When an electronic circuit requires constant voltage or constant current with low power or volt-amp rating, a control transformer comes into the picture. Capacitors and other filtering devices are used to reduce the variations in the output. As a result, constant voltage or current is obtained.

The transformer is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The principle states that a changing magnetic field within a coil of wire induces a voltage across the ends of the coil (electromagnetic induction). Changing the current in the primary coil changes the magnetic flux that is developed. In turn, the changing magnetic flux induces a voltage in the secondary coil. The control transformer is designed for industrial usage where electromagnetic devices such as relays and solenoids are used. These transformers maximize inrush capability and output voltage regulation when electromagnetic devices are primarily energized. These transformers include high-quality insulating materials. This insulation provides electrical protection to turn-to-turn windings, layer to layer windings, primary to secondary windings and ground. The transformers are vacuuming permeated with VT polyester resin and oven-cured. This seals the surface and eliminates moisture. Filling the entire unit provides a strong mechanical bond and offers protection from the environment. The advantage of using a control transformer is the inherent stability of the voltage supplied from a transformer and its ability to handle extreme current peaks. When the start button on a motor starter is pushed and the contactor coil energizes, there is a very brief (typically 30 to 50 milliseconds) surge in current demand known as an "inrush current". This peak can surpass 10 times the normal current flow, and transformers handle these peaks far more competently than a conventional supply. Advantages: Using a control transformer to supply control power provides a lower, safer and more efficient control circuit voltage to be used in high working voltage applications. The excellent inrush current handling characteristics of transformer supplied power also makes for a more efficient power supply. The use of lower voltages in a control circuit provides the workers using stop and start buttons in hazardous environments with safety.

For correct control transformer specification, three features of the load circuit must be determined in addition to the minimum voltage essential to operate the circuit.
