Dear Colleague
Welcome to your new catalogue from Pearson
I hope the Pearson name wont be new to you because, in fact, youve been working with us for many
years. All our imprints Heinemann, Longman, Causeway and Payne Gallway have been part of
Pearson for some time and this year we are making the Pearson connection a little clearer. Like you,
we are completely committed to excellence in education. Youll have come across our work in the UK
through names like Edexcel and BTEC in assessment and qualifcations, and Fronter and Phoenix in learning
technology. And this year Id like to tell you a little more about Pearson and all it can do for you.
Pearson: helping people progress, everywhere
We aspire to be the worlds leading learning company by helping everyone progress in their lives
through education. We believe in every kind of learning, for all kinds of people, wherever they are in the
world. Working in over 100 languages, we have built an international reputation for raising achievement
through innovation in education. Every business in the Pearson family is connected to learning. Some are
household names, like Penguin and the Financial Times, others you may not know so well. But all of them
demonstrate our commitment to the very highest standards in learning around the world. And all of them
aspire to our vision, summed up in the words Always Learning.
Pearson: where learning comes together
We hope youll be impressed by the breadth of our capabilities and begin to see the benefts of joining
them together. Our technology already enables teachers to personalise learning for individual learners,
provides assessment data to help learners identify where they need to improve, and brings our resources
and content to students in engaging, challenging and supportive ways, in and out of the classroom. We
believe that technology will ofer huge benefts to all of us involved in learning in years to come.
Pearson: inspiring inspirers like you
We employ many people who have worked in education all their lives. We all share the same goals: to
inspire and support teachers like you; to raise educational standards; and to use data and technology
imaginatively to beneft all learners.
Pearson. Always learning
To achieve these goals, we listen to what people like you have to say. Every day we learn lessons big and
small. Always Learning is not just what we believe, its what we do.

Deans story
My name is Dean Hunter. Im 24 and have been working as
an Administrative Assistant for Excelsior Merchandise for 18
months. During that time, the company has grown
signifcantly and we have taken on a large number of new
feld sales staf. I am the central contact point for them,
being ofce based, and it is my job to keep a track on their
appointments during the working day and to process the
orders which they send in from customers.
All of this tracking and order processing is carried out manually using a
paper-based system. This worked fne when we only had 4 sales reps.
However, we now have a sales force of 20, and keeping abreast of all the
paperwork which is generated in any one day is becoming almost impossible,
with the result that problems are beginning to arise with missed appointments,
lost order sheets, and ultimately lost business for the company.
Office life
There are advantages and disadvantages to both paper and electronic diary
systems. However, when there are a large number of staf to administrate,
and a large volume of paperwork being generated, it is ofen better to use an
electronic diary system. First, for the management of the sales reps
appointments, an electronic calendar system will be much easier to
administrate than a paper version; second, for the processing of orders, using
an electronic system will allow for a much more streamlined process and will
eliminate the possibility of lost orders as a result of missing paperwork.

Ask the expert
Q
I have to look afer the diary management for a large number of sales
reps. I also have to process the orders which they send in. I am
overloaded with the paperwork which this generates and am starting to
worry, as orders are being lost due to missing paperwork.
A
In such a situation, it is recommended that you move over to an
electronic system. This will ofer a much easier way for you to ensure
accuracy in administration. Microsof Outlook allows you to run a
calendar service and it allows you to share calendars, so you can keep
on top of the sales reps schedules. Also, by equipping your sales team
with laptops, they could then email in all orders for customers, which
you can then process electronically.

Gravity, suction and pressure feed spray guns
Spray guns are designed to atomise fuids at the tip of the nozzle
to make application easier. Gravity feed and suction feed spray
guns have two passageways fxed at the nozzle, one for the fuid
and one for the air. Atomisation is achieved by a vacuum formed
by the rush of air moving past the fuid passage while drawing
fuid into the air stream. At this point of contact the fuid is mixed
with air and a spray mist leaves the nozzle under pressure.
Gravity feed
A gravity feed gun has a container fxed to the top of the gun. The
coating is fed into the gun by the coating pressing down towards
the nozzle of the gun. Because the coating is gravity fed, less
air pressure is required to atomise the coating. This creates less
overspray and therefore less waste. Gravity feed guns are therefore
ideal for details and spot repairs.
Suction feed
A suction feed gun has a container fxed to the bottom of the gun
and draws the fuid to the gun by suction. This requires more air
pressure than the gravity feed system in order to create a strong
enough vacuum to pull the coating up the feeding tube from the
container. It creates more overspray. It is possible to atomise at a
lower air pressure by pressurising the cup, forcing the fuid up the
feed tube. The cup can be pressurised by an air tube extending
from the air supply to the cup.
Pressure feed
A pressure feed gun operates by positive pressure. This means the
air is fed to the container causing a pressure vacuum. This system
sends the fuid and air directly to the gun. The coating container is
usually kept some distance from the spray gun to aid application.
It requires long lengths of air and fuid lines. It is normally
used for large areas where a faster application is required and for
heavier coatings.
Types of spray gun
Air spray (conventionaI)
Paint is applied to the part by pneumatic fuid atomisation
at higher air pressures. Air spray guns come in a variety of
confgurations: siphon feed, gravity feed, and pressure feed. This
type of spray gun is most commonly used for industrial fnishing.
l Advantages complete pattern control. Finest atomisation.
Good for high production rate applications.
Suction feed guns are better
suited when changing
colours regularly and when
small tasks are required,
such as touch ups.
Remember
The containers are much
larger to hold the coating,
which also saves time from
flling the fuid containers
from suction and gravity
feed guns.

