Area Coordinator for First Year Programs Division of Student Life

The University of the South is inviting applications for the position of Area Coordinator for First Year Programs. The Area Coordinator is an important member of the Student Life division, particularly in the Office of Residential Life. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Area Coordinator will have dual responsibilities of supporting educational programs for first-year students on campus while also helping to establish a respectful and collegial tone in a group of residential facilities. Primary responsibilities related to educational programming will include advising and supporting all programming and retention initiatives for first-year students. The Area Coordinator will provide leadership and vision to create, foster, and lead campus-wide initiatives that will assist new students with their transition into college. Working with faculty and residential life staff members, the Area Coordinator will plan and implement educational programs outside of the classroom to facilitate first-year student success. The Area Coordinator will also advise and work with others in the division of student life on need-based student programming (e.g. on academic success, maintaining personal balance, ethical behavior, or living within a community) as well as developing and implementing a communication plan and programs to transition students from the admissions process to matriculation. In addition, the successful candidate will work with other professional and student staff who serve in a student support capacity to promote a similar and consistent experience across campus. Primary responsibilities related to residential life include living in a residence hall within an area of 300+ residents, offering informal counseling on an individual basis and referring students to appropriate University personnel for assistance as needed, serving in an on-call capacity with other staff members in residential life, supporting the Deans of Students by helping to enforce college policies, encouraging the leadership development of the student residential life staff, reporting maintenance and facility issues in the buildings, preparing the residence halls for the opening and closing of each semester, and upholding the residential, social, and academic traditions of the University. On-campus housing and a meal plan are provided as part of the compensation package The ideal candidate will have a bachelors degree, masters preferred, with previous experience in educational programming, demonstrated leadership experience in higher education, and previous facilitation of group work. An interest in, or previous experience working with college-aged students is essential. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and organizational abilities. Knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint preferred. The University of the South is comprised of a well-regarded College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a distinguished School of Theology.
