Exponents, Logarithms and Geometric Series Relations and Functions Specific Outcome 6 Demonstrate an understanding of inverses of relations. [C, CN, R, V] Notes: The notation y = f -1 ( x ) should only be used if the inverse is also a function. When discussing the equations of inverse relations, the focus should primarily be on linear or quadratic functions. When exploring inverse relations graphically, teachers may choose to explore various relations such as polynomial, piecewise, radical, exponential, and absolute value. Students should be able to restrict the domain on the original function to obtain an inverse that is also a function. Acceptable Standard perform, analyze, sketch, and describe a reflection in the line y = x , given the function or relation in graphical form determine the equation of the inverse of a linear or quadratic function and analyze its graph Standard of Excellence determine restrictions on the domain of a function in order for its inverse to be a function, given the graph or equation Sample Question - Standard of Excellence The graph of y = 3x is reflected in y = x . The equation of the transformed graph is A. y = log 3 x B. y = 3log x C. y = 3- x D. y = -3x I have mastered this outcome at the: Acceptable Standard Math 30-1 Outcomes Checklist Exponents and Logarithms Standard of Excellence

8 Demonstrate an understanding of the product, quotient, and power laws of logarithms. [C, CN, ME, R, T] [ICT: C64.1] Notes: Change of base identity can be taught as a strategy for evaluating logarithms. Acceptable Standard simplify and/or expand logarithmic expressions using the laws of logarithms solve exponential equations that: o can be simplified to a common base o cannot be simplified to a common base and the exponents are monomials solve logarithmic equations but cannot recognize when a solution is extraneous Sample Questions - Acceptable Standard Given that log 3 a = 6 and log 3 b = 5 , determine the value of log 3 9ab 2 .