Tilting the spray gun causes similar faults to arcing excessive
overspray and an uneven or patchy fnish.
Always hold the gun perpendicular to the surface, that is, square
to the surface. The correct spraying speed allows a full wet coat of
paint or coating to be applied to the surface without any defects.
You should move the gun in a confdent, fowing fashion, without
hesitation.
Figure 23.21 Incorrect (a) and correct (b) ways to hold the gun
AppIication techniques for obstacIes
When carrying out spray painting jobs you may come across
obstacles such as pipe work and other obstructions, such as fxed
machinery, which cannot be removed. You will also need to spray
surfaces with internal and external corners.
To make sure that the surfaces are coated correctly you may need
to use paint brushes to help with the application, because of the
awkwardness of these surfaces and to prevent overcoating. This is
known as strip coating, where internal corners and around pipe
work, beams and machinery is painted in with a brush to avoid
a build up of paint which could lead to runs and sagging. Some
external corners may also need strip coating.
(a) (b)
Junaid is working on a new build site. He is a frst-year apprentice and is
proving to be a very quick learner. Junaids boss comes and tells him that,
when he has fnished what he is doing, Junaid is to go and get a paint
sprayer and start a new job using this piece of equipment. Junaid tells his
boss that he has never used a paint sprayer before. Junaids boss says that the
instructions are in the box and Junaid should be able to work it out.
What do you think Junaid should do? Do you think Junaids boss is right to
ask him to carry out this task?

Construction Technology
48 Construction Technology Subsoil drainage 49
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 require that a
construction site must be safe. In order to protect the public on footpaths and
roadways a fan hoarding is often used. This fan hoarding is usually constructed
in scaffolding and directs any falling debris back towards the building or
scaffold (see Fig. 2.2.5). It is fully boarded and often lined.

The presence of groundwater on a potential construction site and its level in relation
to the foundations is often a critical factor in the design and construction of the
substructure, in terms of both cost and how this will be achieved technologically.
BUILDING REGULATION APPROVED DOCUMENT C:
RESISTANCE TO MOISTURE AND GROUNDWATER
This section of the Building Regulations covers the resistance of the construction to
moisture. It requires that subsoil drainage shall be provided if it is needed to avoid:
the passage of ground moisture to the interior of the building;
damage to the fabric of the building.
Fig. 2.3.1 illustrates a site that will not require any treatment, as the
water table is well below the formation level of the foundations,

Dementia awareness Unit DEM 201
187
186
Dementia Awareness
This chapter is about developing your awareness of dementia; what it is and
how it affects people. It is easy to think that everyone who has dementia is
older and that nothing can be done about it. Neither of these ideas is true
age is not the only factor that infuences dementia and there are many ways
of reducing the effects of dementia and supporting people to manage the
experience in a positive way.
This chapter provides an introduction and will touch on some areas that are
covered in more detail in later chapters.
When you have achieved this unit you will:
Understand what dementia is
Understand the key features of the theoretical models of dementia
Know the most common types of dementia and their causes
Understand factors relating to an individuals experience of dementia
UNIT DEM 201
the person you are supporting is not caused pain, distress or
humiliation. Groups representing people with disabilities have pointed
out that blanket policies excluding any lifing may infringe the human
rights of someone needing mobility assistance. For example, people
may in efect be confned to bed unnecessarily and against their will
by a lack of lifing assistance. A High Court judgement (A & B versus
East Sussex County Council, 2003) found in favour of two women
with disabilities who had been denied access to lifing because the
local authority had a blanket ban on lifing, regardless of
circumstances. Such a ban was deemed unlawful under the Disability
Discrimination Act 1995. It is likely that similar cases will be brought
under the Human Rights Act 1998, which gives people protection
against humiliating or degrading treatment.
Doing it well
Knowing the causes of dementia
Decisions about the best way to move someone must be taken
jointly with the person concerned wherever possible.
Encourage and support people to do as much as possible for
themselves; only provide the minimum manual handling required.
Make maximum use of aids to support people to move themselves.
Your employer has a statutory duty to provide lifting and handling
equipment, but it is your responsibility to use the equipment that is
provided.
You have a right to work safely, but people have rights to be moved
with dignity and as safely as possible.
Case study
Jo is a new care assistant at a day centre for adults with
disabilities. She was trained to use a hoist as part of a
moving and handling course in her previous job.
Although there is a mobile hoist at the day centre, Jo
has noticed that none of the staff use it. On several
occasions she has seen people being manually lifted
from their wheelchairs by the staff, working in pairs.
One morning Liz, a regular user of the centre, asked Jo
to accompany her to the toilet. Jo knew that Liz would
need to be helped from her chair on to the toilet, so she
went to get the hoist. As she passed the other staff one
of them said, Oh, you dont want to bother with that
thing. Liz isnt very heavy its much easier just to lift
her yourself. Anyway, I dont think the hoist works any
more.
1. What should Jo do next?
2. If the hoist does not work, what should Jo do?
3. What could be the consequences of lifting
incorrectly to the staff and to Liz?
4. What training and safety procedures would you
recommend for this day centre?
Is this Dementia?
Refect
Are you confdent that your own
moving and handling skills are up to
date? If not, what steps are you
taking to improve them?
Using the right equipment reduces the risk
of harm for everyone.
