-garde. Hope you brought protection. In the modern love arena, there is a game played. You must be a player in this game to get play while avoiding getting played. You must be a baller or perhaps a shot caller. Your uniform is important, and your bank account and ride speak volumes. Your date should be bad not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good. In my opinion, its daunting and twisted. For those overwhelmed, the cyber dating method isnt really a bad option. Enter stage left the star of this article. Well call it matchplentyofharmony.com. My friend A. joined a few months ago. I heart sitting down with her to check her matches. First, its important you know A. possesses beauty, intelligence, morals, success and kindness. She has simply experienced some unfortunate relationship mishaps and is finding the dating pool drained, so shes trying online coupling. Her story isnt unique. OK, back to matchplentyofharmony.com . This site is a pretty good way to meet people, and a pretty good way to pee your pants laughing. So, #realtalk. To get started, you put on your shallow hat with your fresh judgmental shirt, and you flick through pics without reading a word these people write. Raw, but true. Scanning As matches goes a little like this; swamp donkey, swamp donkey, cute, swamp donkey, decent oh my god, come look at this guy. (Pee pants.) Next, you read. Suitors create profile names to accompany their glamour shots. Some of her zingers were Rowlandontheriver, Gotmoney, Dunnowhatimdoing, Tenderheat, SpotlessCamero, BlahBlahSnore and Majorkrunk. A.s tagline reads, Can you make me laugh? One man expressed his interest by responding, I can tickle your Elmo, while another man told her, You stand out like a sparkly cubic zirconium. Finally, dates happen. Waiting for As date report is like waiting for Christmas morning. On a second date, A. was taken to a Thunder game. Mid-game her date randomly attempted to lick her brain through her ear. On a separate first date, her courter responded to everything with the word awesomeness. So, you love your job? Awesomeness. And, Youre from Houston? Awesomeness. Matchplentyofharmony.com isnt a complete freak show, though. These are just funny examples of the crooked side. A. claims if you weed through the awkward mirror pics and rambling jibba jabba, you find some choice people. Cute. Interesting. Sane. A. has dated brilliant men from matchplentyofharmony.com. Overall, I determine online dating to be a good way to meet new people. You simply mustnt invest too high of expectations. If you join, relax and calmly negotiate the rabbit warren of weirdophiles and medieval beasts to unearth a gem. I say if the game has you down, try the Internet. Stay current, and get a friend to take your picture.

Local Music

North Meets South

There are many great things about living in Norman. For one thing, we have more than our fair share of great music! Ive attended hundreds of shows in the restaurants, bars, coffee shops, parks and festivals here and heard many emerging musical artists. This early spring evening, Im headed to Tres Cantina in downtown Norman to hear one such musical act. North Meets South consists of John and Joie Johnson, who combine their talents to produce world-class music both lyrically and instrumentally! While Joie sings the words with her powerful and melodic voice, John provides interesting guitar work. The show kicks off with an original song -- Nothin but a Story. Take it from me, you can always choose/Dont let your song be the blues/Life is nothing but a story/Well you can fight it, or write it. What a great line! Countless songs, poems and stories come from experiences and feelings that the author decided it was better to write it rather than to fight it by keeping them inside. The show goes on with the duo covering The Beatles, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Adele, Stealers Wheel, Keb Mo, Sonny and Cher, The Carter Family, Johnny Cash and even Led Zeppelins Dyer Maker. The songs North Meets South cover are literally all over the map! And these arent jukebox covers -- Joies vocals, Johns guitar playing and their arrangements add something to each song they play that takes it further while still honoring the original artist. But its not all covers - about a third of the songs in this show are originals. Red sun settin on my time away/Put the pedal to the floor/Racin back to the life I left/Never loved it more/Out here on the open road, Im not alone From the North Meets South song Open Road. Ive heard people describe Joies voice as similar to Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, Adele or other such great female vocalists. But thats an over-simplification. You can hear the influence of those singers as well: Judy Garland, June Carter Cash, Emmylou Harris. But Joies voice is unique: beautifully melodic from lullaby soft and sweet to belly up to the bar while I belt out some blues powerful. And though she pays tribute to the greats, Joie doesnt sound to me like shes trying to emulate anyone else. Its her voice and it is truly world class! John plays the acoustic guitar like its a whole band -- intricate rhythms and guitar work with finger-picking, flat-picking and hybrid styles supported by walking bass lines with bass drum parts kicking in at times from the stomp box. Well-thought-out musical arrangements ebb and flow with intensity and excitement throughout the songs, perfectly in sync with Joies vocal work. Songwriting is a team effort for the couple. John may start with a guitar part and then Joie kicks in a few lyrics and melody. Back and forth, they each throw in a line or help refine a phrase. John says they both tend to be perfectionists and are very picky about what stays and what goes. He told me that they wont play a song in a show until Joie approves of the guitar part and John approves of the vocals. The end result is a high-quality song all around. Day by day, 8 a.m. to 5/Day by day, Just to survive/Day by day, Roll the dice and lose/Day by day, sing the blues/Just workin, drinkin, dyin. From North Meets Souths rockin original Workin, Drinkin, Dyin. These originals and others can be found on their website www. NorthMeetsSouth.com as well as concert dates and more info. North Meets South plays regularly around Norman at Tres Cantina and many other popular venues. They have a happy hour show every Wednesday at the Deli too. Check them out soon!
